The document discusses the five themes of geography: location, place, region, movement, and human-environment interaction. It provides examples for each theme. Location is defined using absolute (latitude and longitude) and relative terms. Place looks at physical (climate, landscape) and human (culture, language) characteristics. Region divides the world into meaningful areas based on shared traits. Movement refers to the flow of people, goods, and ideas. Human-environment interaction considers how humans impact and are impacted by their surroundings.
2. We use the them of Location to answer the question “Where am I?” The question can be answered in one of two ways: with your RELATIVE Location or your ABSOLUTE Location. Someone giving you your Absolute Location would sound like this : Absolute Location always uses LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE! Relative location describes Where something is in “relation” to something else Location! Location! Location! Latitude lines go from left to right on a map and measure distance North or South of the EQUATOR. For Example: “The School is down the street from the movie theatre.” Longitude lines go from top to bottom on a map and measure distance East or West of the PRIME MERIDIAN This describes the location of the school in relation to the theatre. You are currently at 35 Degrees North Latitude, 78 degrees west Longitude
3. We could use the theme of Place to answer the question “What is N.C. Like?” Place can be broken down into two categories: Physical Characteristics Natural features such as: physical setting, local plant and animal life, and weather. Physical characteristics often determine where people settle. Human Characteristics Features of the people living in an area such as: Language, culture, and diversity. Place Bad place to live. Good Place to Live
4. You can’t easily study the whole world as one piece. Geographer’s break the world into smaller pieces called regions Each region has shared characteristics that set it apart. These characteristics can include physical setting, language, climate, or even religion…it all depends on what your studying about the area. Region For example, NC is in the SOUTHERN REGION of the United States North Carolina can be broken up into the regions: Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, and Tidewater.
5. Movement refers to not only the movement of people, but also to the movement of goods and ideas. People move for many different reasons. The movement of people often results in the trade of goods over long distances. As people move from place to place their culture and ideas travel with them. Movement The “silk road” is a good example of people moving goods over long distances. In modern times, the internet makes the movement of ideas and information almost instantaneous.
6. Human-Environment interaction deals with the way we humans interact with the environment. Sometimes the environment decides to interact with us. Human-Environment Interaction Humans can interact with the environment: OR Positively Negatively
