Abstract
1. Unit Plan Abstract
This unit plan - The Oregon Trail - is meant to teach students about the general concept
of the Oregon Trail, the importance of budgeting/supplies on the trail (and in everyday life), the
anatomy/functions of Conestoga wagons, the major locations along the trail and their importance
to the pioneers, and the foods consumed on the trail/the significance of these foods within a
week. The class is comprised of 5th grade students from white American, middle-class, urban
backgrounds that are enrolled in a specialized school for the deaf and hearing impaired. There
are 12 students total (the maximum amount allowed without a teacher’s aide); 7 male and 5
female. Slight modifications have been made to compensate for mild to severe hearing
impairments, such as the implementation of tactile-kinesthetic and visual methods. The
technologies utilized in the lesson include PowerPoint, iPad, Microsoft Excel, Blogspace,
YouTube, Wikispace, Slideshare, and Blendspace.
