1. Courage
Courage is one of the most important characteristics a person can have!
Courage and the abilitlity to act with certainty in uncertain times, and it is what
separate’s the leaders from the people who just have opinions.
You have to have the courage to “carry the flag into battle!” And on many occasions
I have had to do exactly this. Weather it be facing an angry board member wanting
answers, facing bankers who at times may be less understanding than you’d like or
rolling out a new marketing initiative and rallying your troops for support.
When you demonstrate this courage people will follow you anywhere. My father
always said be a leader of good vs. a follower of evil. That simple philosophy has
served me well.
Peter Druker one stated, “If you see a successful business someone made a
courageous decision. “
You must ask yourself, are you willing to pay the price and deal with the
consequences of your decision – if you are, you demonstrate courage. Please
recognize the difference between honest courage and foolhardy action!
Three tips on courage
1. Breath, stay calm and relax -but act with purpose and urgency – you must act
with a clear head.
2. Assess the landscape, weather it be market, financial or possibly political.
3. Move with conviction – at the point of action there is only “do” not “try.”
