The Cognitive Science Building Map Problems: -after speaking to a few cogsci people about our project they replied: “There's a map?” -this map is located to the right of Nitz's lab and the main way to come upon it is the steps which are kitty corner to Peterson Hall. So unless you are coming from that direction, you will miss it.
Here is the layout of the map. Colors, room numbers and 2-dimensional satellite representations are all you have to work off. This is especially frustrating if the room you are looking for is not on the second level.
Here is their solution to that very problem. So now you have gone from: -Locating where you are on the map -visually searching for the location you wish to go to -then moving from that representation to this one that “helps” you understand the crazy layout that is the CogSci building. At this point most people I imagine wait for someone to walk by and ask them instead about the location of a room. As a member of Nitz's lab, often in proximity to this map, I have seen this happen on many occasions.
The color coding I feel is probably the only good aspect of this map, as it helps to narrow down your visual search.
This one is my favorite. Honestly, I have no idea what is going on. There is soo much text, and unless on my spare time one day I decide to analyze this map, I will just run towards the nearest door in case of emergency.
This directory is located inside the building. There is no map near it, in fact, the map is located on nearly the opposite side of the building. There is also no directory near the map. Very helpful indeed.
This is what I consider the main facade of the building. But technically it isn't. The class rooms are hidden behind those ugly bars. When you approach, the outside classrooms are not even beginning in numerical order, no, those 001,002 are inside the building. Worst facade ever too, but we gotta work with what we have and make it navagation-aly accessible !
This is the main entrance of the department, on what I would consider the side of the building. There is no map to be found at the entrance. why? Intuitively you would think there would be right?
http://landtrustgis.org/technology/advanced/design link to a cartography business: Proposed initial steps to take: -more pics; walk the building (more notes) -draw map by memory -analyze map more to find problems -contextual inquiry : -watch as people navigate the building, it will be interesting to see the level of familiarity and how that translates in navigation. -ask staff, cog students, etc, questions (maybe ask for directions, and collect various responses) There is a lot of room here in question category and I think we can come up with a good set.
