6th Grade Information
• School day begins at 7:45 am (tardy bell) and ends 2:30 pm.
• School doors open at 7:30 am.
• Breakfast is served from 7:30 am - 7:40 am
• There are currently 6 (six) teams of 6th grade students. Each team
size is an average of 100 students.
•The first week of school is scheduled with get to know you activities,
team building, character building, good study/organization
habits, and digital citizenship with the iPads.
• Student recognition all year!

Intervention
A number of intervention opportunities will be available for students
based on testing data, classroom assessments and/or teacher
recommendation.
•Please note, these intervention courses are not requested by
students/parents, rather, they are scheduled for students based on the
academic criteria listed above.
•Letters should be coming home later this week to students who have
been identified for intervention.

Students will have the opportunity to have up to two (2) periods for elective
courses.
Elective courses are offered as either one trimester (12 weeks) or full year
courses.
It is strongly encouraged that students take the Digital Citizenship course
if it is possible in their schedule.
It is important to note that requesting elective courses does not guarantee
enrollment in those courses - Final placement in elective courses will be
based on student academic needs and staffing availability.

Pre-Algebra Placement
•Proper Placement is the correct balance between
challenge & enrichment vs. frustration and discouragement
•Initially misplaced students begin to struggle and often
become extremely overwhelmed
•Once on this rapidly accelerating trajectory – it is often
hard to get back on a more appropriate placement.
•Misplaced 6th grade Pre-Algebra students often end up in
remedial classes at the high school level

posted in August 2016 through your HAC account

TARYN
LEAP 6 – This course is for sixth graders who have been identified by PARCC data, SRI data, and/or teacher recommendation. Teacher permission is required to register for this course. LEAP 6 is a rigorous intervention class that will focus on a student’s individual needs within spelling, vocabulary, reading, comprehension, grammar, fluency, and writing processes and conventions. Students will use the READ180 Intervention Program with an intense focus on literacy acceleration through skill-based texts and activities. This course meets for two periods and students earn 2 Language Arts units.
Math 180 - Math 180 is an innovative math intervention program by Scholastic that is research-based and results proven. It is designed for students who need more intensive intervention and may be below grade level or have instructional gaps. The program is designed to deliver individualized math instruction, provide valuable skills practice, and motivate students to develop confidence and fluency in math.
Math Extensions – Math supported tutoring for students who have been identified by PARCC data, and/or teacher recommendation. This course meets for a trimester (12 weeks) and accounts for 1/3 Elective unit.
Please note, these intervention courses are not requested by students/parents, rather, they are scheduled for students based on the academic criteria listed above. Students may be placed in/removed from the Extensions courses throughout the year based on their current academic progress. Students requiring additional intervention may be pulled from one of their elective periods twice a week.

Band
Band is open to all students who are interested in learning to play and perform on a wind or percussion instrument. This band may perform two to three formal concerts throughout the year, as well as several other public performances. This group will focus on developing proper musicianship skills through daily rehearsals and participation. No previous experience is necessary.
Orchestra
Orchestra is open to all students who are interested in learning to play and perform on a violin, viola, cello or bass. This orchestra may perform two to three formal concerts throughout the year, as well as several other public performances. This group will focus on developing proper musicianship skills through daily rehearsals and participation. No previous experience is necessary.
