Stage 2 builds on the information your gathered in Stage 1 by:
Explaining the historical and cultural contexts of your examples.
Explaining what your examples have in common and what is different by pointing to
specifics in your examples.
Applying the terminology or interpretative methods from the learning resources in your
analysis of your examples.
For this stage, write that offers specific comparisons between your examples and some
analysis using terminology and methods from the course materials in the field of your
examples.
Instructions for Stage 2
Write includes the following:
An introductory paragraph that identifies the Humanities field with examples from and
explains why this field was of interests, Try to avoid telling the reader what's intended to do
in the paper and see if one can preview a conclusion.
Descriptions of each example that include the following information, as appropriate.
The example's title and its author, creator, or artist's full name.
Some historical and cultural contexts for the example. This might include information about
its creator, historical events from the time, and/or some contextual information about the
culture.
Images of your three examples, if appropriate, from Stage 1.
An explanation of what the three examples have in common and how they are different
based on a detailed analysis of the examples to show how one came to this conclusion. In
the analysis, please:
Use at least one of the resources in the classroom that is directly related to the Humanities
field that the paper focuses on. For instance, if you are comparing three poems, ensure that
your resource(s) from the classroom is about analyzing literature.
Rely on at least two of the terms or interpretative methods from the classroom resource(s)
in your analysis of the examples. For example, if you are looking at three poems, you could
use metaphor and rhyme scheme.
Underline or bold the terms or methods of interpretation from the class you use in your
paper.
Explain the terms or methods before or as you use them.
Provide specifics from your examples that you are analyzing using the terms or methods.
2. For instance, if you are looking at three poems, you should quote the lines you analyze (not
the whole poem). If you are looking at three paintings, you should describe what you are
analyzing, or you could even use images overlaid with arrows to help illustrate your points.
A concluding paragraph that offers some summative concluding remarks about what you
learned about all three of the cultures your examples were from through comparing and
contrasting your three examples. Did you learn that all three of these cultures express
similar sentiments about parenting, for example? Did you learn that the attitude towards
colonization was different in Spain, Africa and South America? Think about how your
examples informed you about the similarities and the differences between humans from the
cultures you covered.
Here is Stage 1: Please take the the information provided in stage one for stage 2
Step 1: I have chosen the field of music to focus on. I have selected the following three
examples of musical works from different cultures:
"Raga Bhairavi" by Ustad Bismillah Khan (India)
"Take Five" by Dave Brubeck (USA)
"La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens (Mexico)
Step 2: Describe Examples
"Raga Bhairavi" by Ustad Bismillah Khan: Ustad Bismillah Khan was a famous Indian
classical musician who lived from 1916 to 2006. He was a virtuoso shehnai player and is
considered one of India's greatest musicians. "Raga Bhairavi" is a classical Indian raga that
is performed during the early morning hours and is considered to be one of the most
popular ragas in Indian classical music.
"Take Five" by Dave Brubeck: Dave Brubeck was an American jazz pianist and composer
who lived from 1920 to 2012. "Take Five" is one of his most famous compositions and is
characterized by its unusual 5/4 time signature. It was written in 1959 and has since
become one of the most popular jazz pieces of all time.
"La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens: Ritchie Valens was an American singer, songwriter, and
guitarist who lived from 1941 to 1959. He was one of the first Latin American musicians to
achieve crossover success in the United States and is considered a pioneer of the Chicano
rock movement. "La Bamba" is a traditional Mexican folk song that Valens popularized in
the late 1950s.
Step 3: Discover the Connections
The three musical works I have selected are all examples of popular music from different
cultures. However, they all share a similar characteristic of having a recognizable melody
and upbeat rhythm designed to get people dancing. Additionally, they are all characterized
by the use of instruments such as the piano and guitar, which are commonly used in popular
music across cultures.
Step 4: Identify Course Resource(s)
I will use the textbook "The Oxford Handbook of Popular Music" for this project. This
resource will be useful because it provides an in-depth analysis of popular music from
various cultures and covers popular music's history, aesthetics, and cultural significance.
3. Additionally, the book offers a theoretical framework for understanding popular music,
which will help compare and analyze the three musical works I have selected.
