After hearing bad news about Jerusalem from his brother, Nehemiah prayed and fasted for the city. Four months later, when Nehemiah had the opportunity to speak to King Artaxerxes, he requested permission to travel to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls. The king granted Nehemiah's request, appointing him as governor of Judah and authorizing the reconstruction. Nehemiah worked diligently to complete the project despite opposition from neighboring governors, carefully planning the work and encouraging the Jewish people.
