Dear Madison Residents,
October is spectacular in New England. Especially gorgeous along the shoreline
in our beautiful community. Trees glowing with beautiful colors, pumpkin
stands lining our quiet roads and the high school football stands alive again with
spectators in sweatshirts and scarves. Kids are back in school. Holiday season is
still just far enough away. Perhaps it’s once again the perfect time to sip hot apple

The Value of a Library
The American Library Association conducts research regarding
public perception and support of our nation’s libraries. Based
on their most current findings, the ALA has launched their Libraries
Transform™ campaign to raise awareness of the true value and
impact of the services provided by libraries today as reported by
both library users and non-users. A primary concept is that libraries
today are less about what they have for people and more about
what they do for and with people. There is a significant economic,
educational, and social impact of having adequately staffed and
funded libraries in our communities.
As our nation’s public libraries are funded primarily through tax
revenue – the Scranton Library receives 85% of our annual funding
this way – it is important that our residents understand the value
they are getting for their money. It is also important to compare
that value to the actual percentage of tax support provided to each
library. In Connecticut, on average, only 1.2% of a town’s taxes
go to support the public library but the value received in return
is much greater. In fiscal year 2014-2015, total expenditures for
Connecticut’s public libraries was $195 million but the estimated
total value of library services to our residents was over $715 million!
These calculations are made by multiplying metrics such as the
number of computer sessions reported in each library by the average
cost of an internet connection in someone’s home or the average cost
of a nursery school class versus the number of preschool story hours
conducted.
Because there is no additional cost beyond the tax appropriation
to use library services, the savings for residents is significant and
economic barriers to use non-existent. According to the ALA, their
research found this “leveling of the playing field” to be of paramount
importance and is considered by residents to be one of the most
important strengths of the library. They also reported that even
those respondents who are in higher income brackets appreciate
having access to a large collection of material to borrow as it helps
them prioritize their spending.
Libraries also provide value for the local business community.
When a library is located near businesses, library patrons report they
will often spend money at these establishments as part of their trip to
the library. Library-sponsored training for job seekers also benefits
local businesses by providing the interviewing and communication
skills many employers say are lacking in new hires. The library
itself also provides direct staff jobs as well as jobs for local service
providers, such as landscapers,
accountants and repair and
maintenance workers.
The educational value of
libraries is probably the one area
most people point to first. What
is unique though is that libraries
support literacy development
beginning at birth and continuing
throughout life. The ALA notes
there is a positive and statistically
significant relationship between
children’s services in public
libraries and early reading
success in school. Librarians know how to foster the love of reading
in children and teens and strive to provide learning and social
opportunities that will better prepare them for college and adult
life. Summer reading programs have been shown to help close the
achievement gap particularly for kids from low-income households.
The public library also serves as an important gateway for new
Americans providing access to many services such as language
instruction and citizenship preparation. In addition, librarians often
serve as the portal to refer these patrons to other critical community
services they may need. Life-long learning opportunities and adult
literacy programs are other ways libraries provide educational value
to their communities.
The social value of libraries has also been recognized by many
of the community members polled by the ALA. The library is now
often referred to as a “gathering place” or the town’s “living room”
where people from all walks of life can come together to learn,
converse, attend programs, and create. The ALA research indicated
that people prefer to live near a library if possible and certainly see
access to a library as increasing their quality of life.
In 2015 at the Scranton Library, there were 420 meetings of
community groups and 6,789 children, teens and adults attended
566 library programs. Beyond our more traditional services,
Madison residents have come here to attend art exhibits and lectures,
take yoga and dance lessons, learn chess, play miniature golf, and
discuss current and historical events. Daily, people of all ages, come
in to read the newspaper, work on group projects, or learn by playing
with educational toys. Many of Madison’s community groups plan
their work and projects within our walls.
When asked, most people can come up with a fond memory
of how their local library was a value to them. And while tough
economic times can cause us to want to tighten the purse strings, the
funding spent on libraries is what allows us to be that safety net, that
great equalizer, that place of community and hope that can carry us
through even the worst of times. I can think of no better value to
a community than an organization that measures its success not by
how much we get but by how much we give.

