THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
(PBUH)
Flexibility in recording narration..,
As they saw this as history that does not affect
ahkam or rulings even Imam Ahmed Bin Hambal
accepted this tradition

Ibn Sad,Ibn Hisham etc..,

[FIQH-US-SEERAH]
THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
(PBUH)
Recently scholars began to apply a new trend :
Applying the rules of hadith to recording of seerah,…why?,
Becoz in the lifetime of Imam Ahmed the khilafa was
already established, so only for general lesson
purposes they used to approach seerah,..
But now we need rules for dawah and Islamic
jurispuridence in a new atmosphere so scholars
would go to books like sahih bukhari, Muslim,
Abidawood etc….

1. LOCATION OF THE ARABS:
•Thanks to its geographical
position, the peninsula has always
maintained great importance..
•Considering its internal setting, it
is mostly deserts and sandy places,
which has rendered it inaccessible
•to foreigners and invaders, and
allowed its people complete liberty
and independence through the
ages,
•despite the presence of two
neighboring great empires.
RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM
LOCATION OF THE ARABS:
•Its external setting, on the
other hand, caused it to be the
centre of the old world and
provided it with sea and land
links with most nations at the
time.
• Thanks to this strategic
position the Arabian Peninsula
had become the centre for
trade, culture, religion and art.

Ancient Arabs, of
whose history
little is known….

PURE ARABS:
Who originated from the
progeny of Ya‘rub bin
Yashjub bin Qahtan. They
were also called Qahtanian
Arabs.
ARABIZED ARABS:
Who originated from the
progeny of Ishmael. They
were also called ‘Adnanian
Arabs.
The pure Arabs – the people
of Qahtan – originally lived
in Yemen and comprised
many tribes, two of which
were very famous:
1. Himyar: The most famous of whose septs were Zaid Al-Jamhur,
Quda‘a and Sakasic.
2 . Kahlan: The most famous of whose septs were Hamdan, Anmar,
Tai’, Mudhhij, Kinda, Lakhm, Judham, Azd, Aws, Khazraj and the
descendants of Jafna — the kings of old Syria.

PURE ARABS:
ARABIZED ARABS:
Kahlan septs emigrated from Yemen to dwell in
the different parts of the Arabian Peninsula
prior to the Great Flood (Sail Al-‘Arim of Ma’rib
Dam), due to the failure of trade under the
Roman pressure and domain on both sea and
land trade routes following Roman occupation
of Egypt and Syria.
Naturally enough, the competition between
Kahlan and Himyar led to the evacuation of the
first and the settlement of the second in
Yemen.

ARABIZED ARABS:
THE EMIGRATING SEPTS OF KAHLAN CAN BE INTO FOUR GROUPS:
Azd: Who, under the leadership of ‘Imran bin ‘Amr Muzaiqbâ’, wandered in
Yemen, sent pioneers and finally headed northwards.
Lakhm and Judham:
Of whom was Nasr bin Rabi‘a, father of Manadhira, Kings of Heerah.
Banu Tai’:
Who also emigrated northwards to settle by the so- called Aja and Salma
Mountains which were consequently named as Tai’ Mountains.
Kinda:
Who dwelt in Bahrain but were expelled to Hadramout and Najd where they
instituted a powerful government but not for long , for the whole tribe soon
faded away.
Another tribe of Himyar, known as Quda‘a, also left Yemen and dwelt in Samawa
semi-desert on the borders of Iraq.

It is mentioned in the Genesis that Ishmael was
thirteen years older than his brother Ishaq.
The sequence of the story of the sacrifice of
Ishmael shows that it really happened before
Ishaq’s birth, and that Allâh’s Promise to give
Abraham another son, Ishaq, came after narration
of the whole story.

RULERSHIP IN HIJAZ
•The rulers of Hijaz, were greatly esteemed and respected by the Arabs,
• and were considered as rulers and servants of the religious centre.
•It was a mixture of secular and official precedence as well as religious
leadership.
•They ruled among the Arabs in the name of religious leadership and
always monopolized the custodianship of the Holy Sanctuary and its
neighborhood.
•They looked after the interests of Al-Ka‘bah visitors and were in charge
of putting Abraham’s code into effect.
•They even had such offices and departments like those of the
parliaments of today.
• However, they were too weak to carry the heavy burden, as this
evidently came to light during the Abyssinian (Ethiopian) invasion.

