The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.

As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Σχολιασμός αποτελεσμάτων
Ελέγξαμε την σχετική ισοδυναμία αγοραστικών δυνάμεων (PPP) για το
αν αυτή ισχύει. Σύμφωνα με τη συγκεκριμένη θεωρία η ποσοστιαία
μεταβολή της ονομαστικής ισοτιμίας δυο νομισμάτων είναι ίση με τη
διαφορά του πληθωρισμού των δυο χωρών.
Η υπόθεση που κάνει η θεωρία (PPP) είναι ότι μέσω της διεξαγωγής
μιας παλινδρόμησης τα αποτελέσματα που πρέπει να έχουμε για να
ισχύει ο παραπάνω ισχυρισμός είναι : β=1 και α=0. Συλλέγοντας στοιχεία
για τις ισοτιμίες και τον ΔΤΚ χωρών όπως το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο(UK), η
ΗΠΑ(US), Ιαπωνία(Yen) και Ευρώπη διεξαγάγαμε 9 παλινδρομήσεις (
Ενδεικτικά αποτελέσματα πιο πάνω).
Τα αποτελέσματα αυτών των παλινδρομήσεων ήταν πως το ΄β΄ διαφέρει
από το β που υποθέτει η θεωρία. Συγκεκριμένα καθώς ελέγχαμε την ισχύ
της θεωρίας για χρονικό ορίζοντα 1 παρατηρούμε πως η διαφορά του ‘β’
της παλινδρόμησης με το ‘β’ της θεωρίας είναι πολύ πιο μεγάλη σε
σχέση με το ‘β’ για χρονικό ορίζοντα 6 και 12. Επομένως ναι μεν καθώς
προχωράμε σε πιο μακροχρόνια κατάσταση η διαφορά μεταξύ των
πραγματικών στοιχείων και των υποθέσεων της θεωρίας αρχίζουν να
εναρμονίζονται, απ την άλλη η διαφορά μεταξύ των ‘β’ παραμένει
σημαντική. Το γεγονός αυτό σημαίνει ότι η θεωρία αυτή δεν ισχύει.
Επίσης χρησιμοποιούμε και το R^2 για να ελέγξουμε αν το θεώρημα
είναι στατιστικά ισχυρό. Το R^2 καθώς παίρνει τιμές από το 0-1,
παρατηρούμε πως βρίσκεται κοντά στο μηδέν και αυτό σημαίνει πως το
αποτέλεσμα της παλινδρόμησης δείχνει πως το θεώρημα (PPP) δεν ισχύει

Οι παλινδρομήσεις που διεξήχθησαν έλαβαν υπόψη τους στοιχεία για τη
συναλλαγματική ισοτιμία μεταξύ των νομισμάτων του Ηνωμένου
Βασιλείου, της ΗΠΑ, της Ιαπωνίας και της Ευρώπης. Επίσης
χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στοιχεία για τα διατραπεζικά επιτόκια που ίσχυαν στις
χώρες αυτές κατά την περίοδο που εξετάζουμε.
Τα διατραπεζικά επιτόκια που χρησιμοποιούνται στην ανάλυση
αποτελούν σημείο αναφοράς για πληθώρα από οικονομικά συμβόλαια τα
οποία λαμβάνουν χώρα στον διατραπεζικό τομέα. Οι αποδόσεις αυτές
μεταξύ των ω άνω διαφορετικών χωρών σύμφωνα με τη συνθήκη
ισοδυναμίας των επιτοκίων θα πρέπει να εξισωθούν. Η αιτία αυτή θα
είναι η αντισταθμιστική κερδοσκοπία. Η πορεία των αποδόσεων μεταξύ
των χωρών έχει άμεση σχέση με τις συναλλαγματικές ισοτιμίες μεταξύ
των χωρών.
Με τη διεξαγωγή των παλινδρομήσεων εμείς ελέγχουμε αν τελικά η
ισοδυναμία αυτή των επιτοκίων θα ισχύει. Όπως παρατηρούμε από τις ως
άνω παλινδρομήσεις το ΄β’ της παλινδρόμησης είναι κοντά στο μηδέν
(πάνω ή κάτω). Επομένως η θεωρία δεν ισχύει καθώς το η υπόθεση για
να ισχύει η θεωρία είναι το ‘β’ να ισούται με τη μονάδα. Επιπρόσθετα
παρατηρούμε πως το R^2 όπως και στην προηγούμενη ανάλυση με τους
CPI είναι κοντά στο μηδέν που σημαίνει πως η συνθήκη ισοδυναμίας των
επιτοκίων δεν ισχύει.

