This poem expresses the author's positive view of aging, celebrating each new year and new experiences that come with it rather than dreading physical signs of getting older. The author finds cause for celebration in birthdays and does not want their children to learn to fear aging either through their own words or actions.
1. Ageless
By Shanon Quinn
Aging doesn’t frighten me
Though I’ve heard others groan
“Oh no I can’t be thirty,”
Some turn forty with a moan.
Aging doesn’t bother me
Though chestnut hair turns gray
Laugh lines no longer smooth
At the dawn of a new day.
I don’t let birthdays sadden me
Each and every year
They are a cause for celebration
For cakes and drinks and cheer
My children they grow older
Their knowledge wide expands
They won’t learn to fear each passing year
By my words or my hands.
