INTRODUCTION

“Sabse Kam Daam, Har Din"

Bharti Retail grows to 59 Easy Day stores
In its first phase of operations, Bharti Retail has opened 59 Easy Day stores in Punjab,
Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi. In addition, it also has launched three
compact hyper stores called Easy Day Market in Punjab.

The company has deliberately focused on north India in its first phase of operations in an
effort to consolidate presence in one market, before expanding to another region. The Easy
Day stores source fresh fruits and vegetables from Bharti-Walmart.

In an interesting HR innovation the stores plan to tap workforce from the likes of cart
vendors, housewives and retired personnel, by offering flexi-hour work schedules. Such
groups of persons will also be enrolled for structured training modules at the Bharti Retail
Academy.
'We want to be able to provide customers from all segments of society, in all parts of the
country, with a viable, smart shopping option.

Easyday India is the retail chain operated by Bharti Retail a subsidiary of Bharti Enterprises.
It opened its first retail outlet in the city of Ludhiana in 2008. [1] The first Easyday store in
South India was opened at Mysore.[2]
Easyday is franchisee model between Bharti Group and Wal-Mart. Rajan Bharti Mittal is
heading the operations in India. Have a Huge store chain in India, both supermarkets &
Hypermarkets.

Bharti Retail, a subsidiary of Sunil Mittal-promoted Bharti Enterprises, on Wednesday
launched its operations by opening first store in Ludhiana, Punjab.

                                                                                           Page | 6
The stores, known as 'Easy Day', would be a one-stop shop to cater to every family's day-to-
day needs, company officials said, adding that "it will bring together a relevant and wide
product range, good quality products and great-in-experience and service-all under one
roof".

The store would sell personal care products, stationary, household articles, hosiery items,
daily-need groceries like staples, processed foods, bakery and diary products, meat and
poultry, and fresh produce.

The company had earlier announced an investment of up to 2.5 billion dollars (Rs 10,000
crore) by 2015 in retail operations including multi-format retail outlets across all cities in
India that have population of over one million.

Announcing the road map for its retail ventures in 2007, Rajan Mittal, Joint Managing
Director of Bharti Enterprises, had said that Bharti was looking at approximately 10 million
square feet of retail experience throughout the country and employing about 60,000 people.

Wednesday's launch is exclusive from Bharti's proposed joint venture with US retailer
WalMart for the back-end operations.Bharti-WalMart joint venture is likely to kick off its
cash and carry (wholesale) business in the third quarter of 2008.Under this, the two would
sell products only to other retailers and not directly to the consumers, as this is not allowed
under the existing guidelines.

In its Ludhiana store, Bharti has employed people from the local communities and
employees at the outlet have been provided intensive and structured training by Bharti
Academy of Retail, which has been set up by Bharti Retail.

About easyday and easyday Market
easyday and easyday Market stores are owned and operated by Bharti Retail, a
wholly owned subsidiary of Bharti Enterprises, one of India’s leading business
groups. The company has launched more than 122 ‘easyday’ neighborhood
stores in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttara khand, Madhya
Pradesh, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir, and 11 compact hypermarkets called
‘easyday Market’ in Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, National
Capital Region and Karnataka. easyday and easyday Markets stores promise
"Sabse Kam Daam, Har Din" and offer an extensive product mix at everyday
low prices (EDLP) which are relatively lower by at least 3 -5% on a 'monthly
basket of products' vis-a-vis similar stores.

SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT MODEL

This model displays various phase that a system has to face during its development

Those phases are:

    ANALYSIS PHASE

    DESIGN PHASE

    CODING PHASE

    TESTING PHASE

    IMPLEMENTATION PHASE

    MAINTENANCE PHASE

                                                                                     Page | 11
SYSTEM ANALYSIS

System analysis is a management technique, which helps us in designing a new system or
improving an existing system. System analysis refers to the process of examining a business
situation with the intent of improving it through better procedure and methods. Before the
planning can be done, we must thoroughly understand the existing system and determine
how computers can best be used to make its operation more effective.

