North
The north is stereotyped to be poorer
and an area of poverty. They also are
represented as chavs and have quite
a violent culture, with a lot of knife
crime. There is also a stereotype of
industry in the north, as in the past a
lot of industrial work, such as coal
mining. The violent stereotype and
the poverty is represented by this
documentary, on the YouTube
channel “VICE”, about a debt
collector based in Liverpool.

South
The south is stereotyped to be upperclass and live a posh lifestyle, with
lots of luxuries available to them.
There is also the stereotype where
everyone is well-educated and
intellectual. The stereotypes can be
found in TV shows such as Made In
Chelsea.
3. Rural/Urban
Rural
Urban
People who live in rural areas are
stereotyped as people who live “the
simple life” and “off the land” which
generally means they are farmers.
They do not have all the luxuries of
urban life but have simple things.
Emmerdale is an example of a TV
show which supports stereotypes of
rural people.
People who live in urban areas are
stereotyped as city dwellers and living in
the modern age. They have a lot of
luxuries in their life, but can also be
stereotyped as ignorant and impolite.
4. Counties
There are many different stereotypes within all of the counties.
Kent, for example, is stereotyped as quite posh and upper class
and the “soft south”. It is known as the garden of England so can
also be stereotyped as a rural area where there are lots of
farmers.
Essex has the stereotypes of dumb but having a lot of luxuries at
their dispense, shown in The Only Way is Essex.
5. Cities
The various cities around England have different stereotypes.
Manchester, represented in shows such as Shameless, is shown
as an area of increased poverty and a lot of knife crime, and that
a lot of people live in council flats and estates.
6. Brighton
Brighton is a city that is very heavily stereotyped. The main
stereotype of Brighton is that is it the gay capital of England. It is
also seen as a place for students to go to as there is a lot of
nightlife and places for the students to go.
