Personal statement
1. Since I was a little girl I've been triggered by the natural world. I spent most of my
childhood in clinical laboratories because my mom is a medical technician and while
she'd worked I used to pass my time finding curious things that I could watch under
the microscope. My dad is a chemist and my mom a biologist, because of them I
learned to love the science world without even knowing what it meant by that time.
This love and interest kept growing over the years and lead me to peruse a career in
scientific research.
Through high school I was a science and math tutor, tutoring helped me reassure
myself that studying science was something that I really liked and that I was good at. I
took 6 science courses through high school which all I passed with A, in twelve grade
I chose the Human Biology course in which I was one of the highest grades in the
class. I also spend one summer in "Centro Médico" in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the
cardiology department; it was a wonderful opportunity for me to get a taste of the
medical science world. While being involved in many extracurricular activities, like
being an active member of the student council and also of the honor student
committee, I was able to graduate high school with a 4.0 GPA and with over 150
community service hours.
Currently I'm a biology mayor freshman in The University of Puerto Rico in Cayey. I
was accepted in the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement program, which is
a developmental program that seeks to increase the capacity of students in biomedical
research to complete Ph.D. degrees in these fields. It has been a great honor to be a
part of this program. The summer before beginning college I took general biology that
I passed with an A. Also I'm currently tutoring high school Human Biology
2. My career goal is to become a scientist specialized in neuroscience. I would like the
opportunity to contribute in the search of finding a cure to neurodegenerative diseases
like Parkinson and Alzheimer’s. This would give the opportunity to study what I am
truly passionate about.