System analysis is the process of gathering and interpreting facts, diagnosing problems and
using the information to recommend improvement to the system.
“Analysis specifies what the system should do.”

System analysis is a software engineering task that bridges the gap between system level
requirements engineering and software design. Requirement engineering activities result in
the specification of Software’s operational characteristic (function, data, behavior), indicate
software’s interface with their system elements, and establish constraints that software must
meet.
Requirement analysis allows the software engineer to refine the software allocation and
build models of data, functional, and behavioral domains that will be treated by software.

IDENTIFICATION OF NEED

As this is a very well known fact that this era of information technology and the world
around us is full of competition. Today, when computerization is essential in each and every
aspect of human life to keep pace with the technological changes in the world, the process

                                                                                        Page | 12
and activities carried out in various business and commercial organizations also need to be
refined and automate.

Till now each and every process and different activities of the Cafeteria are carried out
manually or managed manually which need to keep records, which cause many errors and
bundles of paper work. This process may result in wastage of lot of time and money,
manpower and also it may not result accurately.

So a system was needed to overcome the problems of:

            Maintain daily product purchase detail.
            Maintain customer detail.
            Maintain stock detail
            Manually Calculation of Bill.

Due to all these above-mentioned and many other reasons this project EASYDAY RETAIL
MANAGMENT is developed. This project aims to maintain daily product detail along with
the stock detail and the customer detai

FEASIBILITY STUDY

Depending on the results of the initial investigation the survey is now expanded to a more
detailed feasibility study. “FEASIBILITY STUDY” is a test of system proposal according
to its workability, impact of the organization, ability to meet needs and effective use of the
resources. It focuses on these major questions:

What are the user’s demonstrable needs and how does a candidate system meet them?

What resources are available for given candidate system?

What are the likely impacts of the candidate system on the organization?

                                                                                       Page | 13
Whether it is worth to solve the problem?

During feasibility analysis for this project, following primary areas of interest
are to be considered. Investigation and generating ideas about a new system does
this.

STEPS IN FEASIBILITY STUDY
Eight steps involved in the feasibility analysis are:

Form a project team and appoint a project leader.
       Prepare system flowcharts.
       Enumerate potential proposed system.
Define and identify characteristics of proposed system.
Determine and evaluate performance and cost effective of each proposed system.
Weight system performance and cost data.
       Select the best-proposed system.
Prepare and report final project directive to management.

TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY
A study of resource availability that may affect the ability to achieve an acceptable system.
This evaluation determines whether the technology needed for the proposed system is
available or not.

Can the work for the project be done with current equipment existing software
      technology & available personal?

Can the system be upgraded if developed?

If new technology is needed then what can be developed?

This is concerned with specifying equipment and software that will
successfully satisfy the user requirement. The technical needs of the system may
include:

                                                                                          Page | 14
FRONT – END- SELECTION

It must have a graphical user interface that assists employees that are not from IT
       background.
       Scalability and extensibility.
       Flexibility.
       Robustness.
According to the organization requirement and the culture.
Must provide excellent reporting features with good printing support.
        Platform independent.
       Easy to debug and maintain.
       Event driven programming facility.
Front end must support some popular back end like Ms Access.

According to the above stated features we selected VB6.0 as the front-end for
developing our project

FRONT END TOOL:

VISUAL BASIC 6.0has been chosen as front-end tool for developing the software because

of its following important features-

Visual Basic is much-enhanced version of the BASIC Programming language and the
BASIC Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The bottom line of the
enhancement is the VB can create Windows programs whereas BASIC could only
create DOS Programs. Ok, so the modifications are very major, but the idea holds true
that Visual Basic is BASIC for Windows.

One of the many significant improvements is that VB provides massive support for
easily creating the user interface to your application. This is accomplished within the
VB Integrated Development Environment (IDE), in which you use a mouse to “draw”

                                                                                      Page | 15
your application and use the keyboard to type in the code that is to be executed .The
single largest effect on coding that VB introduced was the concept of an event-driven
programming model. In the old BASIC you had to write the code to watch for the
occurrence of the user events (pressing a key, using the mouse) VB performs that
functions for you, and in fact, the only time code will execute in VB
is an response to such and event.

