Commentary On The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
(adapted for the stage by Simon Levy)
Introduction
F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby is an impressive social commentary on many
themes such as power, money, greed, social status, and so on. The Great Gatsby is originally a
novel which has been adapted as a play by Simon Levy. I intend to look at the theoretical aspects of
this play and my major focus will be on the social stratification, inequality and gender roles in the
American life at that time. The story of the Great Gatsby falls into the timeline of the 1920s.
The Story
The story of the Great Gatsby is very interesting. It takes place in Long Island in America. A
mysterious man Jay Gatsby builds a mansion in West Egg (a fictional place in Long island). Jay

The Buchanans would never accept Gatsby as being in the same social status as them because the
Buchanans have had wealth and power in the family for generations and Gatsby had just acquired
the wealth. The Buchanans know that Gatsby comes from the lower class background and so
they think Gatsby's manner, behavior and taste can never match that of the Buchanans. Warner,
Meeker and Eels (2006) describe the concept of the American Dream as follows: "In the bright
glow and warm presence of the American Dream all men are born free and equal. Everyone in the
American Dream has the right, and often the duty, to try to succeed and to do his best to reach the
top". Warner, Meeker and Eells do consider this definition of American Dream contradictory though
as they state that "If all men are born equal, there can be no top level to strive for. No such equality,
neither in position nor in opportunity, exists and that a person's opportunities are very much
dependent on family background" (Warner, Meeker & Eells 2006). So, Gatsby's wealth still doesn't
let him enter the elite social class and this shows the inequality between the rich. During the play,
we can clearly see this when Daisy Buchanan is completely dazzled in the new found riches of Jay
Gatsby but later when Tom exposes Gatsby about his 'shady' businesses, Daisy's reaction is of shock
and she stops talking to Gatsby after that. For Daisy, just being wealthy is

My English 101 Experience
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned
many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques
that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and
how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also
learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly
quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved
writing skills are shown within each essay. When I first signed up for English 101 at soar, I thought
it was more of a reading and comprehension class...show more content...
I now see myself as a writer who has learned new techniques to help improve my writing including
style, word choice and the revision process. Even though I see myself as a improved writer, I still
believe I have plenty of room for improvement. When I first started English 101, I saw myself as
having a few good strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a writer. Some of my strengths included
being able to write a good introduction minus the thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how
to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to
understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the
improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the semester is learning how to write an essay
where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved
on knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in
my essay and on how to include both sides of a argument in my paper. Another improvement I
found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are
some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. For example, even
though I have learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to determine them in a essay, I still
feel as if I do not know how to properly included them in my essay. I also see myself as improving
on knowing how to write a thesis but still need work on

Ted Talk Essay
When it comes to choice it always seems to be a love hate relationship: we hate making them, but
we can't live without them. Anyone can all look back to a time in our lives where they wish
someone could just pick for us, or times when we wish there were more to choose from. All
Americans have many choices, and it is such a part of our daily lives that we don't even realize it.
Barry Schwartz and Sheena Iyengar's TED talks bring up interesting ideas about choice, how people
deal with them and their affects. They both state that although choice is good, it can also have
negative effects. Schwartz explains what most people believe and experience with choice, while
Iyengar shows cultural differences in choice making. Both Schwartz and Iyengar...show more

The second is the more choices the more likely that the best choice can be made, and the third
assumption is that you should never say no to choice. Iyengard evaluates these three assumptions
with various studies where one group is American and the other is another culture. Her studies
help understand why and how Americans make choices in comparison to the rest of the world.
Without doubt, Iyengard's studies and analysis on choice is interesting but Schwartz's was
clearer because it easily communicated the message that was more applicable to the public.
Choices are an important part of everyone's lives and the choices we make can reflex who we are
as individuals. Choice and the ability to choose are excellent and can represent a sense of
freedom. Schwartz's and Iyengard's analysis on choice focused on the effects of choice in people
and how people react and deal with it. Schwartz's Official Dogma and explanation of how
Americans act in response to choice making is the most relatable to individuals and clearly chows
the consequences of too much choice. His analysis can assist to people realize that maybe because
we have more choice doesn't necessarily mean we will make us happier or the best decision will be
made. Understanding the consequences of too much choice can possibly make individuals improve
the negative effects it can have and make us happier with our