Keeping Life Fun!
Briana Benn-Mirandi was born in New Jersey and lived in Virginia
during her early childhood years but always spent her summers here
in Madison, where her grandparents had built a cottage. She moved to
Madison full time when she was in third grade.
“The house we live in right now was that same cottage, which has stayed
in our family for many, many years!” she said. “Originally owned by my
great, great grandparents, Archibald and Cecilia Young, it was a summer
cottage with no electricity and no plumbing. We’ve since updated and
added on but it still has the scorch marks on the basement ceiling where
moonshine was made back in the day! As the story has been handed down,
my grandparents had a Ford Model T car back then and my grandmother
would use it to run over the bottles hidden in the tall grass by the apple
tree, because she didn’t approve!”
“This was the very same house that brought my mom to Madison
for summer visits,” Briana continued, “when she married my dad, from
England, they eventually decided to move to Madison because that’s
where her fondest memories were. Once she got established here in the
community as a middle school teacher, she declared that she’s never
moving away. My parents still reside here today.”
Both Briana and her sister, Britanny Buckley both graduated from
Hand High School. She went on to earn her Masters in Art Therapy from
Albertus Magnus College. Briana is currently working as Program Director
for Evergreen Woods in North Branford. She is also an active beekeeper,
a hobby she learned from beekeeping mentors and the bees themselves…
because as Briana puts it, “they’ll sting you if you don’t do it right!”
“I wanted chickens first,” she says, but got into the bees. Now I am lucky
enough to have both…bees and chickens right here on my property!”
Briana also tends her own community garden and enjoys deep level
competition board games with her husband, family members and friends.
“I love having my parents and my sisters family close by,” Briana adds, “the
fact that we are all board-game lovers keeps life fun and adds to the many
wonderful memories I will cherish for years to come!”
In 2007, Briana met her husband, Dan Mirandi. Dan attended
Quinnipiac University as an undergrad and received his Masters in
Clinical Mental Health from Southern CT State University. “I was in
college at the time I met Briana,” recalls Dan. “I used to hang out at a
friend’s apartment playing board games. Briana came over one day with
her friend, who was a mutual friend of my friend. After some social
networking together we stated dating. Eventually we moved in together
and bought a condo in Guilford.” When Briana’s grandmother passed
away, she left the house to her mother and uncle which her mother passed
on to her. The couple got a mortgage to buy out her uncle and then
moved in.
Although Dan was born in Kansas (his father was stationed on a
military base), he always had strong ties to Connecticut where his
dad had grown up, and as a baby, Dan and his family moved into his
grandmother’s condo in East Haven. His brother, Paul and sister, Abby
still live in the southern CT area.
Dan is a therapist, specializing in males and young adults. He
established his expertise at Bridges, a community support system in

West Haven, counseling young adults with a variety of issues. While still
working there, he recently opened his own practice in Madison, called
New Voyage Counseling.
As far as the future goes, Dan admits, “I need to develop my roots here
in Madison and just breath and enjoy the beautiful living space around
me. I hope to get my new business off the ground and work here full time
so I don’t need to cross over the Q Bridge anymore!” Briana hopes to
one day open an in-home art studio to give art lessons. “My artistic side
is from my mom. She was a costume designer and used to make all the
costumes for special events at her school when she was a teacher.”
The couple tied the knot in April of 2011 in Madison and their son,
Devon was born in May 2012. “Devon is four years old and already likes
playing board games, a passion that Briana and I both have,” says Dan,
“he loves hitting a baseball, kicking around a soccer ball and even loves to
cook! We just renovated our kitchen so we have more space now to allow
for some cooking messes!”
The couple volunteers at their church, the Shoreline Unitarian
Universalist Society in Madison and Briana also volunteers with the
CT Beekeepers Association on a regular basis. Together, as a family,
the Mirandi trio spend a lot of time traveling, hiking and camping.
They frequent RJ Julia’s often, enjoy Savvy Tea on weekends, Starbucks,
clamming in the summers, and going to the town green for musical
performances. But, perhaps the one thing that really makes this family
stand out, aside from having chickens and bees raised on their property,
is their love of board games…to the point of having fun but competitive
weekly in-home tournaments, with Briana’s mom, sister, brother in law,
and more. And these are not your typical board games but rather deeply
involved intense strategy games, such as Super Dungeon Explore, Battle
Star Gallactica, and Seven Wonders.
Briana laughs as she reflects on their family unity, “It’s a match made in
gamer Heaven!”

