2. Archery Grade Levels: 9-12
Developmental Sequence (NASP, 2012)
SHOT EXECUTION
Stance: Feet shoulder width apart, back foot straddle shooting line, front foot at a 2
o’clock position, bow shoulder facing target
Grip: Grip bow like holding a glass, touch thumb to index finger, Set bow hand knuckles
at 30 degrees, bow arm to shoulder height, extend bow arm toward target
Nock:
Bow parallel to ground, load arrow above the nock, nock arrow at 90 degree angle, odd
colored fletching facing away
Draw: Pull or draw the string toward the right side of your face (right-handed
archer) by rotating your hips and your shoulder around until your elbow is slightly
in front of the arrow line. You should feel your upper back muscles being activated.
Anchor: Anchor by touching your index finger to the corner of your mouth. Keep
muscles active while maintaining full draw.
Aiming: Your master eye is your rear sight. Think of sighting as an alignment between
your eye, the string and your front sight. In bare bow archery (without sights) your
front sight would be either your arrow or some part of your bow riser or both.
Release: The release is a combination of relaxing your fingers and the back of
your hand all at once. All your arm and back muscles remain active during this
process.
Follow-Through: Upon release, your drawing hand will move
rearward with your fingers relaxed and end up with your thumb touching or near
your drawing shoulder. The shoulder should hinge so your elbow can move
down. The bow arm moves a bit forward then slightly both left (right for left handed
shooter) and down.
Common Mistakes:
- Stance is too open, with back foot not parallel with the shooting line
- Arrow is nocked with the odd color fletching faced toward the shooter, causing
the fletching to strike the bow.
- Draw is not pulled all the way back to the cheek of mouth and failure to use
scapular muscles.
- Aiming with the less dominate eye, causing an inaccurate shot.
- Release will lack a follow-through.
