With what two wills does each genuine Christian struggle? How have each of these wills impacted your life? What happens if we chose not to know the will of God? How do you discern the will of God? What is necessary in order to know God's will? Can a non-Christian know the will of God? Explain your answer. Does obeying the will of God avoid difficulties and pain? Explain. These and other questions are addressed in this biblical study.
3. I cannot say "our" if I live only for myself.
I cannot say "Father" if I do not endeavor
each day to act like His child.
I cannot say "who art in heaven" if I am
laying up no treasure there.
I cannot say "hallowed be Thy name" if I
am not striving for holiness.
I cannot say "Thy kingdom come" if I am
not doing all in my power to hasten that
wonderful event.
I cannot say "Thy will be done" if I am
disobedient to His Word.
4. I cannot say "in earth as it is in heaven"
if I'll not serve Him here and now.
I cannot say "give us this day our daily
bread" if I am dishonest or seeking things
by subterfuge.
I cannot say "forgive us our debts" if I
harbor a grudge against anyone.
I cannot say "lead us not into
temptation" if I deliberately place myself
in its path.
I cannot say "deliver us from evil" if I do
not put on the whole armor of God.
5. I cannot say "Thine is the kingdom" if I
do not give the King the loyalty due Him
from a faithful subject.
I cannot attribute to Him "the power" if I
fear what men may do.
I cannot ascribe to Him "the glory" if I'm
seeking honor only for myself, and I
cannot say "forever" if the horizon of my
life is bounded completely by time.
6. “He who has learned to
pray has learned the
greatest secret of a holy
and happy life.”
William Law
(1686-1761)
7. “He therefore is a devout
man who lives no longer to
his own will, or the way and
spirit of the world, but to
the sole will of God, who
considers God in
everything, who serves
God in everything, who
makes all the parts of his
common life parts of piety
by doing everything in the
name of God.”

8. Psalm 40:8 "I delight to do Thy will, O my
God."
John 4:34 "My meat is to do the will of
Him that sent Me."
John 6:38, "For I came down from
heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the
will of Him that sent Me."
Matthew 12:50, "Whosoever shall do the
will of My Father the same is My brother,
and sister, and mother.”
12. SATAN’S WILL
Isaiah 14:12–14 “How you are fallen from
heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you
are cut down to the ground, you who weakened
the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne
above the stars of God; I will also sit on the
mount of the congregation On the farthest sides
of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights
of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’
13. SATAN'S WILL:
A REFLECTION OF WHO HE IS.
MURDERER
LIAR
John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires
of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from
the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because
there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks
from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
14. Satan hates you
because you are made
in God's image and he
has a wicked, miserable
plan for your life.
15. GOD’S WILL
Romans 12:1–2 I beseech you therefore,
brethren, by the mercies of God, that you
present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable to God, which is your reasonable
service. 2 And do not be conformed to this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind, that you may prove what is that
good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
16. GOD’S WILL
Good (agathos) = fulfills its purpose; fitting;
beneficial; excellent
Acceptable (euareston) = pleasing to the
greatest degree; giving
pleasure
Perfect (teleion) = complete, mature, fully-
developed
17. GOD'S WILL:
A REFLECTION OF WHO HE IS.
1 John 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from
Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no
darkness at all.
1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love
that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love
abides in God, and God in him.
LIGHT
LOVE
18. God loves you because
He made you and
sacrificed His Son for
you. He has a
wonderful plan for your
life.
19. DISCOVERING GOD’S WILL
1. The SON of God
2. The SPIRIT of God
3. The WORD of God
4. The SAINTS of God
From a professional perspective, William Law's life seemed to be over when he was 28 years old. Son of a prosperous businessman, Law had received an excellent education at Cambridge and had a solid future as a scholar or clergyman ahead of him. Then Queen Anne died without an heir. On the ascension of the German George I to the English throne, Law refused to swear an oath of allegiance. As a "nonjuror," Law was forced to give up his fellowship and was denied further advancement in the Church of England or in any academic institution.
The outer structure of his life to his death 47 years later is easily told. For many years, he served as tutor to Edward Gibbons, father of the renowned historian. When Edward left home, Law retired to his family home where he devoted his life to writing. Celibate, rigorous, and solitary, Law honed his writing skills.
William Law's most widely known book, A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life, pulls together many of his thoughts in a lucid work addressed to the "average" Christian. It challenged Christians to wake up from their spiritual stupor and apply all their energy to the holy life: "He therefore is a devout man who lives no longer to his own will, or the way and spirit of the world, but to the sole will of God, who considers God in everything, who serves God in everything, who makes all the parts of his common life parts of piety by doing everything in the name of God."
That's well and good, you say, but what does it mean? It means that death of self is the beginning of a true prayer life. True prayer is dominated by His name, His kingdom, and His will, not ours. And thus David said, "I delight to do thy will, 0 my God." And thus Jesus said, "My meat is to do the will of him that sent me."
His name, His kingdom, His will on earth as in heaven. In heaven His name is hallowed, His kingdom is come, He rules supreme, and His will is done, and so should it be here.
When we say, "Thy will be done," we are rebelling against the world in its fallenness. We are saving. "Your will is not being done in this world; Satan has too much power here. Your will is not being done in the hearts of men they are turning their backs on You. Your will is not being done in my life and the lives of other believers living in disobedience."
God does not accept the world the way it is, or He would not be busy changing it. He would not have come into the world to destroy death if He wanted to tolerate it. He wouldn't promise to wipe away every tear if He wanted to tolerate sorrow.
Prayer is not to change circumstances so much as it is to change how we relate to them. We are drawn into conformity to His blessed person and then, no matter what our circumstances, they become different because of our changed attitudes.
Faith (Rom. 10:9) Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.)
Virtue (1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;)
Knowledge (Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.)
Temperance (Matthew 6:19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; )
Endurance (1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you;)
Godliness (Rom. 8:29 Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.)
Brotherly Kindness (2 Corinthians 1:4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.)
Love (Colossians 1:28-29 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.)
