These women have escaped a life of poverty and hunger. Most are widows or abandoned by their children or husbands. Some have escaped exploitation under the Basavani tradition. They are ill and unable to work to provide for a decent living. At SERUDS Home for the Aged, we have adopted good practices in order to provide a healthy, productive and participatory life to the elderly women residents.

E Venkatalakshmamma : My name is E.Venkatalakshmamma. I am 62 years old. I got
married when I was 20 years old. My husband was a worker in the General Store in Adhoni
Town. We have two sons. We lived in a rented house in Adhoni. My two sons got married, and
did not take care of us. My husband got paralysis and was not able to do any work. So I started
earning as a daily wage worker [coolie] . I took care of my husband’s health. I had to borrow
money from others. Sometime later, my husband died due to serious health complications.
After that I was not able to repay the loan amount which I had borrowed from others and there
was no one to look after me. So I joined the SERUDS old age home. I help in cutting vegetables
and other chores.
2. M Nagalakshmamma : My name is Nagalakshmamma. I am currently 68 years old. I got
married when I was 20 years old. My husband is a farmer. We have a son and a daughter. We
have own hut. My husband died of paralysis disease. My son did not take care of me. My son-
in-law also died. My daughter has a son and a daughter. So I went to live with my daughter.
With my daughter’s meager earning, it was not possible to take care of expenses of her children
and me, so it became harder for me to live with my daughter. I was admitted in SERUDS old
age home by my daughter. I have been living in old age home since four years. I have severe
knee pain due to arthritis. My daughter, grandson and granddaughter come to see me rarely. In
old age home, I help out by cutting vegetables and help others.
Ella Nagamma : My name is Ella Nagamma. I am 70 years old now. I got married when I was
17 years old. My husband is a farmer. We have a farm in Vipanagandla village, Kurnool district. I
used to go to the farm with my husband. We have two sons and a daughter. My eldest son
works VRA job in same village. My youngest son works on the farm. My two sons do not take
care of us, in our old age . I have asthma problem. So in 2018 I was admitted in this old age
home by my husband. My youngest son, daughter-in-law, and my husband occasionally come
to see me. In this SERUDS old age home I keep myself engaged in telling spiritual stories and
singing songs. SERUDS gives me monthly treatment and medications for my asthma problem.
Ella Nagamma : My name is Lakshmi Narasamma. I belong to Kalvagram village, Orvakal
Zone, Kurnool District. My mother and father both worked on owned farm in the same village;
we also had cattle, and sheep. I got married at the age of 28 years, to Pullaiah, who belonged
to the same village. My husband has no assets, no house and no farm. He worked as a labourer
on farms, and made a living. I was not in good health to go to work. So we had to manage with
my husband’s income. I stay home and manage the home. Even now he continues that work
and comes back after work is completed in the sugarcane depot . After 8 years of marriage, I
felt I could not stay in the village alone so I went with my husband and rented a house near the
sugarcane depot. We lived for there for 5 years with his earnings. Unfortunately, my husband
had severe pain one day and was diagnosed with lung cancer due to smoking . Luckily, we
have Arogyashree card to pay for the medical expenses. After three months , our savings got
3. over, so the sugarcane depot permitted him to resume his job. His health was fine for 4 months
and but while working, he got addicted to beedi and cigarettes again. He has been on
medicines for 10 years. We spent all the money that he earned on medicines. One day, he had
severe pain again. He was confined to bed with the disease for 3 months and died. As I could
not stay alone in the town of Kurnool and pay rent, I decided to go to my village, but there was
no one to take care of me in my village, Kalvagram. The priest of the local temple asked me to
stay there while working in the temple. The temple priest told me that I could go to SERUDS
Old Age Home. I have been living happily for the last 5 years without any difficulties,
sufferings.