Matthew Henry Commentary
In our lecture for this unit, the speaker lays out several helpful guidlines for interpreting works
written in the genre of historical narrative. The final point on this topic (#6) was: "Lean on the
experts"
The lecturer made the case that by reading and studying the interpretations of experienced
interpreters, we could grow as interpreters ourselves. While I have absolutely no problem with
consulting the commentaries, books, and teachings of spiritually minded individuals to help us
become better readers of God's word, I think that it is also possible for someone to lean on these
resources too much.
I remember a time in my life when I was more excited to read from my Matthew Henry commentary
than I was to read my own Bible! When it came

My overall experience in English 1301 has definitely changed the manner in which I think, write,
and read. I have learned a great deal in this class, mainly on how to write an extended definition
essay and also how to effectively include commentary in an essay. These new things as well as
many others that I have learned in this class will help me succeed in other classes. I believe these
skills will help me succeed because I can apply it to other essays I write and also discussions. I
think something that I did not know very well when I came into this class was grammar. After I
took the first grammar quiz, I felt a little lost. This changed once the answer key was released and I
really tried to understand the concept. I can now correct grammar

Presentation Commentary Essay
"There are two secrets to making a good presentation: preparation and practice" (p.6) this from Hindle
(1998) gives clear instruction on to how best go about starting a presentation. First the subject matter
must be refined, the purpose of the presentation decided and the tone set. From this point it is easier
to start gathering materials, the sources will be dictated by the type of presentation being given. If
the presentation is lighter in nature it would be acceptable to gather information from a similarly
informal source such as the internet. However if the presentation is more formal and intended to be
informative rather than entertaining, sources must be thoroughly researched and gathered from
reputable publications. Whilst it is...show more content...
Many may be unable to identify the differences offhand but the written word passed off as spoken
will jar to an audience who may then disengage from a presentation that sounds stilted and
impersonal. The spoken word allows for colloquialisms, words which under the under the usual
grammatical restraints would be frowned upon, become acceptable, even preferable as they bring
the presenter closer to their audience. It implies that the speaker is not reading off a script but
actually talking to the audience. It creates the illusion that they are participating in a conversation
rather than being talked at, which may cause them to become detached from the speaker. A more
relaxed conversational tone builds rapport and will go a long way towards maintaining the attention
of the room. When reading written text the reader is able to go at their own pace, look up certain
words or re–read a sentence. When listening to spoken word this is not possible. As Jay and Jay
(2004) point out, "...for writing for that sort of communication you have to think in new ways about
clarity and lucidity: in a presentation you not only have to present all the relevant information
clearly, you also have to present it in the best order for instant assimilation (p.41)." A good
presentation is one which fulfils its brief, whether that be to entertain, inform or persuade. There are
many different ways in which these objectives can be achieved but

Matthew Henry Concise Commentary
The first commentary that I read was "Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary." In reading this
commentary I found it to be easy to understand what this scripture is speaking about. It referenced
about how God warns us about spending our time on worrying about the cares of this life. Not
only that but it broke it down so eloquently as to what we are to seek instead of things of in this
life. Also, I like how it stated, "If we take care about our souls and for eternity, which are more than
the body and its life, we may leave it to God to provide for us food and raiment, which are less,"
Bibleapps.com/commentaries).
This commentary peaked my interest in me wanting to do an even more in–depth study of this
scripture and not just for this assignment.

