3. Introduction
• We are a group of voluntaries who are actively looking to support
students' education in west and south parts of Sri Lanka, Tamil speaking
students who are mainly from rubber and tea estates.
• We have chosen Kalutara district and started to work on several
projects.
• Estimated Statics - Kalutara District
Total Tamil speaking estate population. 40,000 to 45,000
Students' population 5,000
Number of rubber and tea estates 145
Total schools 39
Schools with up to Ordinary Level (O/L) 14
Schools with up to Advance Level (A/L) 6 (with commerce 3)
Schools with Math and Science stream - None
4. Objective and Goals
• Increase primary one enrollment
• Provide quality childhood education
• Focus to increase grade 5 scholarship pass rate
• Increase pass rate of core subjects such as math, science and English that enable students to
continue their higher studies in Commerce, Math and Science stream
• Increase A/L pass rate and university entrance
5. Problems
• Parents are not seeing education as a passport that help younger generation to come out from
the community in order to have better future
• Students are not motivated enough to progress in their education
• Not enough teachers
• Not enough qualified and trained teachers
• School infrastructures are not enough to accommodate teacher and students needs
• Attraction and use of technology is very limited due to various reasons
6. Solutions
• We have noted that resources are limited, be it human or physical resources. Therefore, its much
difficult to relocate qualified and trained teachers to Kalutara from upcountry or north and east
part of Sri Lanka to provide quality educations to our students, but technology enable us bring
the teaching resources to our students virtually.
• We are promoting digital teaching materials, Online education and SMARTclass rooms among
our principles, teachers and students.
• With help of digital platform, we should be able to run social awareness programs to educate
parents to see the importance of the education
• Also run motivational workshops and awareness programs on regular basis to educate students
• A program to support early childhood education which is the foundation to produce SMART
students
• Regular activities or workshops that enable students to focus and improve their knowledge in the
core subjects such as Math, Science and English right from the beginning

• Donating computers and books to Waldimar Tamil Primay school at Udapusallawa and
Thoppuwa Negobo Tamil Vidyalayam

• Completed Math tuition class at Gikiyanakand Tamil Vidayalyam – Neboda, Matugama. The cost
was around LKR 90,000

• Sponsored to conduct math classes at
Kalimagal Tamil Maha Vidyalayam- Matugama
• Total cost LKR 40,000

• Sponsored to conduct math classes at Horana
Tamil Maha Vidyalayam at Horana where
students from another 2 schools also
participated and benefitted by the program.

• A set of Science and Math books for grade 11 (combined total of 564 books) which consist past and model papers
with detailed answers were distributed for 11 schools in Kalutara District.

• Moving on to Digital.
• Total of 106 pen driver (32GB) filled with e learning resources have been distributed to all 14
Tamil schools in Kalutara District.
14. Help
• Since students are stuck at home due to Covid-19, we have noted that
there is an immediate help that need to be done to bring the E-
education to our students. Following requests have been reached to us
that require immediate attention.
• Two laptops – GikiyanaKanda Tamil Vidyalayam – Neboda
• Laptop and wifi router – Malaboada Tamil Vidyalayam – Neboda
15. Help- Mid and long term
• Setting up SMARTclass room to each schools to bridge the gap in
terms of E-Education(Fixed investment).
• Continues support to run those SMARTclass rooms(recurring
expenses).
