Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption Monitoring
Abstract
The requirements for supply management are important, inter alia, in the development and
testing of components for electric traction vehicles. Since these vehicles can be operated at various
distances from the development site, ensuring the data transmission to the remote supervision centre is
crucial. The data can then carry information about the condition of individual components installed in
the vehicle, energy consumption, current position, time, etc. The paper deals with monitoring of
electrical energy consumption and data transmission from an electric vehicle. There is described the
overall structure of the monitoring system which consists of a microcomputer control system, energy
meter, device for measuring of the mobile device position and the data transmission using wireless
technology.

INTRODUCTION
Nowadays, atmospheric pollution and its consequences for human health, global warming and ozone
layer depletion as well as lack of fossil fuels and large consumption of raw material among others are
very important issues. Moving from traditional fossil fuels to electricity is a challenge affecting not only
to engineering, but also requires a deeper understanding and management of the energy and power
available, and a proper matching with the type of energy storage system installed. A full electric vehicle
(FEV), as a whole, is understood as an electromechanical, mechatronic machine serving the user mainly
for traffic and transportation purposes. Besides this, it is also capable, thanks to its internal structure, of
carrying out the functions related to the accumulation of electrical energy and its supply into local
power systems of its users, and also to supply into electric network with the aim to enable the
employment and usage of FEV in support and system services in power engineering. The internal
structure of the FEV may involve several kinds of sources or accumulation elements of electric energy,
the optimum usage of which and the dynamics of energy overflowing among which can be of
remarkable commercial benefit for the user. Today's FEV have a power system which consists on
batteries. This battery is actually a group of connected cells which are again connected again to each
other configuring a group of several of them so that all together reach the proper electric motor or
motors which, by the intermediate action of a motor driver, moves the vehicle and supply further
energy to other vehicle’s systems such as lighting, air conditioning, information systems, etc. The
average amount of power needed is some 22 to 36 kW. The batteries association is usually in serial
mode so that the whole battery pack can reach the usually high voltage demanded by the electric

motor. This battery arrangement allows for modifying charging time depending on the current supplied
to the battery pack. Since the arrangement is oriented to get a high voltage, the charge and discharge
currents are usually in moderate figures. The FEV usually features an on board charger-rectifier bat
sometimes it can be charged directly through external rectifiers.