Reflective Essay on Writing Skills
I always thought that my writing skills were pretty good until I started this class. It has been
thirteen years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of "refreshing"
to do as far as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did
not score very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to
really improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have
forgotten since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should
master. Writing is such a major part of communication in this day and age so being able to write

The color ambiguity or duality of the color symbology mentioned above is progressively
demystified as we move through these pars as the author clearly shows that the linkage is with

The Captain who is supposed to be able to tell when danger approaches is also befuddled by the
charms on show by the lady and so is the unattractive flat eyed flat fish who even though too ugly
to be a real contender satisfies himself by looking at her from the distance. This list of men who
fall into her trap is further expounded with the description of the gallants who 'circle' and try to
make small talk ('fish pause so to nibble or tug) but all to no avail. By now we start seeing the
men and their antics as pathetic as it is pretty clear that the woman has already made up her mind.
The poem ends on a very blunt note. When the ice cream is being had the men are vying for the
woman based on their looks, character and the like while the rich magnate 'stayed to watch' During
this time money became temporarily inconsequential but at the end of the day when the ice cream
was finished, it is paid for by the rich man and the other men seeing this acknowledge defeat and
leave. The author has used a lot of caesura in this stanza to underline the point that after all the show

Othello Analysis Essay examples
The tragedy of Othello, written by William Shakespeare, presents the main character Othello, as a
respectable, honorable, and dignified man, but because of his insecurities and good nature, he is
easily taken advantage of and manipulated by his peers and alleged friends. The dynamic of Othello's
character significantly changes throughout the play. The contrast is most pronounced from the
beginning of the play to its conclusion, switching from being calm and peaceful to acts of
uncontrolled venomous rage. Othello's motivation in the play appears to be his love and concern for
his wife Desdemona, which ironically, ends up being his downfall in the end. In the beginning of the
play Othello exhibits behaviors leading one to believe that he...show more content...
The duke then sent Othello and some of his men to command a military patrol in Cyprus. Othello
takes Desdemona with him and in Cyprus he continued to be polite, respectful, and charming,
saying things like, "It gives me wonder great as my content to see you here before me" (II.i.83). He
says this to Desdemona reassuring his love and care for her.
By the middle of the play Othello's mood and demeanor seem to shift from being peaceful and
patient to very anxious, paranoid, and gullible. For example when Othello is talking to Iago and
Iago suggests that maybe his wife is not being faithful to him, it becomes Othello's obsession to get
down to the bottom of it and catch her. "I have been talking with your suitor here, a man that
languishes in your displeasure / Who is't you mean / Why, your lieutenant, Cassio. Good my lord"
(III.iii.41–43). In this dialog between Othello and Iago, with just two sentences Iago causes
Othello to lose trust in his wife and believe she is being unfaithful to him which grows stronger
and stronger each scene of the play. Because Iago is extremely cunning and manipulative, he is
able to control almost anyone he chooses and he is in control of Othello's emotions because he
knows the things Othello fears. Iago is pretending to be Othello's friend but secretively is going
behind his back and bringing him down. Iago convinces Othello that Cassio is having an affair with
Desdemona. "I humbly do beseech

C. Commentary: Discuss the central issue addressed in each reading. Explain the relationship among
the different perspectives taken on developing reading competence in each of the readings. What
conclusions might be drawn about the challenges in facilitating literacy for urban and other
underserved students? What approaches might best serve the needs of these students?
Shanahan (2011) makes an excellent point that for each discipline there should be a different way of
ensuring that learning is taking place. Not all disciplines are the same, so their approaches should be
different as well. If students struggle with history they may also struggle with English if they are
taught the same way. Learning goals and strategies vary by class and so should teaching method and
delivery. The points in this article should be taken into consideration when teachers create lesson
plans.
Taylor (2003) et al. in this study investigated the effects of teaching on students' reading
achievement. If students are tested repeatedly via assessment and homework over the same topic
they will lose interest and momentum. Taylor makes a point of showing educators that higher order
thinking is necessary and more...show more content...
It is important to understand that there are many factors that can affect how students learn to read.
Schools and teachers are two factors that determine how students learn. Schools may not always
have the most up to date, or helpful resources to help this demographic of students. Teachers may
not always be prepared to help struggling students. Together these two factors enable the
achievement gap to be what it is. In order to alter the gap schools should first work on helping their
teachers and making sure that everyone is on the same