Γραφήματα για την συναλλαγματική ισοτιμία
Η συναλλαγματική ισοτιμία εκφράζεται ως ξένο νόμισμα ανά μονάδα
εγχώριου νομίσματος ή ως εγχώριο νόμισμα ανά μονάδα ξένου
νομίσματος.
Βρίσκοντας τις ισοτιμίες ευρώ-λίρα Αγγλίας, ευρώ-δολαρίου και ευρώ-
γιεν, υπολόγισα τα ποσοστά μεταβολής ((τελική τιμή ισοτιμίας-αρχική
τιμή ισοτιμίας)/αρχική τιμή ισοτιμίας) της ισοτιμίας ευρώ-λίρα Αγγλίας,
ευρώ-δολαρίου και ευρώ-γιεν για το χρονικό διάστημα: 15/1/2001 έως
15/12/2014. Οι ποσοστιαίες μεταβολές των ισοτιμιών απεικονίζονται στα
παρακάτω διαγράμματα.
Συγκεκριμένα, όπως φαίνεται στο παρακάτω διάγραμμα, υπάρχει μια
σχετικά ομαλή πορεία διαχρονικά στην ισοτιμία ευρώ-λίρα Αγγλίας
(κυμαίνεται από 0,03 έως -0,03), υπήρξε μια μεγάλη απόκλιση το 2009
(θετική και ίση με 0,09) και το 2010 (αρνητική και ίση με -0,05), που
συνέχεια ομαλοποιήθηκε ξανά.

Όπως φαίνεται, η ισοτιμία ευρώ-δολαρίου ΗΠΑ παρουσιάζει πιο έντονες
διακυμάνσεις από την ισοτιμία ευρώ-λίρα Αγγλίας, ειδικά τις χρονικές
περιόδους 2009 έως 2011. Τα ποσοστά μεταβολής κυμαίνονται από 0,08
έως -0,08.
Όσο αφορά την ισοτιμίας ευρώ-γιεν Ιαπωνία, όπως φαίνεται στο
διάγραμμα, σε σύγκριση με τα ποσοστά μεταβολής των ισοτιμιών ευρώ-
λίρα Αγγλίας και ευρώ-δολαρίου ΗΠΑ, οι αποκλίσεις είναι πιο ομαλές.
Οι πιο έντονες φαίνονται τις χρονικές περιόδους 2009-2012 (από 0,01
έως -0,01).

Ο Δείκτης Τιμών Καταναλωτή (Consumer Price Index)μετρά το
συνολικό κόστος των αγαθών και υπηρεσιών που αγοράστηκαν από έναν
τυπικό καταναλωτή. Χρησιμοποιείται για να ελεγχθούν οι αλλαγές στο
κόστος ζωής. Ουσιαστικά, περιγράφει την κίνηση των τιμών
χρησιμοποιώντας έναν δείκτη.
Οι ποσοστιαίες μεταβολές του Δείκτη Τιμών Καταναλωτή της Αγγλίας
(λίρα Αγγλίας), των ΗΠΑ (δολάριο), του ευρώ και της Ιαπωνίας (γιέν)
φαίνονται στα παρακάτω διαγράμματα.
Συγκεκριμένα, στην Αγγλία ο ΔΤΚ κυμαίνεται σε ομαλές καταστάσεις
από 0,08 έως 0,03, με μια εκτόξευση της τιμής του το 2011 στο 0,01.
Μια αύξηση του ΔΤΚ σημαίνει ότι η τυπική οικογένεια χρειάζεται
περισσότερα χρήματα (εδώ λίρες Αγγλίας) για να διατηρήσει το ίδιο
επίπεδο ζωής. Επομένως, οι τιμές των προϊόντων εκείνη την περίοδο
εκτοξεύτηκαν στα ύψη (περίοδος κρίσης ευρωζώνης 2010-2012). Επίσης,
τις χρονικές περιόδους 2001, 2003 και 2007 έως 2009 και 2014 ο ΔΤΚ
βρίσκεται σχεδόν στο -0,007.

