BTV is back—and this time, you can see it. This is the public start of something very big at Brown
University, and this is only phase one. In this newsletter, I will outline the current state of Brown TV with
a recap of recent significant and exciting developments.
Station
Status: Superb
Finance: BTV’s Financial Chair, Carmen Valdivia ’10, is building a financial team based around the
following areas: Fundraising, Grantwriting, Donations, Advertising. Starting from square one, this team
will have the goal of raising $2000 by May 1. Ms. Valdivia has already outlined and researched several
innovative fundraising ideas, some of which should be expected to be seen on campus in the next view
months.
Publicity: BTV’s Pilot Competition has been a tremendous success so far, with over 15 television pilots
submitted. In addition to this, the pilot competition has tangible publicity results, as we have received a
wealth of emails requesting information on BrownTV. Also, BTV recruited Artist and Marketing Specialist
Farah Shaer ’11, who will be designing material and assisting the Publicity Chair in running campaigns.
Art and Identity: Further advancements in logo conceptualization have been made. Also, BTV recruited
Artist and Marketing Specialist Farah Shaer ’11, who will work with Art and Identity Director, RISD
Student Miguel Llorente ’11, to finalize the logo in the next month and establish the BTV Image.
Recruitment: As of February 1, BTV has 27 Staff members, with two additions in the month of January.
Each was in the Development department of Production: Amanda Kim ’12 and Hallie Cantor ’11. We are
expecting up to 5 new staff members in the next two weeks. This is the largest staff BTV has had since
(according to our knowledge) the early 90s.
Event Coordination: BTV has added a new position, Event Coordinator, which will be assumed by former
University Outreach Coordinator Lilia Royanova ’11, who has a long history of party planning with
French House and a history of Event Coordination with Brown University Simulation of the United
Nations (BUSUN).
Website: On February 2, the Browntv.org website was launched, presenting information about the
Station and displaying a large quantity of the resources we offer. It is fully equipped with a blog and
video playing capability, which will be massively updated in a few months, when BTV enters stage two of
its launch project. We owe so much to our wonderful webmaster Daniela Postigo ’10.

Programming:
Status: Superb
On February 2, Brown TV had a soft launch at 7pm, displaying its abilities to broadcast live and to air
quality programming with its scheduling software. February will have a focus on royalty free
programming, with special BTV Retro days. We will air Monday through Thursday, 7‐10pm. In March, we
hope to shift focus to more BTV Retro, and by April we hope to show more Campus Now! and Student
Productions. This is the first time BTV has aired student programming in over two years.
There are four areas of Campus Programming: Campus NOW! (essentially video of things you see on
Morning Mail), Student Production, BTV Retro (Old BTV Footage), and Open Video. Programming is
currently retrieving Open Video material and digitizing BTV Retro material. We currently have over 20
hours of Programming ready to be shown. The overwhelming majority of this fantastic work was done
by Calvin Main ’12, David Walker ’11, Jonathan Lee ’11, Will Vinci ’11, and Adrian Randall ’11.
Production:
Status: Superb
University Outreach: Our University Outreach Coordinators have done a tremendous job. Over the break
they contacted every student organization, pitching ideas for collaboration and trying to accrue new
footage. We are currently working with 23 student organizations and 10 individuals, trying to properly
allocate our resources to best help them achieve their goals. This great turnout was thanks to Joseph
Mellano ’12, Jenna Kay‐Kauderer, and Lilia Royanova ‘11—all led by Executive Producer David Notis.
Filmmakers Resource Center: The Filmmakers Resource Center completed the first Draft of the BTV
Production Packet, which serves as a comprehensive guide to production style and How‐To’s involving
the serial, documentary, and narrative style, among many other things. They have also researched a
wealth of online and local resources for producers, and continue to build this arsenal of information.

Development: BTV has added a Development department, overseen by the Executive Producer. When a
University Outreach Coordinator is working with an organization to form a project, they will assign an
available Production Development Liaison to an organization or individuals particular project. They will
be involved in actual production, planning, editing, etc.—essentially in any capacity that the Producer of
the project calls for. Two new members to this department are Hallie Cantor ’11 and Amanda Kim ’12.

Technical Team: Technical Director Joe Larios ’10 and his team purchased a boom pole and are planning
to purchase a tripod head. The Technical Team and other Videographers are setting up a schedule of
availability to record campus events. We are working on selling old, out of date equipment, and figuring
out the rest of the equipment in the studio. Tech Director Joe Larios has set up a rental system and is
pursuing rental software. Additionally, he and his team have logged the bulk of equipment available
from Brown TV now.
Other Information
In mid January, the Chatterocks collaborated with BTV by using BrownTV studio space and were able to
record their new album, illustrating the utility of proper studio space on campus and the willingness of
the University’s students to work with BrownTV.
Concluding Note
None of this would be possible without the continual effort of the BTV staff, every single one of them.
We all look forward to the days ahead, as we continue to set even higher goals for this historic
organization and serve the Brown University campus in a very positive, enthusiastic way.
