SMART Goal Example
By January 1, 2019, design and implement a
new logistics approach for our slate roofing
products by carrying out clearly defined
processes and guidelines so employees and
managers have more confidence that their
deliveries will be on time.
Specific
What. Why. How.
A specific goal is written in
an easy to understand way
and clearly defines what it
is you are going to do to
achieve the goal you've set.
It is the what, why, and how
of your goal.
What?
Design and implement a new logistics approach for our
slate roofing products
Why?
So sales reps and managers have more confidence that
their deliveries will be on time.
How?
By carrying out clearly defined processes and
guidelines.
Measurable
How will you know you’re
successful?
Usually the goal serves as
the measure for itself. But
additionally there are
smaller, more short-term
measurements that are
built into the strategy you
make to accomplish the
goal.
Measure
In the example given above, the essential measurement for the goal
is whether or not you designed and implemented a new logistics
approach for your slate roofing products by January 1, 2019.
Attainable
Achievable but challenging
A SMART goal isn't
necessarily meant to
motivate you to set
records. But they should
stretch you so much that
you're challenged.
Attainable
As you carry out each step of your strategy you learn a
lot about what works and what doesn't. But you won't be
able to tell what works unless you closely monitor and
are driven by your strategy's results.
Results-Driven
Results not tasks
The key here is to choose
goals that have outcomes
that can be measured
instead of a list of tasks
that need to be carried out.
Results-Driven
The result you want with respect to the SMART goal
example is to have a new logistics approach for your slate
roofing products.
Time-Bound
Results not tasks
Goals need a sense of
urgency to motivate your
company to push itself
harder and harder. A
specific time frame allows
you to create that urgency
so that your results are
relevant to your business's
current performance.
Time-Bound
The time boundary in the SMART goal example is the
date January 1, 2019.
SMART Goals
Each SMART goal you create links with the next which
ultimately link to your business goals.
It helps to create clear communication across the
organization about the objectives and expectations of each
team.

How to set a SMART goal

  • 3. SMART Goal Example By January 1, 2019, design and implement a new logistics approach for our slate roofing products by carrying out clearly defined processes and guidelines so employees and managers have more confidence that their deliveries will be on time.
  • 4. Specific What. Why. How. A specific goal is written in an easy to understand way and clearly defines what it is you are going to do to achieve the goal you've set. It is the what, why, and how of your goal.
  • 5. What? Design and implement a new logistics approach for our slate roofing products
  • 6. Why? So sales reps and managers have more confidence that their deliveries will be on time.
  • 7. How? By carrying out clearly defined processes and guidelines.
  • 8. Measurable How will you know you’re successful? Usually the goal serves as the measure for itself. But additionally there are smaller, more short-term measurements that are built into the strategy you make to accomplish the goal.
  • 9. Measure In the example given above, the essential measurement for the goal is whether or not you designed and implemented a new logistics approach for your slate roofing products by January 1, 2019.
  • 10. Attainable Achievable but challenging A SMART goal isn't necessarily meant to motivate you to set records. But they should stretch you so much that you're challenged.
  • 11. Attainable As you carry out each step of your strategy you learn a lot about what works and what doesn't. But you won't be able to tell what works unless you closely monitor and are driven by your strategy's results.
  • 12. Results-Driven Results not tasks The key here is to choose goals that have outcomes that can be measured instead of a list of tasks that need to be carried out.
  • 13. Results-Driven The result you want with respect to the SMART goal example is to have a new logistics approach for your slate roofing products.
  • 14. Time-Bound Results not tasks Goals need a sense of urgency to motivate your company to push itself harder and harder. A specific time frame allows you to create that urgency so that your results are relevant to your business's current performance.
  • 15. Time-Bound The time boundary in the SMART goal example is the date January 1, 2019.
