Alcohol is any organic compound containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a carbon atom in an alkyl group. The two most common forms of alcohol in beer are ethanol, which is safe, and methanol, which is dangerous. Beer is made from water, malt, hops, and yeast through a grain mash process, while wine and brandy are made from mashed grapes and whiskey from a grain blend. Alcohol production and consumption impact the environment through increased waste, depletion of resources during production and transportation, and increased water usage. Alcohol also influences human culture through social events, increased pregnancies, recreational use, and as a way to cope with stress.
2. CHEMISTRY
• Alcohol is any organic compound in which a hydroxyl group (-OH) is
bound to a carbon of an alkyl group. Alcohols may be considered as
an organic derivatives of water.
• Two most common forms of beer:
Ethanol- CH3CH2OH ( Safe )
Methanol- CH3OH (Dangerous)
3. Alcohol Ingredients
• The basic ingredients of beer are water,
malt, hops, and yeast
• Beer-Grain mash
• Wine & Brandy- Mashed Grapes
• Whiskey- Grain blend
• Vodka-Fermented Grain
4. Distribution of Alcohol
• The three tier system
• Tier 1- manufacturer/ brewery
• Tier 2- wholesaler/ distributor
• Tier 3-retailers
• The consumer
5. Effects on the Environment
• Increase amount of waste ( Plastic bottles
and cans)
• Production and Transportation deplete
the earth’s resources and energy.
• Alcohol consumption leads to more
frequent urination which leads to more
water usage via the toilet.
• Pollution on the environment
6. Influence on Human Culture
• Parties
• Increased Pregnancies
• Recreational use
• Help cope with stress,depression,sadness
and pain