Reflection Of A Short Story
I enjoy writing short stories because the activity allows me to express my creativity and speak my
mind. However, I often have trouble finishing compositions, and my English professors will often
tell me I need to improve my work. Recently, I wrote a short story titled "Unexpected" for a
fiction–writing class and made countless changes to the tale based on several guidelines. The
revisions to "Unexpected" have benefited my story, but I could have done more to improve it. My
original story served as an impromptu launching pad for the revisions, which expanded my work
into a more stable, detailed narrative. However, I probably should have asked for help from tutors
and my fiction professor, Jackie because they understand short stories...show more content...
But three methods of revisions helped me better understand the changes I made to my narrative.
First, I printed my original work and jotted down revisions based on 25 questions from a book I
study in fiction class, What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. These notes helped me add a
wide variety of details to my story. Next, I typed my new story and used a grammar check website
called PaperRater to improve the style of my tale. This aspect includes, of course, grammar, but
also transitional phrases (I am not sure if those are important in a short story) as well as
vocabulary. And eventually, I tweaked my composition after carefully reading my story to myself.
I learned that reading your own work aloud helps you further comprehend any revisions you should
make. As a result of following these revision guidelines, I improved my story dramatically; it more
than tripled the word count of my story to about one thousand words. Furthermore, I usually only
use PaperRater for revising fiction and nonfiction works I write for English classes. My new
technique of modifying my narratives have truly expanded my stories as well as my imagination.
But despite these accomplishments, I could have further improved my story. When I wrote a poetry
explication essay for nonfiction writing class, I did not just turn to PaperRater. I asked my
professor, Ben, for help writing the essay during his office hours. I wish I could have done

Essay about Commentary on Persuasive Speeches
Commentary on Persuasive Speeches
In order to begin this piece of work we looked at persuasive speeches in our lessons. These
speeches were from famous people, such as Hitler and Tony Blair. However, my personal
inspiration came from a speech from Diana Princess Of Wales, entitled, 'Women and children with
aids.' This acted as a style model for my final piece and gave me the basis for my ideas. As well as
this it helped in my planning, as I could see which techniques were the most effective and how to
craft the piece for maximum effect.
My original idea was to write a persuasive speech about the very serious issue of poverty. However, I
found it difficult to write a long enough speech to fit...show more content...
The tone of the article is serious and reflective, however it is clear and to the point. This helps the
purpose of the piece come across more clearly. The intended effect on the audience is reached as it
stimulates the reader to reflect on themselves and other people, gently persuading the reader
unconsciously.
The structure of the article is clearly set out with a strong opening and ending. There is more
descriptive language in the middle of the article as well as facts and figures used to back up
statements. This makes the piece simple to read but effective at the same time. The lexis which is
used is more challenging for the selected audience, 'acknowledge, desperation, judgemental.' The
lexis would be much more simple compared to an article for a child.
The idea of helping the 'dark shadow of poverty fade' and 'reaching the light at the end of the tunnel'
are used as figurative language features. This was also used as emotive language to stimulate the
audience and their emotions.
The successful aspects of this article include the lexis, which I have chosen to complement the genre,
the shaping of the writing to the selected audience, as well as the purpose. The pictures help the

