William Bolcom and his Ragtime Music
William Bolcom, American composer and pianist. He has a wide range of genre for his composition
work, Piano Solo, Symphony, Chamber music and songs. He once said "picking up a thread from
our American musical history, and taking it to the next step" (Shrude, 1). What is the thread Bolcom
picked? And how he made it to the next step from his work? Between 1960 and 1970, Bolcom
recorded a lot of works by Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb, and James Scott as a Pianist. He was
fascinated by this music, and also composed many rag pieces inspired by Scott Joplin. The pieces in
Three Classic Rags that Bolcom composed in 1967 represent his early rag style, which drew heavily

Funk Music Research Paper
Funk music, a style that found its beginning in the late 60's, is a style remembered and recognised
for its influence and innovation throughout the music scene. Funk has multitude characteristics
distinctive to its genre, and these characteristics helped aid the evolution of many memorable genres
of music, from disco in the late 70's to the popular music we listen to today but most prominently, in
the emersion of hip–hop during 90's.
Both funk and hip–hop similarly manipulate tone colour, texture, pitch and structure.
Tone colour is shown in both genres in the use of horned instruments such as the trumpet and
trombones, and electronic instruments such as the keyboard and electric guitar. Examples of this is
shown in Herbie Hancock's 'Hang ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Examples of this is in John Scofields 'A Go Go' and the Hip –Hop track 'Live Or Die' by Naughty
By Nature.
Arguably the most significant difference between the two genres is the lyrical content and the way
the lyrics are presented in the music. For example, in funk music, the content of the lyric is
significantly groove based and boasts positive feelings and actions. Very rarely does a funk piece
have negative, pessimistic or gloomy lyrics. Not only are the lyrics about groove but they are
performed in groovy way, to boost the mood of the listener and create an upbeat and positive sound
for the hearer. 'Funkify Your Life' by The Meters is a great example of the positivity in used funk
lyrics.
On the complete opposite side of the lyrical spectrum is the lyrical content of hip–hop. More often
than not, the meaning behind the lyrics were heavily influenced by hardships and deep person
struggle. The lyrics were not written to boost the listeners mood or make for a happy song but to
express struggle and leave an eye opening mark and often political or in protest. Public Enemies
'Fight The Power' is an example of the significance of they style of lyrical presentation. The 1989 hit
was such an eye opener not only because of the extremely confrontational lyrical content but
because of the tone that such lyrics were presented. This was an attribute not before seen commonly

I Attended A Jazz Recital Presented By Music
I attended a Jazz Recital presented by faculty on March 9th 2016 in Marlboro Hall 1076. The recital
was performed by Bobby Muncy, Gene D'Andrea, Shaun Jurek, Andrew Hare and Dr. Nakia Verner.
The group performed the following songs, Donna Lee composed by Charlie Parker, Wave composed
by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Misty composed by Erroll Garner, Another Song(For All The Pretty
People) and Impressions composed by John Coltrane. In my essay I will discuss Impressions
composed by John Coltrane.
Jazz is a type of music the African Americans began and is best known for the mighty mood and
beat. The primary instruments connected with this type of music are brass and woodwind
instruments, for example, the violono and the saxophone. The percussion instruments, the piano and
the drums, were utilized by Gene D 'Andrea and Andrew Hare. The string instrument, violono was
played by Shaun Jurek. Singing was performed by Dr. Nakia Verner. Impressions was created by
John Coltrane in 1961, during the modern era of music originating in the 20th Century till present
day. The aspects of this music style incorporates tone color, variations of the traditional tonal
system, melody, harmony and rhythm.
Impressions was the last track composed by Coltrane before he was announced deceased on July 17,
1967. Impressions was considered as a counter creation to the creation The Love Supreme. Coltrane
utilization of "stirring lyric preludes, rhythmic abstractions, culminating in a jubilant, wailing

Dalcroze Eurhythmics Report
I attended the Dalcroze Eurhythmics workshop on February 13, presented by Stephen Neely. This
workshop focused on demonstrating what eurhythmics is and how to incorporate it into the music
classroom. Mr. Neely started off by having us walk around the room to a steady beat. He then had us
walk and wink at the people we passed, then shake hands, and finally pose for a "family picture"
together. This activity was designed to introduce ourselves to everyone and slowly get us
comfortable with one another. There were many activities that revolved around keeping a steady
beat, visually representing phrases, and creating rhythmic movements. We used various props such
as tennis balls and sticks of bamboo. We also participated in partner hand–clapping activities and
large group circle activities. A concept that was discussed in class regarding elementary general
music education that relates to this workshop is improvisation and facilitating student ideas. We
have had many discussions and I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For this activity we could only choose from whole, half, and quarter notes and each were assigned a
specific sound to make when passing it to your neighbor. The object was to choose a note value at
random and pass it to one of the people next to you in time. This was my favorite part because we
could be creative by choosing what note value to pass, but we also had to stay within the established
tempo. This was a very fun activity while also being a little stressful, since it went so fast and it was
easy to mess up if you were not paying attention. The activity required consistent concentration
throughout, but there was also a lot of laughter involved. This would be a great activity to use with
my future students, because it is a good way to reinforce the difference between each note value
while the students are still able to have fun with

Ragtime Research Paper
Ragtime
American culture involves myriads of customs and traditions inherent exclusively to the USA.
Except for religion, clothes, behavior, beliefs, or food, which define culture as a unique
phenomenon, music enormously contributes to its existence in any period of the nation's
development. Early American music is famous for a distinctive genre popular during the mid–
1890s, called ragtime, notable for its special syncopation and composers.
Ragtime used to be a solely American style of musical works composed of three or four strikingly
different sections, in other words, strains, one of which was 16 or 32 measures in length. Due to an
astonishing syncopation, namely replacement of the beat from its regular course of meter, ragtime
compositions became both threatening and thrilling to the American youngsters. The displaced beat
caused the listeners to feel hyperactive as well as evoked strong associations with so–called "low–
class" music of the Negroes ("History of ragtime," n.d.).
Although ragtime was composed for a piano, modern chronicles mention a significant role of the
banjo in the development of this musical genre. In 1881, a writer Lafcadio Hearn noted that the
blacks used the piano as a banjo, producing new ragged rhythms, later called banjo figuration
("History of ragtime," n.d.). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

which became a notable work of piano ragtime and a role model for other composers, including J.

Except for Turnip, Arthur Pryor was also a native Missouri, who wrote the most successful ragtime
compositions of the era, encompassing A Coon Band Contest, Frozen Bill, That Flying Rag, and

Analysis Of ' Oreo ' The Nickname For The Heroine '
In Fran Ross' Oreo, the nickname for the heroine character serves as the ultimate minority as she
goes on a journey to find her absent father. With the primary focus on the Leaky Pipes at a
Philadelphia subway station, Ross questions if America is bifurcated or biracial through comparing
the movements of different passengers. Although Oreo is a combination of Jewish ancestry and
African–American lineage, this politically charged passage deals with the racial stereotypes
associated with Black and White Americans. Ultimately, Ross relies on dark humor to mock the
bigotry of everyday occurrences while offering potent social criticism. The broad depiction of
people on Philadelphia's public transit reveals who is superior and inferior with a satirical tone.
Focusing on the passage details, the repetition and rhythm in the narrative, characterization of racial
stereotypes, and idea of biracial identity offers an insight into the bifurcation of American life.
Rather than existing as the standard compartmentalization of racial identity, THESIS While
underground in Philadelphia's subway, Ross repeatedly uses word correspondence to establish an
entertaining atmosphere for the reader. The vernacular is strongly based on tempo, rhyming and
movement. Fran Ross offers humorous commentary on the White and Black passengers as they
struggle to avoid succumbing to the "irritation, humiliation, irrigation, and syncopation," caused by
leaky pipes. Furthermore, she restates the repetition

The book Songs in Their Heads: Music and It's Meaning in Children's Lives by Patricia Shehan
Campbell is an anthropological study of samples of children in the US and their relation to music
and music making. The book is broken into three parts: children at musical play, conversations with
children about music, and children's musical education. Campbell's study focuses on what children
musically are and what they musically become through parents and teachers.
Campbell did not appear biased in her approach to this study. Her focus was to understand children's
musical culture. There were some questions and critiques of how musical education could benefit