VB has also provided a wide variety of built-in code that programmers once had to
handle themselves. Of most significance is the built-in database handling features of
VB. It is generally accepted that over half of all VB application are written to handle
database! User will find the built-in database features of VB to be very powerful, and
that you can tap into them at whatever level of programming skill you possess.

A second area in which VB has begun to provide built-in support is that of Internet
Access. The VB features are still maturing.

One more important feature of visual basic is its debugger. A debugger is an
interactive monitoring system that you can turn on and off inside visual basic
that helps you locate statements that contains bugs.
Even before you add code, you can test your program screens (Each Form is the
basis for a screen) because Visual Basic enables you to run your programs
interactively after you create at least one Form. You can make sure that your
screens look good, and you can show your prototype to users who have
requested the program to ensure that they like what you are creating making
changes in the prototype preceding stage is much easier than making changes
      after you add the code.

                                                                                 Page | 16
BACK END TOOL:

MS ACCESS is chosen as back end tool for the development of the project because
of following powerful capabilities of ACCESS in database handling-

            Updating the database
            Retrieving information from the database
            Accepting Query language statements
            Enforcing data integrity specification
            Enforcing transaction consistency
            Managing data sharing
            Optimizing queries

 ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY

Economic analysis is the most frequently used technique for evaluating the effectiveness of a
proposed system. More commonly known as cost-benefit analysis; the procedure is to
determine the benefits and savings that are expected from a proposed system and compare
them with costs. If benefits outweigh costs, a decision is taken to design and implement the
system.

Cost-benefit analysis

Since cost plays an important role in deciding the new system, it must be identified and
estimated properly. Benefits are also of different types and can be grouped on the basis of
advantages they provide to the management.

Cost-saving benefit leads to reduction in administrative and operational costs.

Cost-avoidance benefits eliminate future administrative and operational costs

Improved-service-level benefits are those where the performance of the system is
                                                                                      Page | 17
improved by a new computer based method e.g. servicing a customer in two minutes rather
than five to ten minutes is an example of this type of benefit.

Improved-information benefits is where computer based methods lead to better information
for decision making

Direct Or Indirect Costs And Benefits

Direct costs are those which are directly associated with a system. They are applied directly
to the operator.

Direct benefits also can be specifically attributable to a given project.

Indirect costs are not directly associated with a specific activity in the system. They are
often referred to as overhead expenses.

For example cost of space to install a system, maintenance of computer center, heat, light
and air-conditioning are all tangible costs but their proportion is difficult to calculate to a
specific activity like report.

Indirect benefitsarerealized as by-products of another system.

We can define cost-benefit analysis as: -

1. That method by which we can find and estimate the value of the gross benefits of a new
   system specification.

2. That method by which we find and determine the increased operating costs associated
   with the gross benefits

3. The subtraction of these operating costs from the associated gross benefits to arrive at net
   benefits.

4. That method by which we find and estimate the monetary value of the development costs
   that produce the benefits

                                                                                        Page | 18
5. Those methods by which we show the time-relationship between net benefits and
development costs as they relate to cash flow, payback on investment, and time-in
process taking into operation factors such as inflation etc.

2.4.2.1 COST ESTIMATION OF THE PROJECT

The primary reason for cost and schedule estimation is to enable the client or
developer to perform a cost-benefit analysis and for project monitoring and control.
Cost and schedule estimates are also required to determine the staffing level for a
project during different phases.

Cost in a project is due to the requirements for software, hardware, and human
resources. Hardware resources are such things as the computer time, terminal time and
memory required for the project, whereas software resources include the tools and the
compilers needed during development.

