Instant Photo Overlays Help
I will be very short since nobody likes to read long instructions for simple
things. This is not a step, but a suggestion: always duplicate original tem-
plate from Image > Duplicate and keep working with duplicated file to
preserve original template.
1. Open Instant Photo Overlays Hor 10by8.psd, Instant Photo Overlays
Ver 5by7.psd (Vol 2 folder) or Instant Photo Overlays.psd (Vol 1 fold-
er) file in Photoshop.
2. To make things easier, first display Actions panel from
Window > Actions.
3. You can navigate to Instant Photo Overlays > Actions folder and to
double click Instant Photo Overlays.atn file.
4. There is only one action. Select: Replace Image action, then hit the
Play selection button.
5. Action will open Place dialog. Navigate to the image you want to use
and double click on it.
6. When Photoshop place image and returns you to main window it will
also turn into free transform mode. If you do not see handles around
image to scale it, press Ctrl/Cmd + 0 (zero) on your keyboard. Drag
handles in the corners to scale image to the proper size, then confirm
on Enter/Return.
7. Open Layer Comps panel from Window > Layer Comps. Click on the
left side of layer comp name (click on square on the left side of comp
name). There are 7 or 9 layer comps in each file and you can preview
them with placed image. Each layer comp has a different effect.
8. Optionally, you can change the color. Expand active layer group (a fold-
er in the Layers panel) and click or double click Hue/Saturation thumb-
nail to bring up its panel on your screen. Drag Hue slider to the left or
to the right to change the color.
And there is another way to work with templates. Instead of loading and
playing action you can double click your_image Smart Object thumbnail
to open new window/tab with its content. Go to File > Place (Place Em-
bedded) and place image you want to use. Click x in the top right corner of
tab/window and confirm with Yes. That will place the image in the docu-
ment and you can follow instructions from step 7 above. In the next sec-
tion you have detailed user guide with screenshots.

Manual method
Step 1
Go to File > Open and navigate to Instant Photo Overlays > Vol 1 or Vol 2
folder. After opening folder, select .psd file and click Open button or alter-
natively just double click on .psd file. I will recommend you to duplicate
template after opening it from Image > Duplicate to preserve original.
Step 2
Double click your_image Smart Object layer.
Step 3
When new Smart Object tab (window) opens go to File > Place Embed-
ded, navigate to the image you want to use, select it then click Place at
the bottom of Place dialog.
Step 4
Adjust the position and size of placed image, then confirm with Enter/Re-
turn or click checkmark in the Options bar.

Go to Layer > Merge Down.

Click X in the top right corner of Smart Object tab/window then confirm
with Yes.

Open Layer Comps from Window > Layer Comps.

Preview image with all overlays by clicking on the right side of comp
name: Overlay 1, Overlay 2... or use the Next/Previous buttons at the
bottom of the Layer Comps panel.
Step 9
Stop when you find a frame (overlay) you like. If you want to resize image
go to Image > Image Size, check Resample Image option (Photoshop CS6)
and type new size and resolution.
Step 10
To export single image with single frame go to File > Save or Save for
Web... To export image with all frames go to File > Scripts > Layer Comps
to Files... When Layer Comps To Files dialog appears, choose a folder in
the Destination section where you want to save images, choose format
from the File Type drop-down list, set quality or other settings in (For-
mat Options) section and click Run button at the top right corner of Layer
Comps To Files dialog.
