This document summarizes a study on competitive conditions in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) retail sector in Turkey. It finds that the Turkish FMCG retail market is undergoing a transformation as modern retail formats like supermarkets and chain stores are rapidly gaining market share from traditional grocery stores. The study analyzes market structure, conduct of retailers and suppliers, and competitive dynamics in the sector using various data sources. It finds concentration is high in some supplier industries, which could give them market power over retailers, especially smaller ones. Concentration in the retail sector itself is currently lower than in some European countries but is expected to increase with further consolidation of large retailers.
