Winner Mrs. Macey worked behind the meat counter at Janelli’s Market until her husband took up with the Methodist organist, leaving her to wear embarrassment like split pants. Then she won the Am Vets’ raffle- a trip to Miami during the Fourth of July weekend- and never returned. Instead she sent a postcard of flamingos on the lawn of an awninged hotel that Mr. Janelli butcher- taped on the meat case: “ Met a wonderful man Wears a slender moustache, Plays trumpet in a jazz band, And calls me Cara Mia.”
April Boom, it starts to pour. I feel gentle tear drops from the clouds on my arm. Slow as a snail I walk through my yard. There is no wind, just a summer breeze. The weather pacifies me. I feel complete and at rest. The rain drops start coming down hard. The rain is heaven.
Ice Cream On a sweltering day. I feel as hot as the sun. I sit at the park under the trees. When a familiar jingle strikes me. The soft, creamy, and sweet treat hit my tongue. Chocolate with sprinkles my favorite flavor. Plop , one of my scoops falls to the ground. A bunch of bugs come to lick it up.
Beach Nothing reminds me more of summer than a trip to the beach. The smell of sunscreen and ocean water Ahhhh. The hot sand that burns until you hit the water with your feet. The sound of peace comes from the waves. The sun’s smiling and not blaring sunlight . Making everything feel just right. I close my eyes. Slowly descending into sleep.
Butterflies Pretty colors soar through the air. I can only hope to catch one. They are so beautiful like a rainbow fluttering in the sky. Some land in trees others fly off elsewhere. Minuscule airplanes with shades of orange and blue. What a great sight to see early in the morning. I adore the monarchs with gorgeous orange and black wings. In all different shapes and sizes.
Figurative Language The first poem is called “Winner” and it’s by Paul B. Janeczko. This poem contains a simile in the first stanza “ with the Methodist organist, leaving her to wear embarrassment like split pants .” Meaning she is so embarrassed it’s like wearing split pants. There are no sound devices or other figurative language in the poem that I could find. The second poem April is one I have written. There is one sound device I used “Boom” it’s onomatopoeia and describes the downfall of the rain. “Tear drops from the clouds” is the use of personification because clouds don’t cry. “Slow as a snail,” is my simile describing my way of walking in the rain. “ The rain is heaven,” is my metaphor saying something is something else. It explains my feelings for the rain. The third poem “Ice Cream” is my favorite that I have written . “I feel as hot as the sun, “ is the simile I’m using to describe the way I feel on a hot day. Plop is the sound device I’m using to describe the sound of ice cream falling on the ground.
Continued  My fourth poem is called “ Beach”. Ahhhhh is my onomatopoeia because I use it to describe the smell of sunscreen and ocean water. “The sun’s smiling” is personification because the sun cannot smile which is a human quality. My fifth poem is called “ Butterflies”. I have a simile “they are so beautiful like a rainbow fluttering in the sky” comparing the beauty of butterflies to a rainbow. I start the second stanza off with a metaphor “ minuscule airplanes” which is what I call the butterflies. I also used repetition using the word orange twice.
