3. ITEM 1 [***] What do I do here with this?
During his two day visit to Canberra and Darwin,
the US president, Barack Obama, announced that
the USA will station 2500 US Marines near Darwin on
an Australian military base for six months of each
year. Obama was visiting Australia to mark the 60th
anniversary of the ANZUS Treaty of 1951. He also
stated that the USA will slowly withdraw its troops
from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and build a
stronger military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
This has been strongly welcomed by most Australian
politicians; however, this announcement has upset
some of Australia’s near northern neighbours.