Personal Commentary On My Memoir
My memoir tells the story of two very excited teenagers going on a camping trip. These two teens
are me and my friend, Zach. During this trip, everything that could have gone wrong, does. The
story is told in a series of key events among that weekend that were just one disaster after another,
followed by optimistic attitudes, continuously searching for the positive in each situation. The
audience that I will be able to reach with this narrative is very broad. A younger audience will be
easy to appeal to because this is the age of adventure and making mistakes. In addition to this, an
older audience can be acknowledged because I believe one is never too old for adventure. That is
shown through the inclusion of the women that were the ones to...show more content...
I believe this was the best way to get my point across to my chosen audience. By writing it as a blog,
I was able to keep my scenes short and detailed so as to not bore the reader. I wrote about only the
most plot and moral enhancing parts of the trip by using a journal–like concept of small blurbs
within strong imagery and metaphors. This has the ability to make the reader feel as though they
were actually there through all the good, and the bad. The reader is capable of getting a better
understanding of the experience by being able to visualize it through the pictures, videos, and
imagery used to describe exactly how we felt. The images show just how beautiful the scenery
was and how secluded we were from everything, giving the audience a good visual of the situations
we were put through with no help from our phones or the internet. The most effective sections of
my blog were the inclusions of internal monologue. I really tried to remember exactly how I was
feeling and what I was thinking during each downfall in order to accurately portray it. The sharp
contrast between what I was thinking to myself versus how we physically kept being positive and
continuing our journey, shows the audience how it influenced our getaway. Just being willing to go
on, no matter how disappointed I was feeling at times, was the key decision that not only got us
through the difficult moments, but allowed us to have an amazing experience

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

Patchwork Commentary
Patchwork Analysis
Eavan Boland's unique poem, Patchwork, allows the reader to be privy to the private thoughts of a
persona, presumably the author herself, as she struggles to answer the question of fate or destiny.
Throughout the poem, while quilting alone late at night, the speaker puzzles over the randomness of
the universe, utilizing the simple quilt metaphor to inspire a final epiphany.
Immediately revealing the central theme of the poem as well as alluding to the narrator's apparent
self–doubt, the first stanza is an imperative aspect of this piece. The speaker begins by stating that
she has "been thinking at random on the universe, or rather, how nothing in the universe is random".
So commences her journey to solve the question:...show more content...
The word "mechanical" suggests that the woman is acting mindlessly, almost as if guided by a
higher power. Fate determines that the quilt will be made, and so it will be. It guides the woman's
hands as her mind once again floats away from reality and begins to explore the metaphysical world.
In addition, upon describing her "secondhand sewing machine", the narrator further exposes her
self–depreciating character.
In the fifth stanza, the speaker makes inconsiderable progress in solving the crucial question
regarding the randomness of the universe. As she realizes the overwhelming number of uncertainties
in the universe, the woman chooses instead to concentrate on the task at hand, turning her "back...to
the dark" or the unknowns. However, she is unable to resist the compelling temptation of mystery,
and quickly attempts to contemplate the "stars and bits of stars and little bits of bits" which reside
throughout the universe. While the "bits" in this statement signify randomness, the "stars" represent
the unknown. This symbolism, coupled with the use of repetition and alliteration, emphasize the
woman's sheer confusion on the matter at hand. The vast uncertainty of the universe has forced her
to consider the possibility of a wholly random universe. The persona's confusion is confirmed
through her question: "is it craft or art?" In this circumstance, "craft" represents a universe in which

Literary and Non Literary Texts Essay example

focussing on the language features used, the structural and presentational devices, the use of correct
punctuations, analyse the structure of the non literary text for bias and the techniques used to
convey meaning and ideas by both authors. The objective of literary texts is to teach the readers a

the first couple of paragraphs or so, the readers can easily get a good overview of what the article is
all about.
The structure of the poem is made up of five stanzas of four lines each. The poem is well
organised which, in my opinion, that the poet has planned a certain course of action. The one word
sentence "Anything" or other short sentences used throughout the poem sets the pace and tone of
the poem. It may have been used by the poet to force the message into the readers' mind. This
works well with the violent actions and images in the poem. They also break the flow and rhythm
which helps to create the mood and set an angry tone in the poem and also suggesting a 'broken'
character. Enjambment is the continuation of a sentence form one line or couplet into the next. It is
used by Duffy to give the stanzas the rhythm of natural speech which makes the persona sounds
more violent and aggressive.
The linguistic and stylistic features used in the newspaper article are factual and accurate, clear and
concise to inform its readers. It also authenticates and supports claims and adds weight to its content.
The use of quoted references confirmed the factuality of the writer's information

the ruins of the Artemision, the civic agora, the temple of Domitian, gymnasiums, public baths, a

private residences" (Holman, np). This was a big city, full of culture, and full of ungodly people
and activities. Among the many religious groups in the city, there were many Jews there who were
brought the gospel right after Pentecost (Orr, np). Because of the pluralism of religions in the city,
new Christians didn't know exactly what to believe or how to worship. On top of this, the city was
constantly bombarded with false teachers trying to tell people that salvation came from works, not
faith (MacArthur, np).
Paul visited Ephesus on his first missionary journey, on the way from Greece to Syria. After his third