The bulk of the cost of software development is due to the human resources needed,
and most cost estimation procedures focus on this aspect. Most of the estimates are
determined in terms of person-months (PM)

The primary factor that controls cost is the size of the project, i.e., the larger is the
project, the higher the cost and resource requirement. Other factors that affect the cost
include programmer ability, experience of the developer in the area of interest,
complexity of the project, and reliability requirements.

The most common approach for estimating effort is to make it a function of a single
variable i.e. , the project size. The equation of effort is

EFFORT = a * SIZE b

where a and b are constants. Also,

EFFORT = a * SIZE + b

Most models have used LOC (lines of code) as the size measure.

The COCOMO (Constructive Cost Model) Model estimates the total effort in terms of
PM of the technical project staff. The basic steps in this model are: -

                                                                                        Page | 19
1) Obtain an initial estimate of the development effort from the Estimate of thousands

2) Determine a set of 15 multiplying factors from different attributes of the project.

3) Adjust the effort estimate by multiplying the initial estimate with all the
   multiplying factors.

The initial estimate is determined by an equation of the form used in the static single-
variable models, using KDLOC as size measure.

EFFORT = a * (KDLOC) b

The values of a and b depend on the project type.

There are 15 different attributes, called cost driver attributes, that determine the

multiplying factors: -

The multiplying factors for all 15 cost drives are multiplied to get the effort
adjustment factor (EAF). The final effort estimate, E, is obtained by multiplying the
initial estimate with EAF: -

OPERATIONAL FEASIBILITY
It is mainly related to human organizations and political aspects. The points to be
considered are:

What changes will be brought with the system?
      What organization structures are disturbed?
What new skills will be required? Do the existing staff members have these
skills? If not, can they be trained in due course of time?

The system is operationally feasible as it very easy for the End users to operate it. It
only needs basic information about Windows platform.

SCHEDULE FEASIBILITY

Time evaluation is the most important consideration in the development of project. The time
schedule required for the developed of this project is very important since more development
time effect machine time, cost and cause delay in the development of other systems.

A reliable EasyDay retail management can be developed in the considerable amount
of time.

                                                                                           Page | 21
DESIGN PHASE

                 DATA FLOW DIAGRAM

The Data Flow Diagram shows the flow of data or information. It can be partitioned into
single processes or functions. Data Flow Diagrams can be grouped together or decomposed
into multiple processes. There can be physical DFD's that represent the physical files and
transactions, or they can be business DFD's

The DFD is an excellent communication tool for analysts to model processes and functional
requirements. One of the primary tools of the structured analysis efforts of the 1970's it was
developed and enhanced by the likes of Yourdon, McMenamin, Palmer, Gane and Sarson. It
is still considered one of the best modeling techniques for eliciting and representing the
processing requirements of a system.

Used effectively, it is a useful and easy to understand modeling tool. It has broad application
and usability across most software development projects. It is easily integrated with data
modeling, workflow modeling tools, and textual specs. Together with these, it provides
analysts and developers with solid models and specs. Alone, however, it has limited
usability. It is simple and easy to understand by users and can be easily extended and refined
with further specification into a physical version for the design and development teams.

                                                                                        Page | 22
SYMBOLS USED IN DFD’s

PROCESS

Depending on the level of the diagram it may represent the whole system as in a Context
diagram or a business area, process (activity), function, etc. in lower levels.
Symbol: Circle or a Rounded Rectangle.

EXTERNAL ENTITY(s)

External entities are sources or destinations of data. It refers to a person or group, which
interacts with the system and is outside the system. It is not a user.
E.g., Customer, Supplier, Government Agency, Accounting Department, The Human
Resources System, etc.
Usually external to the business or system but may be internal.

Symbol: Rectangular box which may be shaded.

DATA STORE

It refers to a repository of information. In the physical model, this represents a file, table, etc.
In the logical model, a data store is an object or entity.
Symbol: Two parallel lines, or an open-ended rectangle.

DATA FLOWS

It provides for the directional movement of data to and from External Entities, the process
and Data Stores.
In the physical model, when it flows into a data store, it means a write, update, delete, etc.
Flows out of Data Stores, mean read, query, display, select types of transaction.

