Title
KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS ABOUT IMMUNIZATION AMONG PARENTS IN CHILDREN
Introduction:
Vaccination is the most effective health intervention that prevents various communicable and
non-communicable diseases like pneumococcal diseases, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTaP),
measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in childhood.
According to National Family Health Survey-5 the immunization percentage for the first dose of
measles was 87.9% whereas it has reduced to 31.9% for the second dose. It gives parents
misperception regarding children immunization. This misperception may be due to inadequate
information, myths, beliefs and some cultural issues. Parents’ misperceptions lead to suboptimal
use of vaccines which is more hazardous. Therefore a study is needed to understand the
parent’s perception towards immunization which should be used to corrective action and
improve vaccination knowledge in parents and community

Methodology:
A cross-sectional study will be conducted in Vijayawada with a sample size of 500 selected by
simple random sampling method. Institutional ethical clearance will be taken and informed
consent will be obtained from parents after explaining the study Parents of children between 1
and 5 years of age attending the pediatrics’ out patient department of the hospital will be
included in the study. A questionnaire will be given to the parents regarding the socio-
demographic details of the respondent, spouse and child, a scale to measure the parental
attitude towards childhood vaccines and vaccine hesitancy and a scale to measure beliefs and
attitudes towards childhood vaccines. The questionnaire will be translated to the local language
and the validity of translation will be checked by an independent expert.