"Though Paul was not the first to bring Christianity to Ephesus, for Jews had long lived there, he

How To Write Commentary In An Essay

  • 1. Commentary On The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby (adapted for the stage by Simon Levy) Introduction F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby is an impressive social commentary on many themes such as power, money, greed, social status, and so on. The Great Gatsby is originally a novel which has been adapted as a play by Simon Levy. I intend to look at the theoretical aspects of this play and my major focus will be on the social stratification, inequality and gender roles in the American life at that time. The story of the Great Gatsby falls into the timeline of the 1920s. The Story The story of the Great Gatsby is very interesting. It takes place in Long Island in America. A mysterious man Jay Gatsby builds a mansion in West Egg (a fictional place in Long island). Jay ...show more content... The Buchanans would never accept Gatsby as being in the same social status as them because the Buchanans have had wealth and power in the family for generations and Gatsby had just acquired the wealth. The Buchanans know that Gatsby comes from the lower class background and so they think Gatsby's manner, behavior and taste can never match that of the Buchanans. Warner, Meeker and Eels (2006) describe the concept of the American Dream as follows: "In the bright glow and warm presence of the American Dream all men are born free and equal. Everyone in the American Dream has the right, and often the duty, to try to succeed and to do his best to reach the top". Warner, Meeker and Eells do consider this definition of American Dream contradictory though as they state that "If all men are born equal, there can be no top level to strive for. No such equality, neither in position nor in opportunity, exists and that a person's opportunities are very much dependent on family background" (Warner, Meeker & Eells 2006). So, Gatsby's wealth still doesn't let him enter the elite social class and this shows the inequality between the rich. During the play, we can clearly see this when Daisy Buchanan is completely dazzled in the new found riches of Jay Gatsby but later when Tom exposes Gatsby about his 'shady' businesses, Daisy's reaction is of shock and she stops talking to Gatsby after that. For Daisy, just being wealthy is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My English 101 Experience As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay. When I first signed up for English 101 at soar, I thought it was more of a reading and comprehension class...show more content... I now see myself as a writer who has learned new techniques to help improve my writing including style, word choice and the revision process. Even though I see myself as a improved writer, I still believe I have plenty of room for improvement. When I first started English 101, I saw myself as having a few good strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a writer. Some of my strengths included being able to write a good introduction minus the thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the semester is learning how to write an essay where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved on knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in my essay and on how to include both sides of a argument in my paper. Another improvement I found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. For example, even though I have learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to determine them in a essay, I still feel as if I do not know how to properly included them in my essay. I also see myself as improving on knowing how to write a thesis but still need work on Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Ted Talk Essay When it comes to choice it always seems to be a love hate relationship: we hate making them, but we can't live without them. Anyone can all look back to a time in our lives where they wish someone could just pick for us, or times when we wish there were more to choose from. All Americans have many choices, and it is such a part of our daily lives that we don't even realize it. Barry Schwartz and Sheena Iyengar's TED talks bring up interesting ideas about choice, how people deal with them and their affects. They both state that although choice is good, it can also have negative effects. Schwartz explains what most people believe and experience with choice, while Iyengar shows cultural differences in choice making. Both Schwartz and Iyengar...show more content... The second is the more choices the more likely that the best choice can be made, and the third assumption is that you should never say no to choice. Iyengard evaluates these three assumptions with various studies where one group is American and the other is another culture. Her studies help understand why and how Americans make choices in comparison to the rest of the world. Without doubt, Iyengard's studies and analysis on choice is interesting but Schwartz's was clearer because it easily communicated the message that was more applicable to the public. Choices are an important part of everyone's lives and the choices we make can reflex who we are as individuals. Choice and the ability to choose are excellent and can represent a sense of freedom. Schwartz's and Iyengard's analysis on choice focused on the effects of choice in people and how people react and deal with it. Schwartz's Official Dogma and explanation of how Americans