The Importance Of Music In Education
Music has always been and still is one of the greatest heritage that we have as a human being, that's
the reasons why people called it the universal language of humankind. No matter where we are
music is always there around us and that show's how important music is for us human beings.
Without music, we don't have the way to express our feeling with, technically life will be dulled
without any music.
By saying that, we need to understand that music is one of the essential tools for children
development and it also helps their brain function. Through music, children learn how to
communicate their thoughts and their feelings. According to (Cecil–Fizdale 1991 in The Arts and
Early Childhood) state that 'Children's ability and need to express feelings fully and freely with their
bodies makes movement and dance a vital part of any educational program.'
Young children love to sing, they love hearing their own voices by experimenting with different
melody, tone, and rhythm. That's one of many ways younger children learn how to play. When a
softer and soothing music is playing during the day, children tend to be more relaxed and quiet.
Music is a primary experience for us human. This is why music should be the important subject to
have in early childhood curriculum.
Greata (2006) talk about the ideas of Edwin Gordon, a researcher in music education, tells us that:
'if a child is not stimulated in a particular area such as music, she will lose some of her natural
potential in that

songs, albums) through recommendations from streaming services in the past two weeks, only 43%
of the subjects received over three recommendations from their friends and families. However, data
shows that users are 5.72% more likely to listen to the music recommended from friends and family
than from streaming services again. Both channels showed a high level of confidence that users will
receive a recommendation that they will enjoy, as 61.54 of the subjects said that they have a
confidence level more than neutral that they will enjoy a song recommended by friends and family,
which is 3% higher than recommendations from streaming services. One important discovery on the
confidence level that is rather remarkable is that of all of the users, not a single one has chosen
"least confident" when we asked than how confident a user will enjoy a recommendation from
friends and family, showing that everyone has a fundamental amount of faith in proposals given by
friends and family.

Analysis Of Scott Joplin 's ' Maple Leaf Rag '
Scott Joplin was a composer and pianist of ragtime who was born in the late 1860s near the border
of Texas. He learned to play the piano as a young adult and started to travel with his amazing talent
while he was young. He is known as the king of ragtime during his generation. He is famous for
writing 44 ragtime pieces during his lifetime. He wrote one ballet and two operas as well, and one of
his pieces called "Maple Leaf Rag", eventually was one of the most well–known ragtime pieces of
the time. Joplin moved to Missouri to teach piano. Julius Weiss tutored Scott Joplin when he was a
young boy. Joplin began to be introduced to classical and folk music from her. He taught several
people like Arthur Marshall and Brun Campell to compose ragtime music there. He eventually died
later in his life in the city of New York in 1917 at the age of 49. In Scott Joplin's ragtime pieced
"Maple Leaf Rag", it is compiled with several melodic motives that have small pieces of sounds
repeated to play a rhythm. About every six seconds there is a "swung note" that is played in a long.
Joplin likes to include a lot of syncopation into his piece as well during "Maple Leaf Rag".
Syncopation is the variety of beats that are unexpected in a musical piece. The sounds that are
repeated happen in repetition. Joplin's melody is repeated by a strand of notes, and his music is
played at a fast pace rhythm because of this. He repeated the same rhythmic pattern again in his
song during the

Blues Vs Ragtime Essay
Jazz is a uniquely American style of music that developed in the early twentieth century, first
emerged in the black cultures of New Orleans, a place with great ethnic diversity and blending
backgrounds. This made it possible for different musical styles and techniques to fuse, giving rise to
the birth of jazz and since grew in popularity and influence in today's music industry, evolved into
many contrasting subgenres including smooth jazz, bebop, fusion and free jazz to name a few. Jazz
has been known by its two main characteristics, namely, improvisation and swing feeling that will
make people feel like moving and dancing. It is created primarily out of a combination of a popular

The first apparent difference is how the blues is primarily a vocal music, earliest form being singing
and hand clapping (voice and percussion) and are highly improvisational. It was simpler, with
simple chord progressions as compared to ragtime which has complex chord structure. Blues, which
can be sung freely by one person without strict rhythm, thus always enjoyed an advantage over
ragtime. Ragtime, on the other hand is tuneful, but primarily utilized highly syncopated rhythm. The
harmonies change every few beats, more march like and making it closer to "art music," less catchy
and more difficult to execute. Moreover, ragtime is polyrhythm, that is multiple rhythms of different
meter occurring at the same time; has multi–sectional form of AABBCCDD; rhythmic polarity
between treble and bass. Also, in ragtime, improvisation is not relevant as in blues because ragtime
pieces were conceived as pieces capable of standing alone. As such, embellishments and
improvisation were superfluous and not usually allowed. Despite all the differences, ragtime and
blues are similar in their backgrounds; they both were originated from African–American music.
Also, they involved some piano playing, which then produced one stepchild, boogie woogie piano.
Slower ragtime sounded a lot like blues, and certain rags as 'slow drags' illustrates the similarities
between the two art

Rap Music And Its Effects On The Lives Of Those Who...
Music plays a immense part in the lives of those who experience it. It has the power to influence
behaviors and moods and even important decisions one makes in life. A device with that amount of
power must have very meticulous monitoring. Choosing between more uplifting music and more
degrading music can be difficult surprisingly, simply because a lot of adults like rap and music
categories like that that contain a lot of degrading messages. Positive, uplifting music is a much
better choice for overall well being than negatively influenced music.
Negatively influenced lyrics in music do nothing but influence activities that degrade one 's health.
Pro–drug songs that influence and welcome the consumption of alcohol and drugs, like rap and pop,
encourage people to indulge in those kinds of activities, because they portray those activities as
acceptable and tolerable. Rap music is a very popular thing in today's society, which means it has
plenty of room to influence the consumption of drugs and alcohol. According to Tara Pope from the
New York Times, "77 percent" of rap songs today "reference drugs or alcohol," which is a
substantial number of songs. Then when teens are listening to music an average of "16 hours a
week," one can bet that music definitely has to give those teens something. Pope also says that
"music is a powerful social force that taps into an individual 's identity, memories, and mood." If
that's the case, then music that glorifies the use of drugs and

Rhythm And Meter Of Music Chapter 2 Summary
Chapter two of the text focuses in on the rhythm and meter of music, or musical time. Rhythm can
be defined as the movement of music, where meter organizes beat in music. Throughout the years
composers have created rhythmic complexities to engage the listener with a different sensation
when enjoying music by straying away from a monotone rhythm. Syncopation is the most common
way composers achieve this goal. Syncopation is defined as the "deliberate upsetting of the normal
pattern of accents" (Rhythm & Meter). In other words, the accent is displaced from the strong beat
in a measure to the offbeat, which falls in between stronger beats. In addition to syncopation,
polyrhythm can produce a similar effect in throwing off regular accent patterns.

Toni Morrison Jazz Essay
Ever wonder how an author can use elements of jazz in their novel. According to Toni Morrison
novel "Jazz" it's possible. The novel contains many jazz element to show her understanding of Jazz
music like melodies, breaks, cutting contest, soloists, composers, musical language and even
improvisation which are very important elements in Jazz music.
The first two elements of jazz that shows her understand of jazz music in the novel is the basic
melody of Morrison's novel Jazz is when she introduces a girl named violet who attends a funeral of
a dead girl, but just to cut her face of the corpse because she found out that her husband betrayed her

"I thought I Knew them," the narrator states. But it turns out the narrator didn't really know them at
all. (Morrison 220) However, as in jazz music, a key compound in regards to the success of jazz
performance is the relationship and interaction between musicians and the audience. "As a music
created in the moment, all jazz, the jam session and the cutting contest in particular, relies on the
interplay between the musicians themselves and between the performance and their audience. Like
Jazz, the novel too depends on the interplay between voices and listeners, narrator and reader, more
so than any of Morrison other novels (Grandt 304). Morrison employs this techniques in several
places throughout the novel. One of which is seen in the section leading Dorcas being shot by Joe,
where her inner prologue is merged with the narrators account of the events of that night. As the
point view shifts back and forth from the narrator to Dorcas, the events of the evening begin to build
up, quickly layering on top of another, and leading to that final moment where Dorcas lay dying.
(Morrison 187–193) This passage is important piece in Jazz music, with two soloists trading lines,
changing, adding reinventing the melody that came before. And just as in jazz music, the more the
story continues, the faster it moves, increasing in beat and enlargement that finishes in a final
moment of music, before it fades into