                                                                                             Page | 23

  • 6. INTRODUCTION “Sabse Kam Daam, Har Din" Bharti Retail grows to 59 Easy Day stores In its first phase of operations, Bharti Retail has opened 59 Easy Day stores in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi. In addition, it also has launched three compact hyper stores called Easy Day Market in Punjab. The company has deliberately focused on north India in its first phase of operations in an effort to consolidate presence in one market, before expanding to another region. The Easy Day stores source fresh fruits and vegetables from Bharti-Walmart. In an interesting HR innovation the stores plan to tap workforce from the likes of cart vendors, housewives and retired personnel, by offering flexi-hour work schedules. Such groups of persons will also be enrolled for structured training modules at the Bharti Retail Academy. 'We want to be able to provide customers from all segments of society, in all parts of the country, with a viable, smart shopping option. Easyday India is the retail chain operated by Bharti Retail a subsidiary of Bharti Enterprises. It opened its first retail outlet in the city of Ludhiana in 2008. [1] The first Easyday store in South India was opened at Mysore.[2] Easyday is franchisee model between Bharti Group and Wal-Mart. Rajan Bharti Mittal is heading the operations in India. Have a Huge store chain in India, both supermarkets & Hypermarkets. Bharti Retail, a subsidiary of Sunil Mittal-promoted Bharti Enterprises, on Wednesday launched its operations by opening first store in Ludhiana, Punjab. Page | 6
  • 7. The stores, known as 'Easy Day', would be a one-stop shop to cater to every family's day-to- day needs, company officials said, adding that "it will bring together a relevant and wide product range, good quality products and great-in-experience and service-all under one roof". The store would sell personal care products, stationary, household articles, hosiery items, daily-need groceries like staples, processed foods, bakery and diary products, meat and poultry, and fresh produce. The company had earlier announced an investment of up to 2.5 billion dollars (Rs 10,000 crore) by 2015 in retail operations including multi-format retail outlets across all cities in India that have population of over one million. Announcing the road map for its retail ventures in 2007, Rajan Mittal, Joint Managing Director of Bharti Enterprises, had said that Bharti was looking at approximately 10 million square feet of retail experience throughout the country and employing about 60,000 people. Wednesday's launch is exclusive from Bharti's proposed joint venture with US retailer WalMart for the back-end operations.Bharti-WalMart joint venture is likely to kick off its cash and carry (wholesale) business in the third quarter of 2008.Under this, the two would sell products only to other retailers and not directly to the consumers, as this is not allowed under the existing guidelines. In its Ludhiana store, Bharti has employed people from the local communities and employees at the outlet have been provided intensive and structured training by Bharti Academy of Retail, which has been set up by Bharti Retail. About easyday and easyday Market easyday and easyday Market stores are owned and operated by Bharti Retail, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharti Enterprises, one of India’s leading business groups. The company has launched more than 122 ‘easyday’ neighborhood stores in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttara khand, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir, and 11 compact hypermarkets called ‘easyday Market’ in Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, National Capital Region and Karnataka. easyday and easyday Markets stores promise "Sabse Kam Daam, Har Din" and offer an extensive product mix at everyday low prices (EDLP) which are relatively lower by at least 3 -5% on a 'monthly basket of products' vis-a-vis similar stores. • 11. SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT MODEL This model displays various phase that a system has to face during its development Those phases are:  ANALYSIS PHASE  DESIGN PHASE  CODING PHASE  TESTING PHASE  IMPLEMENTATION PHASE  MAINTENANCE PHASE Page | 11
  • 12. SYSTEM ANALYSIS System analysis is a management technique, which helps us in designing a new system or improving an existing system. System analysis refers to the process of examining a business situation with the intent of improving it through better procedure and methods. Before the planning can be done, we must thoroughly understand the existing system and determine how computers can best be used to make its operation more effective. System analysis is the process of gathering and interpreting facts, diagnosing problems and using the information to recommend improvement to the system. “Analysis specifies what the system should do.” System analysis is a software engineering task that bridges the gap between system level requirements engineering and software design. Requirement engineering activities result in the specification of Software’s operational characteristic (function, data, behavior), indicate software’s interface with their system elements, and establish constraints that software must meet. Requirement analysis allows the software engineer to refine the software allocation and build models of data, functional, and behavioral domains that will be treated by software. IDENTIFICATION OF NEED As this is a very well known fact that this era of information technology and the world around us is full of competition. Today, when computerization is essential in each and every aspect of human life to keep pace with the technological changes in the world, the process Page | 12
