Memorial Day
began as Decoration
Day, honoring the
Civil War dead by dec-
orating their graves.
Today Memorial Day
is celebrated at
Arlington National
Cemetery with a cere-
mony in which the
president or vice presi-
dent speaks and flags
are placed on the
graves of soldiers.
During this ceremony
a wreath is laid on the
Tomb of the Unknown
S o l d i e r .
Rome will hold
a special ceremony at
Myrtle Hill Cemetery
where the Tomb of the
Known Soldier
resides. On May 26th,
the Sunday before
Memorial Day, there is
a dedication and rib-
bon cutting ceremony
for the completion of
the final phase of
restoration of the
Known Soldiers Grave
and Veterans Plaza.
Charles Graves
of Rome was an eight-
een-year old Private
sent to France in World
War I. He was killed
in the Hindenburg line
in 1918 and was buried
in France. At the end
of the war in 1922, as
the last of the troop-
ships were arriving in
Brooklyn harbor, it
was decided that a
known soldier would

Christian Times news-
paper in California.
They own rights to the
name and "The" doesn't
make enough difference
to justify our using it.
How do they
own it? They registered
it with the National
Trademark Association.
Being new in the busi-
ness world, we never
knew enough to check
for this. Nevertheless,
our name must change,
or we risk lawsuit.
"Branches" will
be our new name, and
we will change it imme-
diately. Nothing else
about our paper will
change except the fact
that we are growing
each month and adding
new features.
Branches will
still cover local stories
direct from the branches
of local churches. Jesus
said, "I am the vine and
you are the branches."