Beat The Movie Essay
Beats In class we learned that beats are the critical component of the scene, they are the reactions,
responses and decisions that keep the scene / story moving forward. We learned that they are based
on conflict while exposing the character's needs / wants. In all honesty, I often struggle with what
exactly is a beat; I understand the concept of it, it is more that I just struggle placing exactly when a
beat happens. For this reason, I find it extremely helpful and interesting that there are some points in
the script where (beat) is written. I think that this is something that would be extremely useful as an
actor because it allows the actor to know that they are making a decision. In saying this, I recognize
that it is used as a way to acknowledge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is especially apparent when Regina George gets hit by a bus, it does not take long for her to
recover and when she is recovered it becomes a joke because she wears a decorated spinal brace
while at prom. There are four techniques to maintain emotional distance and they are; empathy kills
the laugh, exaggeration, timing, and incongruity. Regina George is not shown much empathy, in the
script Cady does apologize but in the movie that was taken out. It definitely was an exaggeration,
considering she was hit by a bus, suffered a spinal injury and was still ready for prom. The timing
was comedic because it very much took the "jab, jab, punch" method, as in the whole movie she's
been beaten down and then at the end it was one final punch, or dare I say, hit. Finally, the
incongruity of it is that things don't belong together must collide, this is a bit of a far fetch to also be
applied. You could argue that it seems unrealistic because Regina George would never ride the
school bus because she has a fancy car and is too posh for it. All in all, the violence of it is
significantly padded because of the way it all happens. This whole idea of how pain happens in

I See Stars: New Demons Review
I See Stars– New Demons Review I See Stars is back with their fourth album, entitled New
Demons. The album was released on 10/22/2013, via Sumerian Records. It seems that they have
been working quite diligently over these past few years, as it has only been one a half years since
the release of their previous album, Digital Renegade. Although many people did not like that
album, I enjoyed it a lot, and I thought it had many standout tracks such as "Gnars Attacks",
"NZT48", "Digital Renegade", and "Filth Friends Unite" (check out the music video). With New
Demons, they have changed up their sound a lot, and it sounds quite different from Digital
Renegade. I believe that New Demons is a progression from Digital Renegade, as it incorporates
many more elements of electronic music, and the tracks seem much heavier and interesting. New
Demons blends the mix of electronic music and metal music very well. Although ISS attempted to
do that in prior albums, the electronic elements would often feel awkward and forced, and sound
somewhat out of place. In this album, the integration of different electronic music such as dubstep,
drum and bass, and even house music is amazing. In New Demons, the electronic elements feel like
they are actually part of the music. This might be due to the assistance of many electronic producers
like Celldweller, who are specialists at incorporating electronic music. You can really tell a

audience was even more distinct; this genre of music requires a high degree of musicianship,
appreciation of what jazz is, and recognition of its power to communicate feelings (Willoughby).
Many artists and bands have risen over the years, and they have often transcended the sub–genres of
jazz music. After researching various artists and listening to their music, it was difficult to choose
just one favorite artist. However, if I had to choose one, I would choose Miles Davis. His music, in
addition to his contributions to jazz, makes him one of the, if ... Show more content on

This is why I liked Miles Davis the best; his music (and its characteristics) have changed over the
years with jazz. His early music featured lots of syncopation, which is the off beat rhythms that
became popular during the Bebop era (Kaplan). This ability to create superb, engaging music with
elements of syncopation that embody his emotions is why Davis is my favorite artist. His struggles
with drug addiction resulted in sincere music that the listener can hear. Thus, the improvisation in
his music ‒ notably on "Yesterdays" ‒ makes the songs melodic and intimate (Giddins). Just as
Davis was able to vary his performance during his songs, his role in the alterations to the genre of
jazz music is also a justification of why he is my favorite jazz artist. Listening to his works, I
observed the notable swings ‒ the rhythm that makes jazz music "jazzy" ‒ during solo
performances, but also combo jazz performances with other important jazz musicians (Willoughby).
Although Davis's songs do not feature many words, I believe that his intricate music is much more
enjoyable and methodical than nearly any musical contribution of our current

Similarities Between Pop And Pop Music
Funk vs Pop
Funk music and Pop music are two very similar yet very different genres. Pop music has a wide
variety whereas funk is much more concise. They both have similar instrumentation and notation
and they both have different derivatives and time periods. Funk is a groovy genre with many
danceable features which uses key features such as syncopation and staccato and modern day pop
uses these elements but adds its own modern sound including synthesizers etc. Both genres have
many similarities and differences which will be expanded on here.
Firstly, both funk and pop have somewhat similar instrumentation, purpose, structure and notation.
Funk music includes 9th chords which is adding the 7th and the 9th notes to a triad and this is now a
signature funk sound. Funk also has complex rhythms and grooves and incorporates instruments
such as drums, horns, trumpets, vocals, guitar, bass and saxophones. Later on the use of synths was
implemented as the main lead role in the songs as well as voice boxes to manipulate singers voices.
Funk also uses lots of syncopation in the drums which is displacing the beats in a rhythm so that

Jazz And Its Influence On African American Communities
Throughout several years, numerous genres of music have been created and evolved, such as
contemporary, country, pop, and more. One genre, in particular, has greatly influenced the world and
still remains popular today. This renowned genre is jazz. Although jazz originated in the late 19th
and early 20th century, the genre has continued to develop and influence other aspects of music.
With its beginnings in African American communities, jazz features several distinguishing
components and defining qualities. Along with jazz's many influences and unique features, the genre
also includes a variety of leading musicians. The roots of jazz are often pinned to the African
American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana. Because New Orleans was at the center of trade
through its major sea and river port, music was able to develop through the numerous people who
came to and from the area. As a result of this mixing of people, past music traditions also blended.
Music traditions, such as slave songs and brass bands, contributed to a new creation. Slave songs,
which were known for their spiritual and gospel sound, were sung by slaves who were working on
plantations, railroads, fields, and more. In addition to the spiritual sound, slave songs also featured
the call–and–response idea, in which a leader sang one line and the others sang it back. This call–
and–response idea became a key element in the improvisation aspect of jazz. Moreover, brass bands
also played a role in the creation of

Essay on Ragtime and Blues Influence on Jazz

Seeing Ragtime and Blues as Parents of Jazz Jazz is a music genre that has complex characteristics
and history of development and thus many musicians and scholars face troubles in defining what
jazz is. In general, jazz is believed to have born in New Orleans. Jazz developed for the pleasure of
the social dancers. According to the "Understanding Jazz: What Is Jazz?" of John F. Kennedy center
for the Performing Arts, Jazz was created mainly by Afro–Americans, and had elements of
European and Afro–American culture. Also, it emphasizes few elements of Jazz, which are swing–
feel, syncopation, and improvisation. These different culture and elements of jazz may be explained

Thus the similarity between ragtime and blues is significant but there are numerous differences
between the two music styles. First, their origin was different. Even though they both had African
influence as mentioned, ragtime was more strongly influenced by European music style, and blues
was heavily African music style. According to Durk Sutro in his book Jazz for Dummies, "Ragtime
was European–influenced, in the sense that it was composed, not improvised, and featured carefully
crafted melodies and harmonies...ragtime could sound concisely European" (ch.5). Although
European–influenced, there is some African influence such as rhythm and African banjo music as
mentioned during the lecture. Ragtime rhythm was "the rhythms of the black dancers who used their
heels to make drum sounds, or to that of the black church singers who could vary the rhythms of a
Christian hymn so much that a white Christian could not even recognize it"(Tirro, pp.37).
On the other hand, Blues were basically from work songs of African Americans slaves at the time.
"It is a native American music, the product of the black man in this country, or, to put it more
exactly the way I have come to think about it, blues could not exist if the African captives had not
become American captives"(pp.17), said Jones and Baraka. In Jazz – A History, Frank Tirro wisely

