Nepali CalendarNepali Calendar is a lunar calendar and follows a different calendar system than the Western Calendar. According to this system, the New Year begins in mid-April. Like the Julian system, there are 12 months, each month beginning around the middle of a Western month. Western world is 2013 and in Nepal 2069.BikramSambat Nepali Calendar or Nepali patro is approximately 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian/Julian calendar. Unlike the Gregorian months, the lengths of Nepali months are not predetermined, and change from year to year, varying from 29 days to 32 days. Nepali calendar is also called BikramSambat Calendar, it is used widely in Nepal and India. Countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thiland and Malaysia also use Bikramsambat calendar. All Festival dates are determined by this Nepali lunar calendar.
Nepal is a country of Asia and it lies along the southern slopes of the Himalayan mountain ranges. It is a landlocked (meaning surrounded by various countries on all sides and has no sea border) country sandwiched between India which is to the east, south, and west of the Tibet autonomous Region of China to the north. Nepal’s territory extends roughly 500 miles or 800 kilometers from east to west and 90 to 150 miles from north to south. The capital is Kathmandu. Official Name is Sanghiya Loktantrik Ganatantra Nepal (Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal)Form of government is multiparty republic with interim legislatureHead of State is President: Ram Baran YadavHead of government is Prime Minister: Baburam Bhattarai Official language is Nepali Monetary unit is Nepalese rupee (NRs)population (2012 est.) 27,003,000 Total area (square mile) 56,827 or Total area in (kilometers) 147,181 Urban-rural population is broken down: Urban (2011) 17% and Rural (2011) 83%

Namaste Nepalese culture, namaste is performed when a younger family member meets older relatives. It also varies depending upon social status and prestige. The person with lower status or prestige performs namaste first to show respect for the higher station the other person has achieved. Is also performed for praying and worshiping god.In Buddhism, Namaste is used as a greeting to approach ordained monks and nuns, since it is considered inappropriate for ordained members to touch skin. In Chinese Buddhism, especially in the Pure Land traditions, Namaste is accompanied with the greeting "Namo Amitofo" (Homage to Amitabha Buddha) to signify the meaning "May the Buddha be with you." This is also a form of thanking the ordained for services rendered. Namaste does not necessarily have to be performed with both hands. For example, if one is carrying an object in one hand, one may perform a half-namaste with one hand. As it is most commonly used, namaste is roughly equivalent to "greetings" or "good day," in English, implicitly with the connotation "to be well". As opposed to shaking hands, kissing or embracing each other in other cultures, Namaste is a non-contact form of respectful greeting and can be used universally while meeting a person of different gender, age or social status.
In Nepal, 70 different languages are spoken and there are more than 61 ethnic groups (VisitNepal, 2013). It would be important for the employee to understand that particular language that would be spoken in the part of Nepal they will be working. English may be spoken in the business setting, but the spouse and family members are likely to be placed in situations where the native language will be spoken exclusively. Practical training is essential as well, in particular for family members, to understand cultural nuances and adapt to the locality with more ease.Educated Nepalis can often speak English, because of the popularity of boarding school as public school can not compete for quality education. There are lots words of borrowed from other languages, especially English, so most of the Nepali people understand these words rather then its literal meaning in Nepali e.g. coat, TV, breakfast, basket etc.
Nepalese engage in bargaining for goods and services. It is proper to show appreciation and respect to use two hands rather than one when giving or receiving something like a business card or money. In general, it would be important for the employee (s) (HR is sending to Nepal) to understand that family and friends are of great importance in Nepal. Family, group, and community orientation are important with a focus on dependence, obedience, and welfare of others. The Nepalese have a culture set up to that involves sensing other’s needs and helping to meet these needs. Based upon these beliefs, negotiation should be executed in a manner that appears to be a win for the other person. Decisions are often made on consensus. A social hierarchy is set up based upon age and placement in family/business. There is respect for elders and their advice. Nepal is a hierarchical society, and as such titles are used to address others. Social etiquette rules are closely observed, so personal questions are not asked and personal displays of affection are not displayed in public. Touching should be kept to a minimum, and women should not be touched in public. Hindus should be greeted with a palms together “Namaste” greeting. The majority of Nepalese are vegetarians, avoiding beef and abstaining from alcohol as well. People frequently eat with their hands. The left hand is considered unclean and the right hand is used for eating. Nepalese engage in bargaining for goods and services. It is proper to show appreciation and respect to use two hands rather than one when giving or receiving something like a business card or money. One should not point with a single finger, but instead use a flat, extended hand. Emotions are closely controlled, with an avoidance of disagreement. Nepalese work toward smooth interpersonal relations. Their conversations are unhurried, and many social rituals involve meals. Timeliness is not a paramount virtue. In general, there is an absence of stress. Frequent smiling is used in formal encounters, with a medium physical distance, restrained gesticulation, and restrained feet and leg movement. Visitors to Nepal should try not to step over or point their feet at another person, sacred place, or health. Shoes should be removed when entering a home, temple or monastery. Food should not be shared from plates. Tips are acceptable but only for good work. Both men and women should dress modestly.