ASPECT OF PRE-ISLAMIC
ARABIAN SOCIETY
SOCIAL LIFE OF THE ARABS:
The status of the woman among the nobility
recorded an advanced degree of esteem.
In fact, she was the most decisive key to bloody fight or
friendly peace
The marriage contract rested completely in the hands of the woman’s
legal guardian whose words with regard to her marital status could
never be questioned
STATUS OF THE WOMAN
RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM
‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased
with her) reported four kinds
of marriage in pre-Islamic
Arabia:
1. Similar to present-day marriage procedures,
2. Husband would send his wife – after the menstruation period – to
cohabit with another man in order to conceive.
3. A group of less than ten men would have sexual intercourse with a
woman.
4. A lot of men would have sexual intercourse with a certain woman .
If this woman got pregnant and gave birth to a child, she would
collect those men, and a seeress would tell whose child it was.
RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM
1. Women always accompanied men in their wars.
2. The winners would freely have sexual intercourse
with such women, but disgrace would follow the
children conceived in this way all their lives.
3. Pre-Islam Arabs had no limited number of wives.
4. Divorce was to a very great extent in the power of
the husband.
RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM
Bedouin’s deep-seated emotional
attachment to his clan, Family, or
perhaps tribal-pride,
Their undisputed motto was: “ ‫مظلوما‬ ‫أو‬ ‫ظالما‬ ‫أخاك‬ ‫انصر‬—
Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or
oppressed” in its literal meaning;
they disregarded the Islamic amendment which states
that supporting an oppressor brother implies
deterring him from transgression
RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM
Avarice for leadership, and
keen sense of emulation often
resulted in bitter tribal
warfare!!
Inter-tribal relationships were fragile and weak due to continual inter-
tribal wars of attrition. Deep devotion to religious superstitions and
some customs held in veneration!!
A time-honoured custom of suspending hostilities during the
prohibited months (Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qa‘dah, and Dhul-
Hijjah) functioned favourably and provided an opportunity for
them to earn their living and coexist in peace.
RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM
1. The woman was a marketable commodity and
regarded as a piece of inanimate property.
2. Inter-tribal relationships were fragile.
3. Avarice for wealth and involvement in futile wars
were the main objectives that governed their
chiefs’ self-centred policies.
We may sum up the social situation in Arabia by saying that the Arabs of
the pre-Islamic period were groping about in the dark and ignorance,
entangled in a mesh of superstitions paralyzing their mind and driving
them to lead an animal-like life.
SUM UP
RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM
THE ECONOMIC SITUATION:
THE ECONOMIC SITUATION RAN IN LINE WITH
THE SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE
THE TRADE JOURNEYS COULD NOT BE FULFILLED UNLESS SECURITY OF CARAVAN ROUTES AND
INTER-TRIBAL PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE WERE PROVIDED – TWO IMPERATIVE EXIGENCIES
UNFORTUNATELY LACKING IN ARABIA EXCEPT DURING THE PROHIBITED MONTHS WITHIN
WHICH THE ARABS HELD THEIR ASSEMBLIES OF ‘UKAZ, DHIL-MAJAZ, MIJANNAH AND OTHERS.
INDUSTRY WAS ALIEN TO THE ARABIAN PSYCHOLOGY.
ON THE WHOLE, POVERTY, HUNGER AND INSUFFICIENT CLOTHING WERE THE PREVAILING
FEATURES IN ARABIA, ECONOMICALLY.

MUHAMMAD'S PBUH BIRTH AND FORTY
YEARS PRIOR TO PROPHETHOOD
HIS BIRTH:
Muhammad (Peace be upon him), the Master of Prophets, was born
in Bani Hashim lane in Makkah on Monday morning, the ninth of
Rabi‘ Al-Awwal, the same year of the Elephant Event,
and forty years of the reign of Kisra (Khosru Nushirwan), i.e. the
twentieth or twenty-second of April, 571 CE., according
to the scholar Muhammad Sulaimân Al-Mansourpuri, and the
astrologer Mahmûd Pasha.
It was but controversially reported that significant precursors accompanied his birth:
fourteen galleries of Kisra’s palace cracked and rolled down, the Magians’ sacred fire
died down and some churches on
Lake Sawa sank down and collapsed.

Gabriel came down and ripped his chest open and took out
the heart. He then extracted a blood-clot out of it and said:
“That was the part of Satan in thee.” And then he washed it
with the water of Zamzam in a gold basin. After that the
heart was joined together and restored to its place.

RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM
Ibn ‘Asakir reported on the authority of Jalhamah bin ‘Arfuta
who said:
“I came to Makkah when it was a rainless year, so Quraish
said ‘O Abu Talib, the valley has become leafless and the
children hungry, let us go and pray for rain-fall.’ Abu Talib
went to Al-Ka‘bah with a young boy who was as beautiful as
the sun, and a black cloud was over his head.
Abu Talib and the boy stood by the wall of Al-Ka‘bah and
prayed for rain.
Immediately clouds from all directions gathered and rain fell
heavily and caused the flow of springs and growth of plants
in the town and the country.

REBUILDING AL-KA'BAH AND THE
ARBITRATION ISSUE
When the Messenger of Allâh
(Peace be upon him) was 35.
1. Low building of white stones no more than
6.30 metres high.
2. It was also roofless and that gave the thieves
easy access to its treasures inside.
3. It was also exposed to the wearing factors of
nature — because it was built a long time ago
— that weakened and cracked its walls.
4. Five years before Prophethood, there was a
great flood in Makkah that swept towards Al-
Ka‘bah and almost demolished it.
Al-Waleed bin Al-Mugheerah Al-Mukhzumi
started the work!!

1 aspects of pre-islamic arabian society- Raheek Al Makhtum

  • 2. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM ِّ‫ر‬ْ‫د‬َ‫ص‬ ‫ي‬ِّ‫ل‬ ْ‫ح‬ َ‫ر‬ْ‫ش‬‫ا‬ ِّ‫ب‬ َ‫ر‬‫ي‬ِّ‫ل‬ ْ‫ر‬ِّ‫س‬َ‫ي‬ َ‫و‬ ‫ي‬ ِّ‫م‬ ً‫ة‬َ‫د‬ْ‫ق‬ُ‫ع‬ ْ‫ل‬ُ‫ل‬ْ‫اح‬ َ‫و‬ ‫ي‬ ِّ‫ر‬ْ‫م‬َ‫أ‬‫ي‬ِّ‫ن‬‫ا‬َ‫س‬ِّ‫ل‬ ‫ن‬ ‫ي‬ِّ‫ل‬ ْ‫و‬َ‫ق‬ ‫وا‬ُ‫ه‬َ‫ق‬ْ‫ف‬َ‫ي‬[25-28:‫طه‬] O my Lord! expand me my breast; Ease my task for me; And remove the impediment from my speech, So they may understand what I say [20:25-28]
  • 3. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM [FIQH-US-SEERAH] THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH) Flexibility in recording narration.., As they saw this as history that does not affect ahkam or rulings even Imam Ahmed Bin Hambal accepted this tradition Common narrators, Ibn Ishaq,Al Makrezi, Ibn Sad,Ibn Hisham etc..,
  • 4. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM [FIQH-US-SEERAH] THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH) Recently scholars began to apply a new trend : Applying the rules of hadith to recording of seerah,…why?, Becoz in the lifetime of Imam Ahmed the khilafa was already established, so only for general lesson purposes they used to approach seerah,.. But now we need rules for dawah and Islamic jurispuridence in a new atmosphere so scholars would go to books like sahih bukhari, Muslim, Abidawood etc….
  • 5. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM 1. LOCATION OF THE ARABS: •Thanks to its geographical position, the peninsula has always maintained great importance.. •Considering its internal setting, it is mostly deserts and sandy places, which has rendered it inaccessible •to foreigners and invaders, and allowed its people complete liberty and independence through the ages, •despite the presence of two neighboring great empires.