Jazz Concert Report Sample
On March 30th, 2017 I attended a well–performed jazz concert at Prince George's Community
College. The concert was performed by a group called The Reginald Cyntje Group. The Reginald
Cyntje Group was made up of Brian Settles, Herman Burney, Lenny Robinson, Hope Udobi, and
Reginald Cyntje. The group performed seven songs including: "The Rise of the Protester," "Ballad
for the Masses," "Chant of the Revolt," "Descension and Ascension," "No Justice No Peace," "The
Piece of Resistance," and "Blues People vs the Deplorables." While I enjoyed all of the songs my
favorite was the "Dance of the Crooked Heads," which will be the topic of my report.
"The Dance of the Crooked Heads" was performed by Settles playing a tenor saxophone, Burney
playing a bass, Robinson playing drums, Udobi playing the piano, and Cyntje playing the trombone.
There was not anyone singing or doing vocals. The genre of the song was jazz and the musical style
of the composition was instrumental. I believe it is instrumental because it did not contain a voice
accompaniment, only instrumental. As stated before the genre is jazz, which can be said has smooth
and unrestricted sounds and I think this describes "The Dance of the Crooked Heads" perfectly. The
song also has an element of jazz which is syncopation. Syncopation is when there is a variety of the
rhythms of the song and they made a part or all of the song off beat. ... Show more content on

"The Piece of Resistance" had a steady beat and syncopated rhythm. This piece also is also in
quadruple meter, as jazz usually is. I would indicate the tempo as vivace because the song sounds
very lively. "The Piece of Resistance" also has periods of slight accelerando and slight ritardando.
Cyntje's trombone had a relatively low pitch which greatly affected the tone color of the song. The
dynamics of the piece was a combination of mezzo forte and forte. The dynamics kept changing due
to the slight diminuendo of loudness during a portion of the song. In addition to the elements of
music, musical concepts such melody, harmony, and texture are also important to "The Piece of
Resistance." The song's melody was played in a smoothly, connected manner, which means it is best
described as a legato. This smooth melody resulted in a consonance harmony in the piece. There is a
distinct main melody played throughout the song played by the drums being accompanied by the
other instruments. Ultimately resulting in the different sounds competing for attention, which is a
characteristic of the piece's polyphonic texture.
In my opinion, the members of the The Reginald Cyntje Group were very skilled and I would most
definitely consider them to be experts of their instruments. It was also evident that they were very
prepared and confident in their ability to play. You

Analysis
(Start with hand clapping rhythm and tap the bass rhythm with foot from Unsquare Dance) Good
afternoon everyone. I am Tom and today we will be looking at how great composers use fascinating
rhythm. Let's take a look at two fantastic songs, The Beatles, Strawberry Fields Forever, and the
other by Dave Brubeck, Unsquare Dance.
In 1961 American Composer Dave Brubeck wrote a piece called Unsquare Dance. Unsquare Dance
is a jazz piece in 7/4. The fact that it is in 7/4 is very strange, as this is an uncommon time signature.
This piece falls under the genre of free jazz, allowing the soloist to play whatever they want. Free
jazz has no set structure to it, although Unsquare Dance does have a blues structure, this can be
found in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hand clapping is always on the off beat, yet still accented, and the bass line is constantly on the
beat. These layers of rhythm being played simultaneously create juxtaposition. This gives the
atmosphere of energy in the piece.
Now, moving on to Strawberry Fields Forever first performed by The Beatles in 1967. The
composition is credited to both John Lennon and Paul McCartney. There are arguments to support
that Lennon is the soul composer, but this unconfirmed. This piece is classified as a psychedelic pop
song. Songs of this genre used strange recording techniques such as playing the tape backwards, and
using unusual instruments. Strawberry Fields Forever made use of these techniques, the end of the
song is played in reverse and a sitar is used. This is a very typical song of that era and culture.
Upon hearing the opening of Strawberry Fields Forever you will notice that it sounds very lethargic.
There are many reasons for this. At the end of most phrases there are tied notes across the bar;
therefore the listener is not hearing the first beat of that bar, which is the strongest beat in a bar, an
example of this is bar 5. It is interesting to note that some in phrases, the melody line drops in pitch
on the last note, almost like a sigh. Long droning notes in the background add to the lazy feel.
Finally, there are sections where a solo instrument is playing.

Reflection On Jazz
Final Reflection #3 – Once you have completed the above sections, please respond to the following
questions: 10 points
Did this performance make more sense to you after multiple listenings? This piece made a lot more
sense after listening to it multiple times, mostly because this was my second time really listening to
Jazz, so it was difficult to analyze just hearing it once. Also, listening to it multiple times allowed
me to pay attention to certain aspects of the song during different times. This allowed me to analyze
each section deeper instead of just getting a shallow understanding of the song in general. One
aspect that I was especially able to appreciate more than if I would have just listened to it once
would be the solos. More specifically, I gained an appreciation for the rhythms section, because
before I thought that they merely kept the beat and repeated the same phrase over and over again.
However, now after listening more carefully to it, I was able to notice more subtle interactions
between the soloists and the rhythms section. In addition, listening to this piece multiple times also
helped me understand the complexity of Jazz music, because before I would listen to it occasionally

Beats: A Music Analysis
In music, the beat is what someone's tapping foot or clapping hands respond to. It is defined as "a
regular, recurrent pulsation that divides music into equal units of time" 1. In marching or rock
music, the beat can be easily felt and is powerful. It can happen every quarter of a second; and even
up to every one and a half seconds. Beats are important to composers because they, "form the
background against which the composer places notes of varying lengths"1. Without a beat, all notes
could not be measured, because beats are used as a basic unit of time.
Rhythm is how music flows through time. Specifically, rhythm is defined as, "the particular
arrangement of note lengths in a piece of music"1. An interesting aspect of rhythm is that it has the
ability to flow freely, and it can match the beat at some time or not at all. Rhythm of a melody is
important to a music piece, because it is what gives the music personality.
Meter is defined as, "the organization of beats into regular groups"1. Based on the number of beats
in a measure, there are many types of beats. A duple meter is a measure that as two beats. A triple
meter has a pattern of three beats. The highest beat count is a septuplet meter, which has seven beats

A tempo can be considered fast or slow. A fast tempo is "associated with a feeling of energy, drive,

ten different Italian tempo markings that tells what the dynamic of the tempo is. For example, the a
moderately slow tempo is called andante, while a tempo that is as fast as possible is called
prestissimo. The reason why there are so many tempo markings, is because it's important to be
specific as possible when indicating the amount of tempo in music. However, it is not possible to
give a piece of music the "right" tempo, because different performers or conductors interpret them

Language, Language And Language
Have you ever listened to someone from another country speak English? A lot of times, people
speaking a second language will pronounce things a little differently than native speakers, or they
will talk at a different rhythm. Languages have their own pace, places where you expect people to
pause or speed up or articulate more clearly. We call this part of language an accent. People
speaking a secondary language may have a foreign accent, while those speaking a native tongue
have a local accent. Music is a lot like this. Musical rhythms tend to have natural accents, emphases
on certain notes within a meter. Just like fitting in with a new culture requires learning their accent,
accents are essential to understand musical conversation.
Metric Accents
Accents in music can appear in a few basic forms. Let 's start with the simplest. In many languages,
parts of speech contain natural accents. In Spanish for example, the last syllable is naturally
emphasized in most words. Music is the same in that there are natural accents within every score.
Every musical composition is divided into measures, units of a set number of beats, and certain
beats naturally carry more emphasis than others. The most important is the downbeat, the first beat
of a measure. The downbeat is always naturally accented, so there is no need to provide an accent
mark over it. We call an accent that occurs naturally in a measure a metric accent. In most Western
music, the first and third beats have metric

The City Of New Orleans
In the city of New Orleans emerged one of the most influential music genres in the history of the
United States of America. At the time, New Orleans was known for being a "blending pot" of people

served as a key seaport in the U.S. allowing for goods to be imported and exported. The purpose of
this city was not only strategic to the growth of the country, but also allowed for the incredible

Analysis Of The Simple Meter By The Solmization
1. For the examples in the simple meter, the solmization could be briefly divided into two groups.
The first group focuses on the metrical positions. Each beat in the measure is either spoken as
numbers or specific syllables, and the subdivisions are either specified with distinct different
syllables (e.g. the third and fifth one) or not as precisely defined (e.g. the forth one). The second
group focuses on the duration of the notes, as seen in the last 3 examples. The sixth example assigns
a specific syllabus to a rhythmic value, while the seventh is a little more vague on that, while it has a
better ability to emphasize strong beats as the quarter note gets the "ta" and "ti" lies on accented
moments most of the time. The last one which uses well–known words makes use of the natural
speech rhythm to perform the job of the syllables in the sixth and seventh example.
The examples which emphasized note value still operate in the same way as simple meter when it
comes to compound meter, but the others show more variations in thoughts. The first example
counts the subdivisions as the basic unit. In this case, instead of thinking in meter, it acts more like
the "ti–ri–ti–ri" method which focuses on the duration of the notes. The ones which still focuses on
the meter (2,3,4,5,8,9) still make use of the syllables to subdivide the beat. Example 2 and 4
specifies each subdivision up to the sixteenth–note level, while others are not as precise. For
examples 6, only the beat is spoken

