The Khmer Empire existed from 802 to 1431 and was based in northwestern Cambodia, covering parts of modern-day Southeast Asia. Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century under King Jayavarman II and was dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. It is Cambodia's most famous landmark and a masterpiece of Khmer architecture, appearing on the country's flag today.
