The THRIVE II Canada Cohort is the second cohort of the program that supports companies with novel technologies in the agrifood space. Introduction
There are 52 Million horses globally – 10 million in North America. Each
stabled horse creates 1 ton/month of waste, comprised of 70% wood
shavings and just 30% manure; conservatively, 15 Billion cubic feet of
wood is used globally in the horse industry each year.
Unlike AD in the dairy industry, horse waste is yet to find a secure
solution for disposal and reuse. The Industry is in a global crisis
creating millions of tons of unusable waste, and due to tightening
government regulations, the waste is being dumped, spread, or
composted illegally.
This inadequate disposal has led to nitrogen & phosphorous
overloading, polluting our waterways, destroying our fisheries, and
creating algae blooms. In addition, composting & spreading cause
nitrate-deficient soils and 1.4 million tons of Ch4 methane off-gassing
every year into the air we breathe.
