As part of the New Testament Survey Course, Session 24 provides an overview of Paul's letters to his colleagues, to provide teaching, instruction and advice on their pastoral work in Ephesus and Crete. Blueprint for Building God's Church: A Word to the Rich and the WiseStephen Palm
In verses 3-10 Paul addressed believers who were not wealthy but deeply desired riches. This attitude towards wealth and possessions was leading them away from the faith and headlong into ruin and destruction (v. 9). Paul revisits the topic in verses 17-19. Where he gives instructions to wealthy Christians in the church. In our western culture it is easy for us to compare our possessions with those around us. Often this produces an attitude of arrogance and yet our hope should never be in our wealth, which is so uncertain and can be easily taken way. Whether rich or poor our true hope rests in the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who is sovereign overall. God has given us every material possession for our enjoyment. But our responsibility is to share what we have with those around us, by doing so we further the gospel and lay up for ourselves treasure in heaven where neither moth nor rust can destroy.
However, in verse 20 this epistle ends the same way it began, with those who claimed to have a special “knowledge.” This is the genesis of Gnosticism (dualism between spirit and matter) this is the doctrine of demons masquerading as the truth among the believers. We face a different type of “knowledge” today, it is called religion, philosophy and science. The greatest weapon in the first century and 21st against such teaching is sound (lit. healthy) doctrine which destroys arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God (2nd Cor. 10:5a).
This lesson, written by Ronnie Hayes, points young people to the importance of teaching from the Bible and being faithful to the text. It is the 10th Lesson in the Lads to Leaders PEARLS book.
The Need for Godly Men, Pt 2 | Cascades Bible ChurchBrent Small
In this sermon podcast, Pastor Brent looks at the New Testament model for elder leadership in the New Testament. In doing so, he presents three components of this model: the need, the directives and the role of New Testament elders.
In Titus 1:5 the Apostle Paul directs Titus to appoint elders in every church. Paul and Titus had discovered a glaring need in the church on the island of Crete, the need for godly leadership. The churches were spiritually sick and had been infiltrated by false teachers. Therefore, Titus was to go back into the church and set in place what was lacking, namely elders who were qualified and could lead the churches.
This directive to establish elders in every church was a directive not only given to Titus. In fact, the New Testament model for church leadership was an elder leadership structure. Beginning with the narrative of the book of Acts and also surveying the Epistles, we find an abundance of evidence that elder leadership was the clear model for the local church.
In this message, Pastor Brent provides a brief overview of what the New Testament has to say about elder leadership and its importance for the local church.

What are the common factors for these three commands? 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 7) Whether those who don’t know God and those who don’t obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus are synonymous, the result is eternal perish. Where did they go? 2 Thess. 1:6-9 8) Make all those who do not believe in the truth but love unrighteousness be condemned. Isn’t God love? Why is he so strict with such people? What is the definition of love? 2 Thess. 2:10
Blueprint for Building God's Church: Fight the Good FightStephen Palm
Whether we chose to accept it or not, the Christian life is a spiritual battleground. In 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Paul challenges Timothy to “fight the good fight of the faith.” To strengthen him for battle, Timothy is reminded that he made a confession of faith in Jesus Christ, in doing so he obtained eternal life. The final and strongest charge is given in verse 13, “I charge you in the presence of God.” Timothy is to protect the whole body of truth (sound doctrine) with his life and ministry. Just as Timothy was charged to wage this war, so are we. But the final victory will come at the glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ (v14). Whom God will send forth at the appointed time (Matt. 24:36).
Cascades Bible Church Sermon Notes | 9-30-12Brent Small
In this sermon on Titus 1:5, Pastor Brent establishes three “pastoral directives” as delivered by Paul to Titus that enable the local church to develop godly leadership.
After visiting the churches on the island of Crete, Paul left behind his ministry partner Titus to further develop these young churches. Paul assigned Titus the task of establishing sound doctrine and godly living in the churches so that they would then possess credible Christian testimonies.
If this mission was to be accomplished Titus had much work to do. In fact Paul tells Titus that he must correct what was lacking, namely, godly leadership. Titus, himself, was to instruct the churches in sound doctrine, model behavior that was in accordance with that doctrine and appoint godly men who could do the same.
The need of the church on Crete was godly men. The need of the local church today is godly men. In this message, Pastor Brent begins a short mini-series on the need for godly men to lead the local church by establishing three “pastoral perspectives” given to Titus by Paul.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
