From the perspective of modern science, what seems to have most impacting and probably
final influence on a person’s decision-making is the ‘Reigning Thoughts’ in his or her minds.
Science believes that the cortex part of brain, which is the segment handling reason, logic
and rationality, has the final and most dominant influence in our important life-living

2. decisions, like careers, marriage, investments, relationships, etc. We all know how even a
simple info to our brain is processed by all parts of our brain and even the cellular
memories and experiences also are very much part of our routine behaviors and actions…
Somehow, what you may feel is, actually this above contention does not seem true with
most people, in contemporary milieus. Yes, the model of brain functioning or mechanism of
brain arriving at a decision may point out to the above truth but reality, as we see and
observe seems otherwise. Why?
Ideally, as science may like to work on a hypothesis that as cortex part of brain is the
newest addition of brain, over reptilian and mammalian brains, to be human is to be logical
and reasoned, therefore, cortex brain is naturally the master as it is truly the most
humanized brain part. It is this predilection which led to believing that consciousness is
essentially a cortex function. Moreover, science may hypothesize that we all live in complex
world, where we have enough inflow of reasoned and logical information, therefore, we
make reasoned and thoughtful decisions, which is handled by top brain part. That is why it
is believed that the ‘reigning thought’ in most people is the decisive element as it is about
reason and logic. In contemporary milieus of ‘smart phone’ in almost every hand, it is
somehow natural to postulate human intelligent thinking as universal…!
However, what we see and observe is that actually, it is still the mammalian brain, the
cerebellum part, primarily the amygdala and hippocampus (The limbic system) that rules
our lives as they handle long-term memories and emotions. In reality, it seems, in modern
complex milieus, where competitive attitudes and intense inequality has begun to
dominate our ‘Reigning Thoughts’, we have become highly emotional and we take most of
our decisions based on emotions, not reason and logic…!
The mammalian or monkey brain essentially works on the basis of emotions of ‘reward’
and ‘punishment’. In modern milieus, most life-living decisions are based on populist
perceptions of rewards and punishments. One can easily see; not only individuals but
nations too, as collective of individuals making most crucial of life-living decisions, riding
high on emotions, quite contrary to reason and logic. Many psychologists and sociologists
alike believe, political leaders like Donald Trump and Narendra Modi could never have

3. become such a huge populist icons and get unexpected success, if people didn’t behave and
act high on emotions…
We all know, how politics in most nations has become theatrical and dramatic, inciting
emotional decision-making, on the divisive issues of segregational ideas and entities. The
monkey brain is also pampered by markets and heightened celebrity emotionalism is
resorted to by media to keep people glued to their stupid contents…!
There is one dominant trend in contemporary societies, across the world, which is rather
manifest in social and personal behaviors of average men and women that sort of speaks
for this reality of emotional mind, which is very well the ‘Reigning Thought’. We may also
call it the ‘specificity’ of emotionalism on the populist collective ‘intelligence’ of people. This
is –
** We can see, many men and women, especially young ones label those as ‘narcissist’, who
do not fall in line with their wishes and desires. Also, the same people, who feel offended by
others, feel like ‘martyrs’. The twin emotions of ‘narcissism’ and ‘victim’ emotionalism very
much shapes the subconscious of average people. Naturally, as both emotions are
unsettling for anyone, the ‘reigning thought’ has more grains of emotions than intelligence
or reason-logic. The reigning thought essentially conforms to the monkey brain’s simplistic
interpretation of twin benchmarks of ‘reward’ and ‘punishment’…
Somehow, if we could synthesize scientific realism and pragmatic actualism, we can say, it
may be true that upper cortex brain is deciding for us but, as the intelligence, reason or
logic is now more aligned to emotional contents and imageries, which probably an over-
active monkey brain supplies in contemporary milieus of conflicts, confusion and chaos,
average person’s reason is actually emotions…!
Is it the way we are…! We can think over it… but, let us not be emotional about this
question…!
