Today, Sadigh Gallery takes a closer look at the art of Ancient Greece, from its earliest days to what is commonly
known as the Orientalizing Period.
The truth of the matter is, anything from Ancient Greece does not seem as old as its age suggests. From the epic
tales of its heroes to the teachings of its most famed philosophers to some of the earliest forms of complex
mathematics from the civilization’s greatest minds, Ancient Greece can still be found all around the world today.
Greek culture can be seen in films and learned in school. Its sculptures can be found in museums worldwide. Such
is its enduring legacy.
In the past, what would be the ancient Greeks were scattered around the Mediterranean, in several autonomous
regions known as city-states. But they were united. They interacted in competition and art, Sadigh Gallery explains.
However, after the fall of the Mycenaean citadels at the end of the Bronze Age, Ancient Greece entered what was
known as a “Dark Age.” The period lasted from 1100 to 800 B.C.E. Many Ancient Greek accomplishments such as
metalworking and construction were lost in this period.
Ancient Greeks also told stories through vase art, which was the trend in the Geometric Period that lasted from 800-
700 B.C.E. Another excellent example of art during this period was the Dipylon Amphora, art that showcased
geometric patterns and human silhouettes and was thought to be a record of Greek stories. Historians and experts
have examined these artifacts throughout the centuries. They were astounded by the detail of the art, further fueled
by the mystery of the characters depicted in them.
During the Orientalizing Period, which lasted from 700-600 B.C.E., Sadigh Gallery notes that Ancient Greek artists
crafted even more detailed illustrations, which would later become some of the earliest forms of architectural
decoration in the Iron Age of Greece. In a particular artwork, people can see one of the earliest depictions of the
severed Medusa head. At this point, many of the known heroes and villains of Ancient Greece were given much
more detailed features such as muscles, distinctive facial elements, and even identifiable equipment.