You might say that Nick
Sunday, Owner/President of
Water-Flo, Inc., grew up in the
water business. “I got my start in
my family’s well drilling business
when I was just a teenager,”
he reflects. “My stepfather
needed help with his company
in Durham so I worked most
summers”. After college, a three
year stint in the U.S. Army and
a few years in the corporate
world Nick came on board full
time. He expanded the drilling
business into a pump and water
treatment business until the business was sold in 1991.
Nick launched Water-Flo in 1992. “I was fortunate to start with a
loyal customer base and enough knowledge and dedication to keep
the business afloat during some tough economic times. Today, we are
thriving. New customers call every day. We use a variety of advertising
which has really helped spread the word.”
In 1995 Nick acquired a Kinetico dealership territory. Kinetico is a
manufacturer of non-electric water treatment systems. “Kinetico has
made all the difference for our water treatment business. We now have
brand name recognition with global support. Water-Flo is the oldest CT
based Kinetico dealer in the State,” Nick says proudly.
About 5 years ago Nick realized his company needed to diversify so
he branched out into the radon business. “It’s a related business since
there is radon in the water and we are a water company. There is also
radon in the air which is new for us but we were already in people’s
basements so it made sense”. Nick received his national certification for
radon testing and mitigation from Rutgers University in New Jersey. He
has since formed Radon Solutions of CT, a division of Water-Flo, Inc.
for radon testing and remediation. “The radon business is the fastest
growing part of our business,” says Nick. “Thanks to our many contacts
in the real estate community we have grown beyond my expectations”.
Water-Flo, Inc./Radon Solutions of CT serves residential and
commercial customers primarily in New Haven, New London and
Middlesex counties. They offer a full range of services from well pump
replacement, water treatment service and installation plus radon testing
and mitigation. They even provide free water testing for problem well
and city water.
Nick’s employee team consists of several on the road technicians (in
their distinguishable Water-Flo vans) and their office staff headed by his
wife Mary Lou who is the company vice president. The Madison couple
has two grown daughters Kelly and Kristin.
Perhaps with so many years in this line of work, certified expertise
and unique offerings under one roof, its no wonder Water-Flo has
become a well-trusted company. “We do our best to keep people happy

What We ALL Love About Madison!

Imagine a small New England town, as if pulled from a Norman
Rockwell painting. Picture an idyllic town center, complete with
white steeple church overlooking a central green, serving as a
gathering place for the community to set up lawn chairs and listen to
live music or partake in a variety of events throughout the year.
This is Madison...the place we call home, a picturesque town that
many only dream about. The town center is a block or two away from
the green with a wide (and newly renovated) Main Street and smacks
of all things great about family and neighbors. Strolling along
the new brick sidewalks you will find a barber shop (and barber) that
have been in town for 50 years, a coffee shop that looks the same as
it did 40 years ago, a independent bookstore that has survived the
Amazons of the world and a two-screen ‘throw back’ theater (next to
the coffee shop) that somehow beats the big guys to show really good
movies first … and, of course, an ice cream shop that is consistently
voted the best on the shoreline!
Many families are attracted to Madison initially because of
the reputation of the school system or to have access to the Surf
Club’s sandy beach overlooking Long Island Sound. The Surf Club
also features picnic tables and charcoal grills scattered about and
boat racks stuffed with HobbieCat and Sun Fish sailboats waiting
to be taken out for a spin. Also located here is the football field and
stands, featuring the Madison High School Tigers playing Friday night
football under the lights.
Driving down East Wharf Road heading toward the Surf Club and
Long Island Sound is the 18 hole Madison Country Club (featured in
the July issue) on the right. At the end of the road, overlooking the
water, is the rebuilt Madison Beach Hotel formerly know as ‘The
Wharf’, a must do destination for dinner, drinks and fun featuring
free music on the front lawn on Wednesday evenings during the
summer months.
The other sparkling jewel in Madison’s crown is Hammonasset State
Beach Park located maybe over two miles of town center. Here you will
find a two miles plus walking sandy beach, over 500 grassy camping
spots with vistas of Long Island Sound plus a new multi-million dollar
nature center for kids of all ages.
When we moved here the Newcomers Club was a great way to meet
new people (and still is). We joined a bridge-playing group (many of
us learning to play for the first time). We also quickly met the parents
of the kids our kids hung out with. The Library Ball (then held at the
Madison Beach Club) also proved to be good for introductions. All of
these venues have now produced lasting lifetime friendships for us!
Each event in Madison, including the annual 4th of July
parade down Main Street, the fireworks, the Rotary Carnival and
annual bed race contributes strongly to the overall feel that Madison is
THE place to live on the Connecticut Shoreline!

