Straight to the Source Sarah Goldberg (She/Her), Sourcing Engagement Lead at Objective Paradigm, owns the master-list of sourcing hacks. 2020 has thrown us some curveballs but we’ve learned a lot, and we’re still sourcing! Sarah has agreed to share what you need to fill your toolbox for the rest of the year. This means live training, take-home materials, and open Q&A. (Please enjoy this hilarious but totally unrelated GIF)gif-hacker The Plan Simple. Sarah is going to show you things you actually need to know when sourcing. No BS. What this is: Essential Useful Time-Saving tricks that will make your life and your job easier and more fun. Plaintext. What this isn’t: Fluff Clutter Pointless, waste-of-space tools and extensions that make you question what it is you’re really doing with your life and toss your laptop through the window. Yeah. Don’t do that, okay? Take a deep breath. Here’s a taste of the takeaways: Remote work survival kits How to look for people, not candidates X-ray searches & how URLs actually work How does data scraping add value, and how do you actually do it? Build your own boolean library with a free spreadsheet. Editing tools (yes, you need these) How do you validate your outreach? Chrome extensions (plus when to use each one and when not to) Useful templates for…ha. You have to join to find out. Keyboard shortcuts Last but not least, the one free tool Sarah cannot source without. Materials Required Your brain A pat on the back for committing to an incredibly valuable learning session that will fill your toolbox with tried and true sourcing hacks, tips, and tricks. We’ll do the rest.

Anyone who's worked on a web project has stumbled across the horror of "legacy content" that makes no sense, or is held together with duck tape and dreams. In this talk, we'll look at some noteworthy content disasters, learn to spot problem areas in the future, and remember to be kind: the disasters of the past were built be people just like us, working with constraints we may not understand.

"Decoupling" is hot in the content management world, but the hype threatens obscure the real reasons to separate your content management from your content delivery platforms. In this talk from Drupalcon 2018, the history of decoupling and the reasons it can make sense are combined with useful heuristics for planning your own project.

Public speaking is often referred to as a soft skill. However, your career, your job opportunities, promotion, and tenure (for professors) are intrinsically tied to being able to speak in public and persuade others of your ideas. Being able to "sell" your work, opinions, ideas, and points of view can be as important as being good at Math, Coding, and doing good science. Many tend to ignore this (at their peril). This talk will present ways to make your ideas, thoughts, and theses look appealing, engaging and engaging to others. While I am using PowerPoint, these practices and techniques will work equally well if you have PDF slides, Keynote presentations, or even (gasp!) Prezi... I will also cover slide preparation techniques, practical multimedia advice, and delivery how-tos (and not-tos). Bio: Joaquim Jorge heads the Graphics and Interaction Research Line at INESC-ID and is a Full Professor of Computer Science at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the School of Engineering of the University of Lisboa, Portugal, and is Editor-in-Chief of the Computers and Graphics Journal. He received Ph.D. and MSc degrees in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, in 1995 and a BSEE from IST in 1984. An organizer of 50+ scientific conferences, Jorge has preferred over 42 invited talks and public presentations. He is a Distinguished Speaker and Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and a Distinguished Visitor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He received the IFIP Silver Core in 2014 and is a Fellow of the Eurographics Association.

Releasing an open source project while maintaining a shipping product is hard! Different behaviors, attitudes and actions can help or hinder your cause; and they are not always obvious. The Blueflood distributed metrics engine was released as open source software by Rackspace in August 2012. In the succeeding months the team had to strike a manageable balance between the challenges of growing a community, being good open source stewards, and maintaining a shipping product for Rackspace. Find out what worked, what did not work, and the lessons that can be applied as you endeavor to take your project out into the open. In this presentation you will learn about strategies for releasing open source products, pitfalls to avoid, and the potential benefits of moving more of your development out in the open. We have also made a few realizations about the community growing up around metrics. It is still young, and there are problems that come with that youth. I'll talk about some things we can do to make a better software ecosystem.

Here are the slides of the talk I gave at Smalltalks2014 in November 2014, in Córdoba, Argentina. It covers the basics of why startups matter and what they actually are. Then show some opportunities and challenges about them and for Smalltalk in particular. It closes with some questions and suggestions on how to raise the value of the community, hopefully resulting in increasing the chances to see more profitable portfolios.

With all conferences going virtual this year, it's easier than ever to give a presentation: no travel days and no hotel costs. So how do you convince the organizers of an event that you're the right person with the right topic? MongoDB veteran speakers Lauren Schaefer and Sven Peters have spoken at over 300 events and will share their tips and tricks and how to avoid pitfalls when submitting a proposal to speak at a conference. In this workshop, you'll learn how to identify a topic that is perfect for both you and the conference, create a compelling title, and write a convincing abstract. And don't worry—you don't need to have tons of experience in public speaking to land your first gig.

How can we create a better collaboration between a team of designers and non-designers? One of the best ways to share our ideas across the team is through a group activity called Sketchstorming. Not only does sketchstorming allow us to build a better understanding of the problems, but it also helps the team to quickly uncover potential solutions before deep diving into details. In other words, it keeps everyone on the same page right from the start! This workshop will cover: – Intro and frameworks of Sketchstorming – The do’s and don’ts – Warm-up – Sketching techniques and tips – Group exercises (With given design challenges) – Results sharing sessions – Reflection Who should attend? This workshop is ideal for people who are trying to: – Facilitate an effective Sketchstorming session. – Enable their team to be more inclusive and collaborative. (Learn and understand various goals and perspective of other stakeholders) – Enhance their current design workflow and approaches to solving problems. – Build their confidence in visual thinking and idea sharing. Takeaways: – Hands-on tips and techniques for facilitating an effective Sketchstorming. – Tips based on real-world examples and at the same time, enable you and your team to communicate and collaborate faster. *(Pens and sketching papers provided, but feel free to bring your own. All skill levels are welcome and no previous drawing skills are needed!)

Culture eats strategy for lunch? Hah—not this time! Ancestry.com has undergone a significant and rapid transformation to continuous delivery and business agility in less than three years—and they are not done yet. Today, Ancestry has a culture significantly different from what it used to, made possible by the adoption of new practices, tools, organizational changes, management involvement, and dramatic shifts in mindset. Adopting Agile development was the catalyst, but much more had to be mixed in to create their own flavor of DevOps and continuous delivery. This talk will focus on the specific challenges, phases, and actions taken during Ancestry’s cultural metamorphosis. Come listen to how Ancestry has beaten the culture monster so you can too!

The classic product story goes like this: A small team puts a great idea to work. Said idea becomes a wildly successful app. Team makes lots of money and attracts talent from all over the globe, quickly dotting the map with international offices. In a matter of years, a very small company becomes a global superpower. Romantic notions aside, the story neglects to mention the most essential variable to product success: scalability. If a product can't withstand a growing user base and diverse team, it'll never leave the think tank. Whether you're running a small startup or trying to get your idea to take off in a large corporation, you'll need the right tools and the perspective to scale your product. Join Dustin Smith, Senior Product Manager of the Innovation Incubator at Indeed, and learn how to scale your product for greatness.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. About authorWith two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe.