Essay on Bossa Nova, the Misunderstood

World Music
Prof. Searles
Bossa Nova: The Misunderstood
" Tall and tan and young and lovely,
The girl from Ipanena goes walking and,
When she passes each one she passes goes, ‘Ahh.' "
These are the first lyrics of, probably, one of the most famous bossa nova songs sung by Frank
Sinatra. The melody of the song is as smooth as the singer, the rhythm is laid back, and the lyrics are
simple. Unfortunately, Frank Sinatra's portrayal of this Bossa Nova classic is detrimental to the
music's image. The Bossa Nova should not just be considered lounge music, for it is much more
than that. The Bosa Nova is a style of Latin music that has subtle complexities and deserves much
more credit than is given; once people have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bataria has three primary instruments, the surdoo, agogo, and tambourine. The surdo is a
membranophone that acts as a bass drum and normally comes in three different sizes that vary in
pitch. These instruments are the heart of the entire ensemble. The tambourine is also a
membranophone that is normally played with one stick while the hand that holds the drum is used to
mute which helps accentuate some beats and muffle others. The agogo acts as the melodic
instrument even though there are only two notes that can be played. The agogo is an idiophone that
resembles two different sized cow bells attached together.
Samba is normally played at a fast tempo and contains many overlapping complicated rhythms

emphasis on threes while playing in duple (you will either hear this through accents or triplets).
When listening, we can hear the syncopation between the different rhythms due to the polyrhythm
of the music. One might ask how samba then relates to the Bossa Nova if the music itself is fast,
loud, and has an emphasis on percussion and not so much melody or lyrics. The structure of the
Bossa Nova is pretty much identical to that of samba except much more laid back; it is "samba
broken down to its bare essentials" (The Brazilian Sound, 55). However, the structure is not the only
aspect of samba that relates to the bossa nova, the melody is similar as well. The bossa nova

Characteristics Of Soul And Funk Guitar Style

One of the most significant features in soul music is "call and response". Briefly, this feature could
be described as the communicating between musicians in a strong and violent way: one 'calls' and
one 'responses'. James Brown's band embodies this characteristic very well. The band combines the
psychotic falsetto and metallic guitar being strummed in response. The musicians on different places
responds to each other throughout the play. As for the guitar, they interact by playing not at the same
time assisting each other but strumming one responding to each other shouting out the rhythms.
Pulsing polyrhythm was then created by the horn and the fractured bass lines made the music noisy
and shocking.
Funk music is also the successor to the soul music of the 1960s. The new keyboards produce a dual
role as rhythm to lead instrument which is no longer confined to the traditional rhythmic patterns
such as drums and bass. Funk music style could be created by 'pulse with percussive strength' and
'melodic lines', which are basic melodies of the R&B and soul tune. Melodic instruments and
rhythm instruments such as guitar could create this kind of effect. Beats based on the one and three
counts in the four–four time were called downbeats. Downbeats were particularly emphasized on
funk music. Referring to James Brown's guitarists Jimmy Nolen and Cheese