  • 13. and activities carried out in various business and commercial organizations also need to be refined and automate. Till now each and every process and different activities of the Cafeteria are carried out manually or managed manually which need to keep records, which cause many errors and bundles of paper work. This process may result in wastage of lot of time and money, manpower and also it may not result accurately. So a system was needed to overcome the problems of: Maintain daily product purchase detail. Maintain customer detail. Maintain stock detail Manually Calculation of Bill. Due to all these above-mentioned and many other reasons this project EASYDAY RETAIL MANAGMENT is developed. This project aims to maintain daily product detail along with the stock detail and the customer detai FEASIBILITY STUDY Depending on the results of the initial investigation the survey is now expanded to a more detailed feasibility study. “FEASIBILITY STUDY” is a test of system proposal according to its workability, impact of the organization, ability to meet needs and effective use of the resources. It focuses on these major questions: What are the user’s demonstrable needs and how does a candidate system meet them? What resources are available for given candidate system? What are the likely impacts of the candidate system on the organization? Page | 13
  • 14. Whether it is worth to solve the problem? During feasibility analysis for this project, following primary areas of interest are to be considered. Investigation and generating ideas about a new system does this. STEPS IN FEASIBILITY STUDY Eight steps involved in the feasibility analysis are: Form a project team and appoint a project leader. Prepare system flowcharts. Enumerate potential proposed system. Define and identify characteristics of proposed system. Determine and evaluate performance and cost effective of each proposed system. Weight system performance and cost data. Select the best-proposed system. Prepare and report final project directive to management. TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY A study of resource availability that may affect the ability to achieve an acceptable system. This evaluation determines whether the technology needed for the proposed system is available or not. Can the work for the project be done with current equipment existing software technology & available personal? Can the system be upgraded if developed? If new technology is needed then what can be developed? This is concerned with specifying equipment and software that will successfully satisfy the user requirement. The technical needs of the system may include: Page | 14
  • 15. FRONT – END- SELECTION It must have a graphical user interface that assists employees that are not from IT background. Scalability and extensibility. Flexibility. Robustness. According to the organization requirement and the culture. Must provide excellent reporting features with good printing support. Platform independent. Easy to debug and maintain. Event driven programming facility. Front end must support some popular back end like Ms Access. According to the above stated features we selected VB6.0 as the front-end for developing our project FRONT END TOOL: VISUAL BASIC 6.0has been chosen as front-end tool for developing the software because of its following important features- Visual Basic is much-enhanced version of the BASIC Programming language and the BASIC Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The bottom line of the enhancement is the VB can create Windows programs whereas BASIC could only create DOS Programs. Ok, so the modifications are very major, but the idea holds true that Visual Basic is BASIC for Windows. One of the many significant improvements is that VB provides massive support for easily creating the user interface to your application. This is accomplished within the VB Integrated Development Environment (IDE), in which you use a mouse to “draw” Page | 15
  • 16. your application and use the keyboard to type in the code that is to be executed .The single largest effect on coding that VB introduced was the concept of an event-driven programming model. In the old BASIC you had to write the code to watch for the occurrence of the user events (pressing a key, using the mouse) VB performs that functions for you, and in fact, the only time code will execute in VB is an response to such and event. VB has also provided a wide variety of built-in code that programmers once had to handle themselves. Of most significance is the built-in database handling features of VB. It is generally accepted that over half of all VB application are written to handle database! User will find the built-in database features of VB to be very powerful, and that you can tap into them at whatever level of programming skill you possess. A second area in which VB has begun to provide built-in support is that of Internet Access. The VB features are still maturing. One more important feature of visual basic is its debugger. A debugger is an interactive monitoring system that you can turn on and off inside visual basic that helps you locate statements that contains bugs. Even before you add code, you can test your program screens (Each Form is the basis for a screen) because Visual Basic enables you to run your programs interactively after you create at least one Form. You can make sure that your screens look good, and you can show your prototype to users who have requested the program to ensure that they like what you are creating making changes in the prototype preceding stage is much easier than making changes after you add the code. Page | 16