  • 6. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM LOCATION OF THE ARABS: •Its external setting, on the other hand, caused it to be the centre of the old world and provided it with sea and land links with most nations at the time. • Thanks to this strategic position the Arabian Peninsula had become the centre for trade, culture, religion and art.
  • 7. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM 2. ARAB TRIBES:
  • 8. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM ARAB TRIBES: Perishing Arabs: Ancient Arabs, of whose history little is known…. •Ad •Thamûd •Tasam •Jadis •Emlaq •and others. PURE ARABS: Who originated from the progeny of Ya‘rub bin Yashjub bin Qahtan. They were also called Qahtanian Arabs. ARABIZED ARABS: Who originated from the progeny of Ishmael. They were also called ‘Adnanian Arabs. The pure Arabs – the people of Qahtan – originally lived in Yemen and comprised many tribes, two of which were very famous: 1. Himyar: The most famous of whose septs were Zaid Al-Jamhur, Quda‘a and Sakasic. 2 . Kahlan: The most famous of whose septs were Hamdan, Anmar, Tai’, Mudhhij, Kinda, Lakhm, Judham, Azd, Aws, Khazraj and the descendants of Jafna — the kings of old Syria.
  • 9. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM ARAB TRIBES: Perishing Arabs: PURE ARABS: ARABIZED ARABS: Kahlan septs emigrated from Yemen to dwell in the different parts of the Arabian Peninsula prior to the Great Flood (Sail Al-‘Arim of Ma’rib Dam), due to the failure of trade under the Roman pressure and domain on both sea and land trade routes following Roman occupation of Egypt and Syria. Naturally enough, the competition between Kahlan and Himyar led to the evacuation of the first and the settlement of the second in Yemen.
  • 10. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM ARAB TRIBES: Perishing Arabs: PURE ARABS: ARABIZED ARABS: THE EMIGRATING SEPTS OF KAHLAN CAN BE INTO FOUR GROUPS: Azd: Who, under the leadership of ‘Imran bin ‘Amr Muzaiqbâ’, wandered in Yemen, sent pioneers and finally headed northwards. Lakhm and Judham: Of whom was Nasr bin Rabi‘a, father of Manadhira, Kings of Heerah. Banu Tai’: Who also emigrated northwards to settle by the so- called Aja and Salma Mountains which were consequently named as Tai’ Mountains. Kinda: Who dwelt in Bahrain but were expelled to Hadramout and Najd where they instituted a powerful government but not for long , for the whole tribe soon faded away. Another tribe of Himyar, known as Quda‘a, also left Yemen and dwelt in Samawa semi-desert on the borders of Iraq.
  • 12. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM ARAB TRIBES: Perishing Arabs: PURE ARABS: ISHMAEL ( PBUH)JURHUM THE SECOND ARABIZED ARABS: •The story of Abraham …… •HAGAR ( RA) It is mentioned in the Genesis that Ishmael was thirteen years older than his brother Ishaq. The sequence of the story of the sacrifice of Ishmael shows that it really happened before Ishaq’s birth, and that Allâh’s Promise to give Abraham another son, Ishaq, came after narration of the whole story.
  • 13. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM ARAB TRIBES: Perishing Arabs: PURE ARABS: ARABIZED ARABS: •The story of Abraham …… •HAGAR ( RA)•SARAH ( FIRST WIFE ) RA ISHMAEL ( PBUH) ZAM ZAM YEMENI TRIBE JURHUM THE SECOND ISHAC ( PBUH)