William Bolcom Research Paper

  • 1. William Bolcom Research Paper Dawei Hong Dr. Goertzen American Music Dec 3, 2014 William Bolcom and his Ragtime Music William Bolcom, American composer and pianist. He has a wide range of genre for his composition work, Piano Solo, Symphony, Chamber music and songs. He once said "picking up a thread from our American musical history, and taking it to the next step" (Shrude, 1). What is the thread Bolcom picked? And how he made it to the next step from his work? Between 1960 and 1970, Bolcom recorded a lot of works by Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb, and James Scott as a Pianist. He was fascinated by this music, and also composed many rag pieces inspired by Scott Joplin. The pieces in Three Classic Rags that Bolcom composed in 1967 represent his early rag style, which drew heavily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Trouble in the Music World." • 2. Funk Music Research Paper Funk music, a style that found its beginning in the late 60's, is a style remembered and recognised for its influence and innovation throughout the music scene. Funk has multitude characteristics distinctive to its genre, and these characteristics helped aid the evolution of many memorable genres of music, from disco in the late 70's to the popular music we listen to today but most prominently, in the emersion of hip–hop during 90's. Both funk and hip–hop similarly manipulate tone colour, texture, pitch and structure. Tone colour is shown in both genres in the use of horned instruments such as the trumpet and trombones, and electronic instruments such as the keyboard and electric guitar. Examples of this is shown in Herbie Hancock's 'Hang ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Examples of this is in John Scofields 'A Go Go' and the Hip –Hop track 'Live Or Die' by Naughty By Nature. Arguably the most significant difference between the two genres is the lyrical content and the way the lyrics are presented in the music. For example, in funk music, the content of the lyric is significantly groove based and boasts positive feelings and actions. Very rarely does a funk piece have negative, pessimistic or gloomy lyrics. Not only are the lyrics about groove but they are performed in groovy way, to boost the mood of the listener and create an upbeat and positive sound for the hearer. 'Funkify Your Life' by The Meters is a great example of the positivity in used funk lyrics. On the complete opposite side of the lyrical spectrum is the lyrical content of hip–hop. More often than not, the meaning behind the lyrics were heavily influenced by hardships and deep person struggle. The lyrics were not written to boost the listeners mood or make for a happy song but to express struggle and leave an eye opening mark and often political or in protest. Public Enemies 'Fight The Power' is an example of the significance of they style of lyrical presentation. The 1989 hit was such an eye opener not only because of the extremely confrontational lyrical content but because of the tone that such lyrics were presented. This was an attribute not before seen commonly in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. I Attended A Jazz Recital Presented By Music I attended a Jazz Recital presented by faculty on March 9th 2016 in Marlboro Hall 1076. The recital was performed by Bobby Muncy, Gene D'Andrea, Shaun Jurek, Andrew Hare and Dr. Nakia Verner. The group performed the following songs, Donna Lee composed by Charlie Parker, Wave composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Misty composed by Erroll Garner, Another Song(For All The Pretty People) and Impressions composed by John Coltrane. In my essay I will discuss Impressions composed by John Coltrane. Jazz is a type of music the African Americans began and is best known for the mighty mood and beat. The primary instruments connected with this type of music are brass and woodwind instruments, for example, the violono and the saxophone. The percussion instruments, the piano and the drums, were utilized by Gene D 'Andrea and Andrew Hare. The string instrument, violono was played by Shaun Jurek. Singing was performed by Dr. Nakia Verner. Impressions was created by John Coltrane in 1961, during the modern era of music originating in the 20th Century till present day. The aspects of this music style incorporates tone color, variations of the traditional tonal system, melody, harmony and rhythm. Impressions was the last track composed by Coltrane before he was announced deceased on July 17, 1967. Impressions was considered as a counter creation to the creation The Love Supreme. • 4. Dalcroze Eurhythmics Report I attended the Dalcroze Eurhythmics workshop on February 13, presented by Stephen Neely. This workshop focused on demonstrating what eurhythmics is and how to incorporate it into the music classroom. Mr. Neely started off by having us walk around the room to a steady beat. He then had us walk and wink at the people we passed, then shake hands, and finally pose for a "family picture" together. This activity was designed to introduce ourselves to everyone and slowly get us comfortable with one another. There were many activities that revolved around keeping a steady beat, visually representing phrases, and creating rhythmic movements. We used various props such as tennis balls and sticks of bamboo. We also participated in partner hand–clapping activities and large group circle activities. A concept that was discussed in class regarding elementary general music education that relates to this workshop is improvisation and facilitating student ideas. We have had many discussions and I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For this activity we could only choose from whole, half, and quarter notes and each were assigned a specific sound to make when passing it to your neighbor. The object was to choose a note value at random and pass it to one of the people next to you in time. This was my favorite part because we could be creative by choosing what note value to pass, but we also had to stay within the established tempo. This was a very fun activity while also being a little stressful, since it went so fast and it was easy to mess up if you were not paying attention. The activity required consistent concentration throughout, but there was also a lot of laughter involved. This would be a great activity to use with my future students, because it is a good way to reinforce the difference between each note value while the students are still able to have fun with ... • 5. Ragtime Research Paper Ragtime American culture involves myriads of customs and traditions inherent exclusively to the USA. Except for religion, clothes, behavior, beliefs, or food, which define culture as a unique phenomenon, music enormously contributes to its existence in any period of the nation's development. Early American music is famous for a distinctive genre popular during the mid– 1890s, called ragtime, notable for its special syncopation and composers. Ragtime used to be a solely American style of musical works composed of three or four strikingly different sections, in other words, strains, one of which was 16 or 32 measures in length. Due to an astonishing syncopation, namely replacement of the beat from its regular course of meter, ragtime compositions became both threatening and thrilling to the American youngsters. The displaced beat caused the listeners to feel hyperactive as well as evoked strong associations with so–called "low– class" music of the Negroes ("History of ragtime," n.d.). Although ragtime was composed for a piano, modern chronicles mention a significant role of the banjo in the development of this musical genre. In 1881, a writer Lafcadio Hearn noted that the blacks used the piano as a banjo, producing new ragged rhythms, later called banjo figuration ("History of ragtime," n.d.). ... • 6. Analysis Of ' Oreo ' The Nickname For The Heroine ' In Fran Ross' Oreo, the nickname for the heroine character serves as the ultimate minority as she goes on a journey to find her absent father. With the primary focus on the Leaky Pipes at a Philadelphia subway station, Ross questions if America is bifurcated or biracial through comparing the movements of different passengers. Although Oreo is a combination of Jewish ancestry and African–American lineage, this politically charged passage deals with the racial stereotypes associated with Black and White Americans. Ultimately, Ross relies on dark humor to mock the bigotry of everyday occurrences while offering potent social criticism. The broad depiction of people on Philadelphia's public transit reveals who is superior and inferior with a satirical tone. Focusing on the passage details, the repetition and rhythm in the narrative, characterization of racial stereotypes, and idea of biracial identity offers an insight into the bifurcation of American life. Rather than existing as the standard compartmentalization of racial identity, THESIS While underground in Philadelphia's subway, Ross repeatedly uses word correspondence to establish an entertaining atmosphere for the reader. The vernacular is strongly based on tempo, rhyming and movement. Fran Ross offers humorous commentary on the White and Black passengers as they struggle to avoid succumbing to the "irritation, humiliation, irrigation, and syncopation," caused by leaky pipes. Furthermore, she restates the repetition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Importance Of Music In Education Music has always been and still is one of the greatest heritage that we have as a human being, that's the reasons why people called it the universal language of humankind. No matter where we are music is always there around us and that show's how important music is for us human beings. Without music, we don't have the way to express our feeling with, technically life will be dulled without any music. By saying that, we need to understand that music is one of the essential tools for children development and it also helps their brain function. Through music, children learn how to communicate their thoughts and their feelings. According to (Cecil–Fizdale 1991 in The Arts and Early Childhood) state that 'Children's ability and need to express feelings fully and freely with their bodies makes movement and dance a vital part of any educational program.' Young children love to sing, they love hearing their own voices by experimenting with different melody, tone, and rhythm. That's one of many ways younger children learn how to play. When a softer and soothing music is playing during the day, children tend to be more relaxed and quiet. Music is a primary experience for us human. This is why music should be the important subject to have in early childhood curriculum. Greata (2006) talk about the ideas of Edwin Gordon, a researcher in music education, tells us that: 'if a child is not stimulated in a particular area such as music, she will lose some of her natural potential in that ... One important discovery on the confidence level that is rather remarkable is that of all of the users, not a single one has chosen "least confident" when we asked than how confident a user will enjoy a recommendation from friends and family, showing that everyone has a fundamental amount of faith in proposals given by friends and family. • 11. Analysis Of Scott Joplin 's ' Maple Leaf Rag ' Scott Joplin was a composer and pianist of ragtime who was born in the late 1860s near the border of Texas. He learned to play the piano as a young adult and started to travel with his amazing talent while he was young. He is known as the king of ragtime during his generation. He is famous for writing 44 ragtime pieces during his lifetime. He wrote one ballet and two operas as well, and one of his pieces called "Maple Leaf Rag", eventually was one of the most well–known ragtime pieces of the time. Joplin moved to Missouri to teach piano. Julius Weiss tutored Scott Joplin when he was a young boy. Joplin began to be introduced to classical and folk music from her. He taught several people like Arthur Marshall and Brun