  • 17. BACK END TOOL: MS ACCESS is chosen as back end tool for the development of the project because of following powerful capabilities of ACCESS in database handling- Updating the database Retrieving information from the database Accepting Query language statements Enforcing data integrity specification Enforcing transaction consistency Managing data sharing Optimizing queries ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY Economic analysis is the most frequently used technique for evaluating the effectiveness of a proposed system. More commonly known as cost-benefit analysis; the procedure is to determine the benefits and savings that are expected from a proposed system and compare them with costs. If benefits outweigh costs, a decision is taken to design and implement the system. Cost-benefit analysis Since cost plays an important role in deciding the new system, it must be identified and estimated properly. Benefits are also of different types and can be grouped on the basis of advantages they provide to the management. Cost-saving benefit leads to reduction in administrative and operational costs. Cost-avoidance benefits eliminate future administrative and operational costs Improved-service-level benefits are those where the performance of the system is Page | 17
  • 18. improved by a new computer based method e.g. servicing a customer in two minutes rather than five to ten minutes is an example of this type of benefit. Improved-information benefits is where computer based methods lead to better information for decision making Direct Or Indirect Costs And Benefits Direct costs are those which are directly associated with a system. They are applied directly to the operator. Direct benefits also can be specifically attributable to a given project. Indirect costs are not directly associated with a specific activity in the system. They are often referred to as overhead expenses. For example cost of space to install a system, maintenance of computer center, heat, light and air-conditioning are all tangible costs but their proportion is difficult to calculate to a specific activity like report. Indirect benefitsarerealized as by-products of another system. We can define cost-benefit analysis as: - 1. That method by which we can find and estimate the value of the gross benefits of a new system specification. 2. That method by which we find and determine the increased operating costs associated with the gross benefits 3. The subtraction of these operating costs from the associated gross benefits to arrive at net benefits. 4. That method by which we find and estimate the monetary value of the development costs that produce the benefits Page | 18
  • 19. 5. Those methods by which we show the time-relationship between net benefits and development costs as they relate to cash flow, payback on investment, and time-in process taking into operation factors such as inflation etc. 2.4.2.1 COST ESTIMATION OF THE PROJECT The primary reason for cost and schedule estimation is to enable the client or developer to perform a cost-benefit analysis and for project monitoring and control. Cost and schedule estimates are also required to determine the staffing level for a project during different phases. Cost in a project is due to the requirements for software, hardware, and human resources. Hardware resources are such things as the computer time, terminal time and memory required for the project, whereas software resources include the tools and the compilers needed during development. The bulk of the cost of software development is due to the human resources needed, and most cost estimation procedures focus on this aspect. Most of the estimates are determined in terms of person-months (PM) The primary factor that controls cost is the size of the project, i.e., the larger is the project, the higher the cost and resource requirement. Other factors that affect the cost include programmer ability, experience of the developer in the area of interest, complexity of the project, and reliability requirements. The most common approach for estimating effort is to make it a function of a single variable i.e. , the project size. The equation of effort is EFFORT = a * SIZE b where a and b are constants. Also, EFFORT = a * SIZE + b Most models have used LOC (lines of code) as the size measure. The COCOMO (Constructive Cost Model) Model estimates the total effort in terms of PM of the technical project staff. The basic steps in this model are: - Page | 19
  • 20. 1) Obtain an initial estimate of the development effort from the Estimate of thousands of delivered lines of source code. 2) Determine a set of 15 multiplying factors from different attributes of the project. 3) Adjust the effort estimate by multiplying the initial estimate with all the multiplying factors. The initial estimate is determined by an equation of the form used in the static single- variable models, using KDLOC as size measure. EFFORT = a * (KDLOC) b The values of a and b depend on the project type. There are 15 different attributes, called cost driver attributes, that determine the multiplying factors: - COST DRIVERS RATING Very low Low Normal High Very high PRODUCT ATTRIBUTES 0.75 0.88 1.00 1.15 1.40 RELY, required reliability 0.94 1.00 1.08 1.16 DATA, database size 0.70 0.85 1.00 1.15 1.30 CPLX, product complexity COMPUTER ATTRIBUTES 1.00 1.11 1.30 TIME, execution time 1.00 1.06 1.21 constraint STOR, main storage 0.87 1.00 1.15 1.30 constraint VITR, virtual machine 0.87 1.00 1.07 1.15 volatility TURN, computer turnaround time 1.46 1.19 1.00 0.86 0.71 PERSONNEL ATTRIBUTES ACAP, analyst capability 1.29 1.13 1.00 0.91 0.82 Page | 20

