7. What is a fatty liver?
Fatty Liver
A “fatty liver” is a condition in which extra or too
much fat is stored in the liver.
When more than 5% – 10% percent of the liver’s
weight is fat, then it is called a fatty liver
(steatosis)
Other names for fatty liver:
• Fatty Liver Disease
• Steatosis (mild form)
• Steatohepatitis (severe form)
8. What are the different types of fatty liver
disease?
Fatty Liver • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
• Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD)
• Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the
build up of extra fat in liver cells that is not
caused by alcohol.
• Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) is seen in
people who drinks a lot of alcohol.
9. What are the different types of fatty liver
disease?
Fatty Liver • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
• Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD)
• Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the
build up of extra fat in liver cells that is not
caused by alcohol.
• Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) is seen in
people who drinks a lot of alcohol.
Which one is more common?
In the world? NALFD - 25% prevalence
In the Philippines? NAFLD - 35% prevalence
More likely, NAFLD more common than AFLD
because of high prevalence of obesity and
diabetes which are risk factors. (DM- 57%
prevalent).

10. What are the different types of non-alcoholic
fatty liver disease? (NAFLD)
Fatty Liver • Simple fatty liver
This occurs when there is fat in the liver, but little
or no damage to liver cells.
Simple fatty liver does not typically develop into
a more severe medical condition.
• NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis)
A person who has developed NASH has
inflammation and damaged liver cells, as well as
fat in the liver. NASH can progress into a more
serious condition, such as liver cirrhosis, failure
and cancer.

fatty liver disease? (NAFLD)

12. What are the different types of non-alcoholic
fatty liver disease? (NAFLD)
Fatty Liver
13. What are the different types of fatty liver
disease? (Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease)
Fatty Liver Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD)
People who use alcohol excessively may develop
alcoholic fatty liver disease. As the liver breaks
down the excess alcohol, it can generate harmful
substances. This can result in liver cell damage
and inflammation.
This is the first stage of alcohol-related liver
disease, and if a person stops using alcohol, they
may be able to reverse it.
Alcoholic fatty liver disease can develop into
alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis.
14. What are the different types of fatty liver
disease? (Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease)
Fatty Liver
15. What are the courses of fatty liver diseases?
Fatty Liver
16. What are the courses of fatty liver diseases?
Fatty Liver
Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis is the most serious stage of liver
disease. It typically occurs when scar tissue
replaces healthy liver tissue. It can lead to liver
failure and liver cancer.
17. What are the courses of fatty liver diseases?
Fatty Liver

Liver failure
Liver cancer
18. What are the courses of fatty liver diseases?
Fatty Liver
Usually no symptoms in the early stage of fatty
liver disease.
As disease progresses, symptoms appear –
initially nonspecific and eventually, more specific
suggestive of liver disease:
•itchy skin
•bruising or bleeding
•Bloating of the abdomen
•jaundice, which is when a person’s skin and eyes
turn yellow
19. What are the causes and risk factors for fatty liver
disease?
Fatty Liver The cause of fatty liver disease is not entirely
clear. But the following are known risk factors:
• genetic
• overweight or obesity
• high blood pressure
• type 2 diabetes
• metabolic syndrome, which is a group of
medical conditions and characteristics linked
to obesity
20. What are the causes and risk factors for fatty liver
disease?
Fatty Liver
21. How to diagnose fatty liver disease?
Fatty Liver
Symptoms if there are. Usually NONE.
Diagnostic tests:
• Ultrasound (conventional / Fibroscan)
• Liver function tests (ALT / AST)
• Biopsy (needle)
22. How to diagnose fatty liver disease?
Fatty Liver
• Ultrasound
23. How to diagnose fatty liver disease?
Fatty Liver
• Fibroscan
24. What are the treatment for fatty liver disease?
Fatty Liver Lifestyle changes and prevention
Making lifestyle changes is essential in treating
fatty liver disease.
Lifestyle changes may include:
•abstaining from alcohol
•eating a balanced diet / eating in moderation
•doing regular exercise
•avoiding unnecessary medications
25. What are the preventive measures against fatty
liver disease?
Fatty Liver
Lifestyle changes and prevention
Making lifestyle changes is essential in preventing
fatty liver disease.
Lifestyle changes may include:
•abstaining from alcohol
•eating a balanced diet
•doing regular exercise
•avoiding unnecessary medications
26. Are supplements recommended for fatty liver
disease?
Fatty Liver
Supplements, popularly known as “liver
vitamins” have not been proven by good
scientific evidence to be effective in treating fatty
liver disease.
It only gives patients a false sense of security and
distracts their attention from doing what matters
(weight loss and lifestyle changes).
27. What is the prognosis of fatty liver disease?
Fatty Liver
Outlook
The most common risk factors for fatty liver
disease relate to obesity and overweight.
Taking steps to lose weight through diet and
exercise can reduce the risk of developing fatty
liver disease. This can also be a way to reverse
liver damage or to halt the progress of the
disease.
Once fatty liver disease has progressed further,
doctors find it more challenging to treat.

Summary
Take Away
30. Summary
Fatty Liver
NAFLD and alcoholic fatty liver disease occur
when fat builds up in the liver. This can cause the
liver to stop functioning correctly.
Fatty liver disease is often symptomless.
If the disease progresses and develops into
cirrhosis, a person may experience jaundice,
itching, and swelling.
31. Summary
Fatty Liver
The cause of fatty liver disease is unknown, but
certain health conditions may contribute to its
development.
Treatment is not straightforward, but a person
can help or prevent fatty liver disease by
maintaining a moderate weight, taking regular
exercise, and not using alcohol to excess.
