2. Obama's focus is a job factory for
Americans
US president Barack Obama has said that he would
concentrate on creation of job opportunities for his countrymen
during his trip to India.
Mr Obama’s stand indicated that the president would not open
up jobs, but would expect India to make some forward
movement on the proposed $12-billion military and civilian
purchases. The purchases are expected to create or save about
50,000 to 60,000 jobs in the US
India and the US are likely to sign MoUs to deepen
cooperation in the field of health, education, agriculture and
clean energy.
3. UN ranks Norway as best place to live
The United Nations on Thursday named oil-rich Norway as the
country with the best quality of life, while Asia has made the
biggest strides in recent decades.
Norway -- with its 81.0 years of life expectancy and average
annual income of 58,810 dollars -- has now topped the Human
Development Index (HDI) for all but two years since 2001.
China, the second highest index achiever since 1970, has been
successful mainly because of income rather than health or
education, the report said.
4. China's per capita income increased 21-fold over four decades,
lifting hundreds of millions out of poverty. Yet its school
enrollment has dropped since 1970 and life expectancy has not
improved as much as other nations.
Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Ireland followed
at the top of the standings.
Zimbabwe came in last among the 169 nations ranked, behind
Mozambique, Burundi, Niger and Democratic Republic of
Congo.
5. India gets world's tallest statue at Shimla
India is scaling new heights. Just on the outskirts of this erstwhile
summer capital of the British raj, a giant 108 feet high idol of
Hanuman (the Monkey God) was unveiled at Jakhoo Hanuman
temple, overlooking the entire city
Bollywood star Abhishek Bachan said that the construction of the
statue was an indication that the Indian craftsmen had not lost
their sheen. He added that it was a momentous occasion to be
present at the unveiling of the statue constructed at a holy spot.
6. Dell moving BlackBerry employees to
smartphone
Dell Inc will shift thousands of its employees off Research in
Motion Ltd's BlackBerry and over to Dell's smartphones
Dell is also launching an effort to convince its business customers
to switch to the company's smartphone.
Dell's BlackBerry users will be shifted over to use the new Dell
Venue Pro, which runs on Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7
software and operates on the network of T-Mobile USA, the U.S.
arm of Deutsche Telekom AG .
7. China 2010 trade surplus to reach $180 bn
China's trade surplus for 2010 is likely to reach around $180
billion, smaller than the $196 billion in 2009, Vice Commerce
Minister Zhong Shan, said on Saturday.
Zhong's comments, made at a Caixin forum in Beijing, confirmed
the figure cited by China's Trade Minister Chen Deming
published on Thursday.