The final effort estimate, E, is obtained by multiplying the initial estimate with EAF: - E = EAF * Ei OPERATIONAL FEASIBILITY It is mainly related to human organizations and political aspects. The points to be considered are: What changes will be brought with the system? What organization structures are disturbed? What new skills will be required? Do the existing staff members have these skills? If not, can they be trained in due course of time? The system is operationally feasible as it very easy for the End users to operate it. It only needs basic information about Windows platform. SCHEDULE FEASIBILITY Time evaluation is the most important consideration in the development of project. The time schedule required for the developed of this project is very important since more development time effect machine time, cost and cause delay in the development of other systems. A reliable EasyDay retail management can be developed in the considerable amount of time. Page | 21
  • 22. DESIGN PHASE  DATA FLOW DIAGRAM The Data Flow Diagram shows the flow of data or information. It can be partitioned into single processes or functions. Data Flow Diagrams can be grouped together or decomposed into multiple processes. There can be physical DFD's that represent the physical files and transactions, or they can be business DFD's The DFD is an excellent communication tool for analysts to model processes and functional requirements. One of the primary tools of the structured analysis efforts of the 1970's it was developed and enhanced by the likes of Yourdon, McMenamin, Palmer, Gane and Sarson. It is still considered one of the best modeling techniques for eliciting and representing the processing requirements of a system. Used effectively, it is a useful and easy to understand modeling tool. It has broad application and usability across most software development projects. It is easily integrated with data modeling, workflow modeling tools, and textual specs. Together with these, it provides analysts and developers with solid models and specs. Alone, however, it has limited usability. It is simple and easy to understand by users and can be easily extended and refined with further specification into a physical version for the design and development teams. Page | 22
  • 23. SYMBOLS USED IN DFD’s PROCESS Depending on the level of the diagram it may represent the whole system as in a Context diagram or a business area, process (activity), function, etc. in lower levels. Symbol: Circle or a Rounded Rectangle. EXTERNAL ENTITY(s) External entities are sources or destinations of data. It refers to a person or group, which interacts with the system and is outside the system. It is not a user. E.g., Customer, Supplier, Government Agency, Accounting Department, The Human Resources System, etc. Usually external to the business or system but may be internal. Symbol: Rectangular box which may be shaded. DATA STORE It refers to a repository of information. In the physical model, this represents a file, table, etc. In the logical model, a data store is an object or entity. Symbol: Two parallel lines, or an open-ended rectangle. DATA FLOWS It provides for the directional movement of data to and from External Entities, the process and Data Stores. In the physical model, when it flows into a data store, it means a write, update, delete, etc. Flows out of Data Stores, mean read, query, display, select types of transaction. Page | 23
