A presentation on the current uses of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality, as well as what Extended Reality may look like next year. This is the first in a series of talks on disruptive technologies that Dragon Army will be producing in 2019.

The following slides are from a presentation I gave at Dragon
Army’s first breakfast and learn to a small group of Dragon Army
friends. The topic was disruptive technology, particularly VR, AR,
MR, etc (I referred to them as “Disruptive Realities”), that we’ll be
seeing more of in 2019. Most of the slides are video samples of
different examples I’ve found around the internet. If you find
yourself browsing this deck and have questions about what I may
have noted in each example, then please hit me up.
The presentation is in 4 parts:
1) Technology trends
2) VR examples
3) AR & MR examples
4) Some ideas I think make for good extended reality (XR) brand
initiatives

Key Takeaways:
• Virtual (VR), Augmented (AR) and Mixed (MR) Realities are increasingly
being referred to as one concept labeled “Extended Reality” (XR) to show
that they are really just different areas of the same continuum.
• Currently VR and AR/MR are on different paths that seem to intertwine.
One day they will all just be variations of the same technology.
• Good uses of XR for brands with current technology seem to have some
things in common:
- Simple for the user
- Useful for the user, enough to make them want to take their phone out of
the pocket
- Augment, of extend the brand messaging vs simply gratuitous visuals.

Today I want to talk about…
The technology trends in the AR, MR, VR space
We’ll look at a few examples on things happening in VR
Then I’ll spend more time in AR & MR since I think that is where we’ll see more branding & marketing impact in 2019
And finally I’ll talk through some ideas/examples of how reality can be extended in a meaningful way today
Google's Staff Hardware Engineer Carlin Vieri said humans are capable of seeing 9,600 x 9,000 pixels per eye, and that our field of view can reach roughly 160 degrees horizontally and 150 degrees vertically.
To bridge that gap, Google researchers have implemented a technique called "foveated rendering." It processes whatever image the user is looking at in high resolution, and allows objects in a viewer's peripheral vision to lose focus. One benefit of this technique is that it shrinks the amount of data processing placed on the GPU.