Στις ΗΠΑ, όπως φαίνεται στο παρακάτω διάγραμμα, τα ποσοστά
μεταβολής του ΔΤΚ κυμαίνονται από 0,01 έως -0,005, με εξαίρεση το
2009 που η τιμή του ΔΤΚ άγγιξε σχεδόν το -0,02 (πρώτες εκφάνσεις της
παγκόσμιας χρηματοπιστωτικής κρίσης που ξεκίνησε από τις ΗΠΑ) και
το 2012 ήταν στο -0,025 και στη συνέχεια εκτοξεύτηκε στο 0,04 (αρχές
ανάκαμψης από την κρίση).

Οι ποσοστιαίες μεταβολές του ΔΤΚ στου ευρώ, όπως παρατηρούμε
κυμαίνονταν από το 2001 έως το 2008 από 0,005 έως -0,005 (χονδρικά),
ενώ από το 2009 και μετά καταγράφονται πιο έντονες διακυμάνσεις (από
0,02 έως το -0,01), οι οποίες αντιπροσωπεύουν αδυναμίες των χωρών της
Ευρωζώνης να ανακάμψουν από την κρίση του 2008.
Όσο αφορά τις ποσοστιαίες μεταβολές του ΔΤΚ στην Ιαπωνία,
παρατηρούμε ότι διαχρονικά παίρνουν τιμές από 0,005 έως -0,005, με
εξαίρεση το 2005, 2009 και 2011 που η τιμή της ποσοστιαίας μεταβολής
του ΔΤΚ φτάνει στο -0,01 και το 2014 που εκτοξεύτηκε στο 0,02.

Το παραπάνω διάγραμμα δείχνει την πορεία του δείκτη τιμών
καταναλωτή για κάθε χώρα (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, ΗΠΑ, Ιαπωνία και
Ευρώπη), με βάση το 100. Αυτό που είναι φανερό είναι ότι ο ΔΤΚ της
Ιαπωνίας κινείται οριακά πάνω ή κάτω από το 100 κατά την εξεταζόμενη
περίοδο. Το γεγονός αυτό έχει συσχέτιση με τον αντιπληθωρισμό που
αντιμετώπιζε η Ιαπωνία ιδίως κατά την περίοδο 1999-2005.
Αντιθέτως η πορεία των ΔΤΚ των υπολοίπων χωρών έχει σχεδόν ίδια
πορεία. Η μόνη παρατήρηση που μπορεί να γίνει εδώ είναι ότι αρχικά ο
ΔΤΚ της Ευρώπης υπερέχει μέχρι το 2005 (πράσινη γραμμή). Ύστερα οι
ΗΠΑ ξεπερνούν τις άλλες δυο χώρες, ενώ η χώρα η οποία απέκτησε ένα
μικρό προβάδισμα κατά το 2011 και μετά είναι το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο (
γαλάζια γραμμή).

(b) ΗΠΑ
Τα επιτόκια στις ΗΠΑ καταγράφουν αρχικά μια φθίνουσα πορεία
αρκετών μονάδων και στη συνέχεια ενώ σταθεροποιούνται σχετικά μέχρι
τη μέση του 2004 φαίνεται να επανέρχονται στα προηγούμενα υψηλά
επίπεδα. Από την περίοδο του 2009 μέχρι το 2014 τα επιτόκια μειώνονται
σταδιακά μέχρι που προσεγγίζουν τιμές αρκετά κοντά το μηδέν.
(c) ΕΥΡΩΠΗ
Τα ευρωπαϊκά επιτόκια μετά από μια πτώση που υφίστανται,
παρατηρείται μια περίοδος 3 περίπου ετών όπου διατηρούνται σταθερά.
Έπειτα από αυτή την περίοδο και μετά από μία ανοδική διαδρομή μέχρι
το 2009 φαίνεται ο δείκτης να προσεγγίζει ιδιαίτερα χαμηλά ποσοστά.

(d) ΙΑΠΩΝΙΑ
Σχετικά με τα επιτόκια της Ιαπωνικής οικονομίας φαίνεται να μην
παρατηρούνται ιδιαίτερες αστάθειες μέχρι την περίοδο του 2006. Μετά
από μια τριετή περίοδο έντονων αυξήσεων και μεταβολών για τα
δεδομένα της, διακρίνεται από το 2009 μια τάση σταδιακής
αποκατάστασης της ανισορροπίας που παρουσίασε.
