2. What is MPEG?
MPEG stands for the Motion Picture Experts
Group,which is part of the International
Organization for Standardization(ISO) and
International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC).
However, MPEG is charged with creating and
publishing standards for various technology.

3. MPEG family
­ MPEG 1: video codec used for Video CDs
­ MPEG 2: used on DVDs and in most digital
video broadcasting
­ MPEG 4: used for Internet and broadcast
­ MPEG 7: describing the multimedia content
that supports degree of interpretation
­ MPEG 21: defining a normative open framework
for multimedia delivery

4. MPEG­1
mpeg­1 is a video codec used for Video CDs, and
also sometimes for online video. The quality is
roughly comparable to that of VHS. Almost every
computer in the world can play this codec, and
very few DVD players do not support it.

5. MPEG­2
mpeg­2 is used on DVDs and in most digital
video broadcasting and cable distribution
systems. When used on a standard DVD, it offers
good picture quality and supports widescreen.
The MPEG­2 format can be used on HD­DVD and
Blu­ray discs.

6. MPEG­4
mpeg­4 is an MPEG standard that can be used for
Internet, broadcast, and on storage media,
MPEG­4 offers improved quality relative to
MPEG­2.MPEG­4 has recently been adopted into a
number of company products, for example, the
iPod, Mac OS X, as well as HD DVD and Blu­ray
discs. Like MPEG­2, it supports both
progressive scan and interlaced video.

7. MPEG­7
mpeg­7, formally named "Multimedia Content
Description Interface", is a standard for
describing the multimedia content data that
supports some degree of interpretation of the
information meaning, which can be passed onto,
or accessed by, a device or a computer code.
MPEG­7 is not aimed at any one application in
particular; rather, the elements that MPEG­7
standardizes support as broad a range of
applications as possible.

8. MPEG­21
mpeg­21 aims at defining a normative open
framework for multimedia delivery and
consumption for use by all the players in the
delivery and consumption chain. This open
framework will provide content creators,
producers, distributors and service providers
with equal opportunities in the MPEG­21 enabled
open market. This will also be to the benefit
of the content consumer providing them access
to a large variety of content in an
interoperable manner