  • 35. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM RULERSHIP IN HIJAZ •The rulers of Hijaz, were greatly esteemed and respected by the Arabs, • and were considered as rulers and servants of the religious centre. •It was a mixture of secular and official precedence as well as religious leadership. •They ruled among the Arabs in the name of religious leadership and always monopolized the custodianship of the Holy Sanctuary and its neighborhood. •They looked after the interests of Al-Ka‘bah visitors and were in charge of putting Abraham’s code into effect. •They even had such offices and departments like those of the parliaments of today. • However, they were too weak to carry the heavy burden, as this evidently came to light during the Abyssinian (Ethiopian) invasion.

  • 40. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM ASPECT OF PRE-ISLAMIC ARABIAN SOCIETY SOCIAL LIFE OF THE ARABS: The status of the woman among the nobility recorded an advanced degree of esteem. In fact, she was the most decisive key to bloody fight or friendly peace The marriage contract rested completely in the hands of the woman’s legal guardian whose words with regard to her marital status could never be questioned STATUS OF THE WOMAN
  • 41. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM ‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported four kinds of marriage in pre-Islamic Arabia: 1. Similar to present-day marriage procedures, 2. Husband would send his wife – after the menstruation period – to cohabit with another man in order to conceive. 3. A group of less than ten men would have sexual intercourse with a woman. 4. A lot of men would have sexual intercourse with a certain woman . If this woman got pregnant and gave birth to a child, she would collect those men, and a seeress would tell whose child it was.
  • 42. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM 1. Women always accompanied men in their wars. 2. The winners would freely have sexual intercourse with such women, but disgrace would follow the children conceived in this way all their lives. 3. Pre-Islam Arabs had no limited number of wives. 4. Divorce was to a very great extent in the power of the husband.
  • 43. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM Bedouin’s deep-seated emotional attachment to his clan, Family, or perhaps tribal-pride, Their undisputed motto was: “ ‫مظلوما‬ ‫أو‬ ‫ظالما‬ ‫أخاك‬ ‫انصر‬— Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or oppressed” in its literal meaning; they disregarded the Islamic amendment which states that supporting an oppressor brother implies deterring him from transgression
  • 44. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM Avarice for leadership, and keen sense of emulation often resulted in bitter tribal warfare!! Inter-tribal relationships were fragile and weak due to continual inter- tribal wars of attrition. Deep devotion to religious superstitions and some customs held in veneration!! A time-honoured custom of suspending hostilities during the prohibited months (Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qa‘dah, and Dhul- Hijjah) functioned favourably and provided an opportunity for them to earn their living and coexist in peace.
  • 45. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM 1. The woman was a marketable commodity and regarded as a piece of inanimate property. 2. Inter-tribal relationships were fragile. 3. Avarice for wealth and involvement in futile wars were the main objectives that governed their chiefs’ self-centred policies. We may sum up the social situation in Arabia by saying that the Arabs of the pre-Islamic period were groping about in the dark and ignorance, entangled in a mesh of superstitions paralyzing their mind and driving them to lead an animal-like life. • 46. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM THE ECONOMIC SITUATION: THE ECONOMIC SITUATION RAN IN LINE WITH THE SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE THE TRADE JOURNEYS COULD NOT BE FULFILLED UNLESS SECURITY OF CARAVAN ROUTES AND INTER-TRIBAL PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE WERE PROVIDED – TWO IMPERATIVE EXIGENCIES UNFORTUNATELY LACKING IN ARABIA EXCEPT DURING THE PROHIBITED MONTHS WITHIN WHICH THE ARABS HELD THEIR ASSEMBLIES OF ‘UKAZ, DHIL-MAJAZ, MIJANNAH AND OTHERS. INDUSTRY WAS ALIEN TO THE ARABIAN PSYCHOLOGY. ON THE WHOLE, POVERTY, HUNGER AND INSUFFICIENT CLOTHING WERE THE PREVAILING FEATURES IN ARABIA, ECONOMICALLY.

  • 48. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM MUHAMMAD'S PBUH BIRTH AND FORTY YEARS PRIOR TO PROPHETHOOD HIS BIRTH: Muhammad (Peace be upon him), the Master of Prophets, was born in Bani Hashim lane in Makkah on Monday morning, the ninth of Rabi‘ Al-Awwal, the same year of the Elephant Event, and forty years of the reign of Kisra (Khosru Nushirwan), i.e. the twentieth or twenty-second of April, 571 CE., according to the scholar Muhammad Sulaimân Al-Mansourpuri, and the astrologer Mahmûd Pasha. It was but controversially reported that significant precursors accompanied his birth: fourteen galleries of Kisra’s palace cracked and rolled down, the Magians’ sacred fire died down and some churches on Lake Sawa sank down and collapsed.

Her husband was Al-Harith bin ‘Abdul ‘Uzza called Abi Kabshah IBN ISHAQ ANAS IN SAHIH MUSLIM Gabriel came down and ripped his chest open and took out the heart. He then extracted a blood-clot out of it and said: “That was the part of Satan in thee.” And then he washed it with the water of Zamzam in a gold basin. After that the heart was joined together and restored to its place.

  • 51. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM Ibn ‘Asakir reported on the authority of Jalhamah bin ‘Arfuta who said: “I came to Makkah when it was a rainless year, so Quraish said ‘O Abu Talib, the valley has become leafless and the children hungry, let us go and pray for rain-fall.’ Abu Talib went to Al-Ka‘bah with a young boy who was as beautiful as the sun, and a black cloud was over his head. Abu Talib and the boy stood by the wall of Al-Ka‘bah and prayed for rain. Immediately clouds from all directions gathered and rain fell heavily and caused the flow of springs and growth of plants in the town and the country. • 55. RAHEEQ AL MAKHTUM REBUILDING AL-KA'BAH AND THE ARBITRATION ISSUE When the Messenger of Allâh (Peace be upon him) was 35. 1. Low building of white stones no more than 6.30 metres high. 2. It was also roofless and that gave the thieves easy access to its treasures inside. 3. It was also exposed to the wearing factors of nature — because it was built a long time ago — that weakened and cracked its walls. 4. Five years before Prophethood, there was a great flood in Makkah that swept towards Al- Ka‘bah and almost demolished it. Al-Waleed bin Al-Mugheerah Al-Mukhzumi started the work!!
