For the Observation:
You will go to a setting where we find sociology at work. You will observe that setting and take notes about what is happening, how a sociologist would 'see' it, and then how you are reacting to the event. You will write up your observation and apply sociological information and theory to what you have seen. Only after that can you add your emotions at the end. How would a sociologist look at the setting? What would they see ? What terms or ideas would they see applied ?

Housewife Interview
Project 1
February 22, 2015
I met with Sarah at her home in Mount Olive to discuss her
view on her place in society as a wife, mother and housewife.
We began by discussing how she met her husband. They met as
teenagers and dated for several years. Sarah and her boyfriend
had a child at seventeen. I asked her how this dynamic changed
her life. She stated that she had full support of her family as
well as her boyfriend. They continued their relationship and he
was an excellent father. I asked her when they decided to marry.
The couple married at age twenty-one and began their life as
family of three. Sarah spoke about how difficult it was once
they were living in their own home. They worked hard as a
couple and learned how to cope during the difficult times. I
asked Sarah about her decision to have more children. She
explained that her second child came as a total shock. However,
she waited ten years before completing her family with her third
daughter. I wanted to know what it was like for her to work full
time, raise three daughters, and be a loving wife. She explained
that her different roles in life came with challenges. However,
she focused on doing whatever was needed to avoid role strain
and role conflict. Whenever she was at her job, she focused on
the task at hand. When she put on the role of wife and mother,
she concentrated on doing her best for her family.
Sarah discussed how her faith helped her through the tough
times in life. She believes faith helped her cope with life’s
difficulties. I asked her had there been a situation that she relied
on her faith. Sarah talked about how devastated she was when
she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. If not for her
strong belief in her faith, she feels that she would have
succumbed to her condition. I asked her how she coped with her
family responsibilities at this time. She explained how her
5. daughters, husband and family were ever present to lend a hand
and give her the moral support she needed. By the grace of God,
she beat cancer and has been cancer free for seven years. I
asked her was she able to return to work after this ordeal. Sarah
was no longer able to return to work. She could not physically
do many everyday activities due to the problems the
chemotherapy caused her. She still feels that god has blessed
her despite the hardship.
After this ordeal, another life challenge happened. Her
mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Now her roles had
changed once more. She had to become caregiver for her
mother. The decision to become her mother’s caregiver was not
a difficult one. I asked her to explain why. Sarah began by
telling me what a wonderful mother she was and despite the
hardship, she was more than willing to care for her mother.
We began talking about issues in society. I wanted to know
how she felt about her place in society. Sarah replied that she
felt that she had always been a contributed to the betterment p
of people in society. She worked hard and paid her taxes. She
had raised three wonderful, educated daughters that would offer
their knowledge to society. She is a dutiful sister, mother, wife
and caregiver for her mother. I asked her about how her role as
grandmother had impacted the roles she had to deal with. Sarah
expressed that she was willing to help her daughter care for her
children. I asked her what she would do with her life when all
her children are no longer living with her. She replied “she
would enjoy the silence.” With that being said, she is satisfied
that her place in society is worthy of praise.
When I asked her what makes her special, she smiled and
replied, “I am a child of god and I have tried to live up to his
commandments. I have treated all people with upmost respect. I
asked her how she felt when she was not treated with respect.
Sarah said that she did not burden herself with the action of
others. Her main goal is to treat all people the way she wants to
be treated. I asked her if she has faced discrimination. Sarah
was among the first class to integrate the schools in this area. It
6. was a difficult transition, however she persevered because she
had been given a strong foundation from her teachers at her
segregated school. I asked her how she felt years after
integration. Sarah feels in some ways it has opened doors to
equal education but in so many areas integration has harmed
certain segments of society. She stated that her premise was for
equal education however equal treatment was not always
achieved.
I ask Sarah about her involvement in community affairs. She
stated that she was involved in church activities. She visited the
sick and shut-in as well as visited the elderly in nursing
facilities. I asked did she work or volunteer in the school
system. She substituted for several years but her health issue
made it hard to continue. She also worked for a time as a 4H
teacher. I asked Sarah how she felt about being a housewife
after working outside the home for so many years. She said she
did miss working at times but she understands that her health is
more important.
I asked Sarah what was her hopes for society. She dreams of
a time when all are treated equal. She has hope that society will
learn from its mistake and build a better world for her
grandchildren as well as all children. Finally I asked her if she
could have three wishes for society, what it would be. She
wishes for peace among the different religious groups. Her
hopes are that we all can learn to live in harmony. Secondly,
she wishes that all children can have a quality education. She
understands that with an education, lives can be transformed.
Society will prosper if young people can realize their hopes and
dreams. Lastly, she wishes that the world could return to a time
when the elderly were loved and treated with respect. Sarah
acknowledges that we as humans we will all travel that road one
day. She believes that the wisdom elderly have needs to be
shared with the young.
I asked her how she felt about her on mortality. She does not
fear death. For one reason is that death is certain and if you live
a Godly life you will be satisfied when you time on earth is
7. over. She wants to be remembered for the good she during her
life time.
I enjoyed my time interviewing Sarah and seeing how she
handled the trials and tribulations in her life. Despite all she has
gone through, she seems to be a loving individual. She believes
that our book of life was written at birth and we need to
navigate it to the best of our ability. Interviewing Sarah from a
sociological view was very enlightening. I have learned that we
all want to be a part of society and contribute to the best of our
ability.
