Annie Leibovitz is a famous American photographer born in Connecticut. She studied painting in college but became interested in photography. She began her career as a staff photographer at Rolling Stone magazine, where she helped define their style with her intimate celebrity photos. Leibovitz had a long relationship with writer Susan Sontag and acknowledged their romance after Sontag's death. She is a third-generation American whose great-grandparents were Jewish immigrants, from Central and Eastern Europe. Her father's parents had emigrated from Romania.1 Her mother, Marilyn Leibovitz, was a modern dance instructor of Estonian Jewish heritage; her father, Sam Leibovitz, was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force.