Campell to compose ragtime music there. He eventually died later in his life in the city of New York in 1917 at the age of 49. In Scott Joplin's ragtime pieced "Maple Leaf Rag", it is compiled with several melodic motives that have small pieces of sounds repeated to play a rhythm. About every six seconds there is a "swung note" that is played in a long. Joplin likes to include a lot of syncopation into his piece as well during "Maple Leaf Rag". Syncopation is the variety of beats that are unexpected in a musical piece. The sounds that are repeated happen in repetition. Joplin's melody is repeated by a strand of notes, and his music is played at a fast pace rhythm because of this. He repeated the same rhythmic pattern again in his song during the ... Blues Vs Ragtime Essay Jazz is a uniquely American style of music that developed in the early twentieth century, first emerged in the black cultures of New Orleans, a place with great ethnic diversity and blending backgrounds. This made it possible for different musical styles and techniques to fuse, giving rise to the birth of jazz and since grew in popularity and influence in today's music industry, evolved into many contrasting subgenres including smooth jazz, bebop, fusion and free jazz to name a few. Jazz has been known by its two main characteristics, namely, improvisation and swing feeling that will make people feel like moving and dancing. The first apparent difference is how the blues is primarily a vocal music, earliest form being singing and hand clapping (voice and percussion) and are highly improvisational. It was simpler, with simple chord progressions as compared to ragtime which has complex chord structure. Blues, which can be sung freely by one person without strict rhythm, thus always enjoyed an advantage over ragtime. Ragtime, on the other hand is tuneful, but primarily utilized highly syncopated rhythm. The harmonies change every few beats, more march like and making it closer to "art music," less catchy and more difficult to execute. Moreover, ragtime is polyrhythm, that is multiple rhythms of different meter occurring at the same time; has multi–sectional form of AABBCCDD; rhythmic polarity between treble and bass. Also, in ragtime, improvisation is not relevant as in blues because ragtime pieces were conceived as pieces capable of standing alone. As such, embellishments and improvisation were superfluous and not usually allowed. Despite all the differences, ragtime and blues are similar in their backgrounds; they both were originated from African–American music. Also, they involved some piano playing, which then produced one stepchild, boogie woogie piano. Slower ragtime sounded a lot like blues, and certain rags as 'slow drags' illustrates the similarities between the two art ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the three minute portion of this piece it contains an introduction that has a duration of around 8 seconds. After the introduction it has three sections. 2.) Do any sections repeat? • 14. Rap Music And Its Effects On The Lives Of Those Who... Music plays a immense part in the lives of those who experience it. It has the power to influence behaviors and moods and even important decisions one makes in life. A device with that amount of power must have very meticulous monitoring. Choosing between more uplifting music and more degrading music can be difficult surprisingly, simply because a lot of adults like rap and music categories like that that contain a lot of degrading messages. Positive, uplifting music is a much better choice for overall well being than negatively influenced music. Negatively influenced lyrics in music do nothing but influence activities that degrade one 's health. Pro–drug songs that influence and welcome the consumption of alcohol and drugs, like rap and pop, encourage people to indulge in those kinds of activities, because they portray those activities as acceptable and tolerable. Rap music is a very popular thing in today's society, which means it has plenty of room to influence the consumption of drugs and alcohol. According to Tara Pope from the New York Times, "77 percent" of rap songs today "reference drugs or alcohol," which is a substantial number of songs. Then when teens are listening to music an average of "16 hours a week," one can bet that music definitely has to give those teens something. Pope also says that "music is a powerful social force that taps into an individual 's identity, memories, and mood." If that's the case, then music that glorifies the use of drugs and ... • 15. Rhythm And Meter Of Music Chapter 2 Summary Chapter two of the text focuses in on the rhythm and meter of music, or musical time. Rhythm can be defined as the movement of music, where meter organizes beat in music. Throughout the years composers have created rhythmic complexities to engage the listener with a different sensation when enjoying music by straying away from a monotone rhythm. Syncopation is the most common way composers achieve this goal. Syncopation is defined as the "deliberate upsetting of the normal pattern of accents" (Rhythm & Meter). In other words, the accent is displaced from the strong beat in a measure to the offbeat, which falls in between stronger beats. In addition to syncopation, polyrhythm can produce a similar effect in throwing off regular accent patterns. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The novel contains many jazz element to show her understanding of Jazz music like melodies, breaks, cutting contest, soloists, composers, musical language and even improvisation which are very important elements in Jazz music. The first two elements of jazz that shows her understand of jazz music in the novel is the basic melody of Morrison's novel Jazz is when she introduces a girl named violet who attends a funeral of a dead girl, but just to cut her face of the corpse because she found out that her husband betrayed her (Morrison 11). (Morrison 220) However, as in jazz music, a key compound in regards to the success of jazz performance is the relationship and interaction between musicians and the audience. "As a music created in the moment, all jazz, the jam session and the cutting contest in particular, relies on the interplay between the musicians themselves and between the performance and their audience. Like Jazz, the novel too depends on the interplay between voices and listeners, narrator and reader, more so than any of Morrison other novels (Grandt 304). Morrison employs this techniques in several places throughout the novel. One of which is seen in the section leading Dorcas being shot by Joe, where her inner prologue is merged with the narrators account of the events of that night. As the point view shifts back and forth from the narrator to Dorcas, the events of the evening begin to build up, quickly layering on top of another, and leading to that final moment where Dorcas lay dying. We learned that they are based on conflict while exposing the character's needs / wants. In all honesty, I often struggle with what exactly is a beat; I understand the concept of it, it is more that I just struggle placing exactly when a beat happens. For this reason, I find it extremely helpful and interesting that there are some points in the script where (beat) is written. Regina George is not shown much empathy, in the script Cady does apologize but in the movie that was taken out. The timing was comedic because it very much took the "jab, jab, punch" method, as in the whole movie she's been beaten down and then at the end it was one final punch, or dare I say, hit. Finally, the incongruity of it is that things don't belong together must collide, this is a bit of a far fetch to also be applied. It seems that they have been working quite diligently over these past few years, as it has only been one a half years since the release of their previous album, Digital Renegade. Although many people did not like that album, I enjoyed it a lot, and I thought it had many standout tracks such as "Gnars Attacks", "NZT48", "Digital Renegade", and "Filth Friends Unite" (check out the music video). With New Demons, they have changed up their sound a lot, and it sounds quite different from Digital Renegade. I believe that New Demons is a progression from Digital Renegade, as it incorporates many more elements of electronic music, and the tracks seem much heavier and interesting. New Demons blends the mix of electronic music and metal music very well. Although ISS attempted to do that in prior albums, the electronic elements would often feel awkward and forced, and sound somewhat out of place. In this album, the integration of different electronic music such as dubstep, drum and bass, and even house music is amazing. In New Demons, the electronic elements feel like they are actually part of the music. As diverse as its musical background was, the audience was even more distinct; this genre of music requires a high degree of musicianship, appreciation of what jazz is, and recognition of its power to communicate feelings (Willoughby). Many artists and bands have risen over the years, and they have often transcended the sub–genres of jazz music. This is why I liked Miles Davis the best; his music (and its characteristics) have changed over the years with jazz. His early music featured lots of syncopation, which is the off beat rhythms that became popular during the Bebop era (Kaplan). This ability to create superb, engaging music with elements of syncopation that embody his emotions is why Davis is my favorite artist. His struggles with drug addiction resulted in sincere music that the listener can hear. Thus, the improvisation in his music ‒ notably on "Yesterdays" ‒ makes the songs melodic and intimate (Giddins). Just as Davis was able to vary his performance during his songs, his role in the alterations to the genre of jazz music is also a justification of why he is my favorite jazz artist. Listening to his works, I observed the notable swings ‒ the rhythm that makes jazz music "jazzy" ‒ during solo performances, but also combo jazz performances with other important jazz musicians (Willoughby). Although Davis's songs do not feature many words, I believe that his intricate music is much more enjoyable and methodical than nearly any musical contribution of our current ... Firstly, both funk and pop have somewhat similar instrumentation, purpose, structure and notation. Funk music includes 9th chords which is adding the 7th and the 9th notes to a triad and this is now a signature funk sound. Funk also has complex rhythms and grooves and incorporates instruments such as drums, horns, trumpets, vocals, guitar, bass and saxophones. One genre, in particular, has greatly influenced the world and still remains popular today. This renowned genre is jazz. Although jazz originated in the late 19th and early 20th century, the genre has continued to develop and influence other aspects of music. With its beginnings in African American communities, jazz features several distinguishing components and defining qualities. Along with jazz's many influences and unique features, the genre also includes a variety of leading musicians. The roots of jazz are often pinned to the African American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana. Because New Orleans was at the center of trade through its major sea and river port, music was able to develop through the numerous people who came to and from the area. As a result of this mixing of people, past music traditions also blended. Music traditions, such as slave songs and brass bands, contributed to a new creation. Slave songs, which were known for their spiritual and gospel sound, were sung by slaves who were working on plantations, railroads, fields, and more. In addition to the spiritual sound, slave songs also featured the call–and–response idea, in which a leader sang one line and the others sang it back. This call– and–response idea became a key element in the improvisation aspect of jazz. Moreover, brass bands also played a role in the creation of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