It’s time for all super heroes,

and his staff will hold their sixth
annual Halloween Candy Buy
Back (HCBB) program on Tuesday
November 1 from 3:00-6:00pm
this year. The HCBB is a national
program that started in 2005.
Dr. Friedler learned about the program in 2009 and liked the
idea from the start. “What I like most is this make sense for me
and for the kids. They can keep their favorites, but kids are not
eating as much candy as they used to. Now they also get the added
satisfaction of doing something to support out troops.” Here is how
the program works, the kids get a $1 for every pound of candy…
so if you bought too much for your house bring that down too.
And there are more ways that you can support the Troops and this
effort. In the past there have been as many as 500 families, some
coming from New London and Hartford counties… so tell you
friends.
“Each year the event gets bigger and bigger, the kids and parents
all have a great time, it’s a party with prizes and goodies also for
the kids”, said Shannon Roudie, Clinic Administrator. Shannon
also noted, “We get many people that just stop by to make a
donation and that helps Operation Gratitude, which supports the
program nationally and has sent over a million care packages to
the troops since 2005.
So after the kids have had that tenth piece of candy and there are
so many more left, why not pick out some favorites, bag up the rest
and come to our party? As Dr. Friedler and his staff know, eating
all that candy won’t make you fell any better, but sending some to
the troops probably will.

On Saturday, October8 from 10am-noon completed scarecrow
participants are invited to the First Niagara Courtyard to check in and
receive their location assignments. Representatives of the Madison
Chamber of Commerce will be there for check-in. Scarecrows must be in
place by Monday, October 10.
On Saturday, October 22 (rain date October 23), the Madison
Chamber of Commerce is holding its third annual Bed race. Over
20 wheeled beds will be careening down the road, pushed by teams
of (hopefully) able-bodied participants representing businesses, civic
organizations, families and neighbors. Prior to the 1pm race start, a
Showcase of Beds will be on display in the Academy School-Memorial
Town Hall parking areas and we’ll have music, food, and kids’ activities
available. The race begins at 1pm on Meetinghouse Lane (north side of
Town Green). Prizes will be awarded to the three fastest beds, as well
as to the most creative and most in need of improvement. For more

MHS Embraces the Challenges of
Historic Preservation

How would you respond to the question, “Why did you move to
Madison?” You might say, understandably, that you came for the
beautiful beaches or the good schools. The dedicated volunteers of the
town’s vibrant history organizations would probably answer differently.
They would reference Madison’s rich cultural history, its important
architectural structures, and the strong sense of community that has
grown out of our common past.
Protecting and preserving the town’s historic architectural
environment and its cultural identity has been the central mission of the
Madison Historical Society since it’s founding nearly one hundred years
ago. The MHS strives to protect and promote Madison’s cultural identity
by celebrating historically important elements of local distinctiveness
and by advocating for the preservation of endangered structures and
other relics of the past.
This month a Madison landmark, the circa 1759 “General’s Residence,”
also known as the Nathaniel Dudley House, will be auctioned off to the
highest bidder. This important architectural structure on the Boston
Post Road was once the home of Brigadier General William Wright
Harts, military aide to President Woodrow Wilson and supervisor of the
construction of such monuments as the Lincoln Memorial. A tribute
written upon his death in 1961 spoke of “General Harts’ keen interest in
civic matters, particularly those pertaining to the esthetic development
of this community.” It is disappointing, given its history that this
property has fallen into disrepair--with its future now unknown.
Recognizing the critical role that historic buildings play in providing
a sense of place is the prism through which the MHS sees the world
and defines its mission. Restoring historic structures not only conserves
resources and reduces waste, but also, and arguably as important,
preserves the character and individuality of the town. Undeniably,
Madison would be a lesser place without the charming downtown and
the green encircled by historic properties dating from as early as the
seventeenth century. The preservation of historic properties connects us
to the past and strengthens our sense of community.
The MHS strives to protect town treasures in an effort to make certain
that Madison’s historic legacy is preserved for future residents to enjoy.

Do You Think About Exfoliating?

Why is it that children have such beautiful
skin? One of the reasons is that they exfoliate
like crazy. As we mature, the process slows down
and also becomes uneven. Not only does it take
longer to shed those dead cells, but they don’t
always leave at the same time. This means you can
have patches of dead cells in one area, but not
another.
The end result is dull or lack-luster skin. A lot of
women are aware of cleaning, moisturizing and
protecting their skin, but never think of exfoliating.
The fall season is the perfect time to start thinking
of removing those unwanted dead cells since
there is much less sun exposure to worry about.
I have never been a big fan of at-home exfoliating
devices. When you add grains or rotating devices
to your routine you run the risk of breaking your
capillaries. The skin on your face is thinner than
the skin on the rest of your body which means
that your capillaries are already much closer to the
surface.
I advise leaving exfoliating to the experts. My
personal favorite is Microdermabrasion. This is a
machine with an abrasive tip that is attached to
suction. The tip helps loosen the dead cells and
the suction takes them away.
Once the dead cells are removed, the new top
layer becomes visible. The skin feels softer,
smoother and reflects light easier making fine lines
harder to see. The end result is skin that is tighter,
brighter, healthier and more youthful. Just like
children.