First, their origin was different. Even though they both had African influence as mentioned, ragtime was more strongly influenced by European music style, and blues was heavily African music style. According to Durk Sutro in his book Jazz for Dummies, "Ragtime was European–influenced, in the sense that it was composed, not improvised, and featured carefully crafted melodies and harmonies...ragtime could sound concisely European" (ch.5). Although European–influenced, there is some African influence such as rhythm and African banjo music as mentioned during the lecture. Ragtime rhythm was "the rhythms of the black dancers who used their heels to make drum sounds, or to that of the black church singers who could vary the rhythms of a Christian hymn so much that a white Christian could not even recognize it"(Tirro, pp.37). On the other hand, Blues were basically from work songs of African Americans slaves at the time. "It is a native American music, the product of the black man in this country, or, to put it more exactly the way I have come to think about it, blues could not exist if the African captives had not become American captives"(pp.17), said Jones and Baraka. I would indicate the tempo as vivace because the song sounds very lively. "The Piece of Resistance" also has periods of slight accelerando and slight ritardando. Cyntje's trombone had a relatively low pitch which greatly affected the tone color of the song. The dynamics of the piece was a combination of mezzo forte and forte. The dynamics kept changing due to the slight diminuendo of loudness during a portion of the song. In addition to the elements of music, musical concepts such melody, harmony, and texture are also important to "The Piece of Resistance." The song's melody was played in a smoothly, connected manner, which means it is best described as a legato. This smooth melody resulted in a consonance harmony in the piece. There is a distinct main melody played throughout the song played by the drums being accompanied by the other instruments. Let's take a look at two fantastic songs, The Beatles, Strawberry Fields Forever, and the other by Dave Brubeck, Unsquare Dance. In 1961 American Composer Dave Brubeck wrote a piece called Unsquare Dance. Unsquare Dance is a jazz piece in 7/4. The fact that it is in 7/4 is very strange, as this is an uncommon time signature. The hand clapping is always on the off beat, yet still accented, and the bass line is constantly on the beat. These layers of rhythm being played simultaneously create juxtaposition. The composition is credited to both John Lennon and Paul McCartney. There are arguments to support that Lennon is the soul composer, but this unconfirmed. This piece is classified as a psychedelic pop song. Songs of this genre used strange recording techniques such as playing the tape backwards, and using unusual instruments. Strawberry Fields Forever made use of these techniques, the end of the song is played in reverse and a sitar is used. This is a very typical song of that era and culture. Upon hearing the opening of Strawberry Fields Forever you will notice that it sounds very lethargic. There are many reasons for this. At the end of most phrases there are tied notes across the bar; therefore the listener is not hearing the first beat of that bar, which is the strongest beat in a bar, an example of this is bar 5. It is interesting to note that some in phrases, the melody line drops in pitch on the last note, almost like a sigh. Long droning notes in the background add to the lazy feel. It is defined as "a regular, recurrent pulsation that divides music into equal units of time" 1. In marching or rock music, the beat can be easily felt and is powerful. It can happen every quarter of a second; and even up to every one and a half seconds. Beats are important to composers because they, "form the background against which the composer places notes of varying lengths"1. Without a beat, all notes could not be measured, because beats are used as a basic unit of time. Rhythm is how music flows through time. Specifically, rhythm is defined as, "the particular arrangement of note lengths in a piece of music"1. An interesting aspect of rhythm is that it has the ability to flow freely, and it can match the beat at some time or not at all. Rhythm of a melody is important to a music piece, because it is what gives the music personality. Meter is defined as, "the organization of beats into regular groups"1. A lot of times, people speaking a second language will pronounce things a little differently than native speakers, or they will talk at a different rhythm. Languages have their own pace, places where you expect people to pause or speed up or articulate more clearly. We call this part of language an accent. People speaking a secondary language may have a foreign accent, while those speaking a native tongue have a local accent. Music is a lot like this. Musical rhythms tend to have natural accents, emphases on certain notes within a meter. Just like fitting in with a new culture requires learning their accent, accents are essential to understand musical conversation. Metric Accents Accents in music can appear in a few basic forms. Let 's start with the simplest. In many languages, parts of speech contain natural accents. In Spanish for example, the last syllable is naturally emphasized in most words. Music is the same in that there are natural accents within every score. Every musical composition is divided into measures, units of a set number of beats, and certain beats naturally carry more emphasis than others. The most important is the downbeat, the first beat of a measure. The downbeat is always naturally accented, so there is no need to provide an accent mark over it. This city served as a key seaport in the U.S. allowing for goods to be imported and exported. The purpose of this city was not only strategic to the growth of the country, but also allowed for the incredible mixing of cultures, customs, and traditions that led to the creation of one of our nations most cherished genres of music: jazz. Each beat in the measure is either spoken as numbers or specific syllables, and the subdivisions are either specified with distinct different syllables (e.g. the third and fifth one) or not as precisely defined (e.g. the forth one). The second group focuses on the duration of the notes, as seen in the last 3 examples. The sixth example assigns a specific syllabus to a rhythmic value, while the seventh is a little more vague on that, while it has a better ability to emphasize strong beats as the quarter note gets the "ta" and "ti" lies on accented moments most of the time. The last one which uses well–known words makes use of the natural speech rhythm to perform the job of the syllables in the sixth and seventh example. The examples which emphasized note value still operate in the same way as simple meter when it comes to compound meter, but the others show more variations in thoughts. The first example counts the subdivisions as the basic unit. In this case, instead of thinking in meter, it acts more like the "ti–ri–ti–ri" method which focuses on the duration of the notes. The ones which still focuses on the meter (2,3,4,5,8,9) still make use of the syllables to subdivide the beat. Example 2 and 4 specifies each subdivision up to the sixteenth–note level, while others are not as precise. For examples 6, only the beat is spoken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Essay on Bossa Nova, the Misunderstood Brett Dorman World Music Prof. Searles Bossa Nova: The Misunderstood " Tall and tan and young and lovely, The girl from Ipanena goes walking and, When she passes each one she passes goes, ‘Ahh.' " These are the first lyrics of, probably, one of the most famous bossa nova songs sung by Frank Sinatra. The melody of the song is as smooth as the singer, the rhythm is laid back, and the lyrics are simple. Unfortunately, Frank Sinatra's portrayal of this Bossa Nova classic is detrimental to the music's image. The Bossa Nova should not just be considered lounge music, for it is much more than that. The Bosa Nova is a style of Latin music that has subtle complexities and deserves much more credit than is given; once people have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bataria has three primary instruments, the surdoo, agogo, and tambourine. The surdo is a membranophone that acts as a bass drum and normally comes in three different sizes that vary in pitch. These instruments are the heart of the entire ensemble. The tambourine is also a membranophone that is normally played with one stick while the hand that holds the drum is used to mute which helps accentuate some beats and muffle others. The agogo acts as the melodic instrument even though there are only two notes that can be played. The agogo is an idiophone that resembles two different sized cow bells attached together. Samba is normally played at a fast tempo and contains many overlapping complicated rhythms accentuate the first note while playing in duple meter. Also, a lot of the time you will hear an emphasis on threes while playing in duple (you will either hear this through accents or triplets). When listening, we can hear the syncopation between the different rhythms due to the polyrhythm of the music. One might ask how samba then relates to the Bossa Nova if the music itself is fast, loud, and has an emphasis on percussion and not so much melody or lyrics. The structure of the Bossa Nova is pretty much identical to that of samba except much more laid back; it is "samba broken down to its bare essentials" (The Brazilian Sound, 55). However, the structure is not the only aspect of samba that relates to the bossa nova, the melody is similar as well. The bossa nova ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Music Analysis: Lagniappe House Every night from 9pm until midnight Lagniappe House features live music performances of several styles from blues to countries music. Located in the Wynwood community, this outdoor restaurant is the perfect place to relax and share a good time. The stringed lights laced the entire backyard seating area and the palm trees portray Miami's essence. Moreover, there's a small quaint area with a little bar, couches, and chairs where the live music happens. Last thursday night I had the opportunity to go with my family and get out of the daily routine. While enjoying the house special chocolate dessert, Lagniappe House presented " The Deltaz" a group of brothers with a Mississippi Delta Blues influence, combining the harmony of American Folk music, and the rumble retro rock. Among their instrumentation there was an electric guitar, a bass guitar, a harmonica, drums, a solo voice and two voices in the chorus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The polyrhythmic feature kept people glad and cheerful. Likewise, the melody of the song was complex, somehow long, it had little repetition, and it was rhythmically delivered. This first song was organized in a verse/chorus form with some informal style. Perhaps their preference for live improvisation conveys the idea of an untrained musical formation. However the harmony was very consonant and its dynamics very loud, yet soft at the end of the musical piece. During the interlude, the texture of the song changed from melody with accompaniment to competing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Syncopation Of Music In The Sting Upon listening to the melody, it is one that sound familiar and one I've heard before. I have heard this popular melody in the movie "The Sting", while I also feel that it resembles a sample used in the theme song of Charlie Brown. Syncopation is defined as a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm. It can also be described as the placement of rhythmic stresses or accents where they wouldn't normally occur. Syncopation is something that is often prevalent in jazz music, and "The Entertainer" is no exception and is one of the most popular pieces of music in the history of the genre. The Entertainer is written in 2/4, 2 beats per measure, with the 1st beat being strong and the 2nd detonating an upbeat, while syncopation remains ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Ragtime Vs. The Blues ¬Ragtime vs. The Blues In the city of New Orleans emerged one of the most influential music genres in U.S. history. At the time, New Orleans was known for being a "melting pot" of people or rather, a region where people from all over the world came together in one place. This city served as a key seaport in the U.S. allowing for goods to be imported and exported. The purpose of this city was not only strategic to the growth of the country, but also, the atmosphere allowed for the incredible mixing of cultures, customs, and traditions that led to the creation of one of our nations most cherished genres of music: jazz. Jazz emerged towards the beginning of the 20th century, but didn 't just spring up out of nowhere. Instead, it was a creation that developed from popular music styles of the 19th century that were blended and combined to entertain not only the social dancers, but also, the nation as a whole. The two main music styles that jazz evolved from were ragtime and the blues. Both ragtime and the blues had their beginnings in African–American communities. While both of these music styles strongly contributed to the creation of jazz and have a lot of similarities, they do have their differences. These differences lie within their origins, their instruments, the elements of the music styles and how these elements influenced jazz, and their artists and composers. First of all, ragtime and the blues are similar in that they both originated in the United States. While the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the most significant features in soul music is "call and response". Briefly, this feature could be described as the communicating between musicians in a strong and violent way: one 'calls' and one 'responses'. James Brown's band embodies this characteristic very well. The band combines the psychotic falsetto and metallic guitar being strummed in response. The musicians on different places responds to each other throughout the play. As for the guitar, they interact by playing not at the same time assisting each other but strumming one responding to each other shouting out the rhythms. Pulsing polyrhythm was then created by the horn and the fractured bass lines made the music noisy and shocking. Funk music is also the successor to the soul music of the 1960s. The new keyboards produce a dual role as rhythm to lead instrument which is no longer confined to the traditional rhythmic patterns such as drums and bass. Funk music style could be created by 'pulse with percussive strength' and 'melodic lines', which are basic melodies of the R&B and soul tune. Melodic instruments and rhythm instruments such as guitar could create this kind of effect. Beats based on the one and three counts in the four–four time were called downbeats. Downbeats were particularly emphasized on funk music. Referring to James Brown's guitarists Jimmy Nolen and Cheese ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