act in response to choice making is the most relatable to individuals and clearly chows the consequences of too much choice. His analysis can assist to people realize that maybe because we have more choice doesn't necessarily mean we will make us happier or the best decision will be made. Understanding the consequences of too much choice can possibly make individuals improve the negative effects it can have and make us happier with our Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Matthew Henry Commentary In our lecture for this unit, the speaker lays out several helpful guidlines for interpreting works written in the genre of historical narrative. The final point on this topic (#6) was: "Lean on the experts" The lecturer made the case that by reading and studying the interpretations of experienced interpreters, we could grow as interpreters ourselves. While I have absolutely no problem with consulting the commentaries, books, and teachings of spiritually minded individuals to help us become better readers of God's word, I think that it is also possible for someone to lean on these resources too much. I remember a time in my life when I was more excited to read from my Matthew Henry commentary than I was to read my own Bible! When it came Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. My overall experience in English 1301 has definitely changed the manner in which I think, write, and read. I have learned a great deal in this class, mainly on how to write an extended definition essay and also how to effectively include commentary in an essay. These new things as well as many others that I have learned in this class will help me succeed in other classes. I believe these skills will help me succeed because I can apply it to other essays I write and also discussions. I think something that I did not know very well when I came into this class was grammar. After I took the first grammar quiz, I felt a little lost. This changed once the answer key was released and I really tried to understand the concept. I can now correct grammar Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Presentation Commentary Essay "There are two secrets to making a good presentation: preparation and practice" (p.6) this from Hindle (1998) gives clear instruction on to how best go about starting a presentation. First the subject matter must be refined, the purpose of the presentation decided and the tone set. From this point it is easier to start gathering materials, the sources will be dictated by the type of presentation being given. If the presentation is lighter in nature it would be acceptable to gather information from a similarly informal source such as the internet. However if the presentation is more formal and intended to be informative rather than entertaining, sources must be thoroughly researched and gathered from reputable publications. Whilst it is...show more content... Many may be unable to identify the differences offhand but the written word passed off as spoken will jar to an audience who may then disengage from a presentation that sounds stilted and impersonal. The spoken word allows for colloquialisms, words which under the under the usual grammatical restraints would be frowned upon, become acceptable, even preferable as they bring the presenter closer to their audience. It implies that the speaker is not reading off a script but actually talking to the audience. It creates the illusion that they are participating in a conversation rather than being talked at, which may cause them to become detached from the speaker. A more relaxed conversational tone builds rapport and will go a long way towards maintaining the attention of the room. When reading written text the reader is able to go at their own pace, look up certain words or re–read a sentence. When listening to spoken word this is not possible. As Jay and Jay (2004) point out, "...for writing for that sort of communication you have to think in new ways about clarity and lucidity: in a presentation you not only have to present all the relevant information clearly, you also have to present it in the best order for instant assimilation (p.41)." A good presentation is one which fulfils its brief, whether that be to entertain, inform or persuade. There are many different ways in which these objectives can be achieved but Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Matthew Henry Concise Commentary The first commentary that I read was "Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary." In reading this commentary I found it to be easy to understand what this scripture is speaking about. It referenced about how God warns us about spending our time on worrying about the cares of this life. Not only that but it broke it down so eloquently as to what we are to seek instead of things of in this life. Also, I like how it stated, "If we take care about our souls and for eternity, which are more than the body and its life, we may leave it to God to provide for us food and raiment, which are less," Bibleapps.com/commentaries). This commentary peaked my interest in me wanting to do an even more in–depth study of this scripture and not just for this assignment. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It has been thirteen years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of "refreshing" to do as far as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did not score very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to really improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have forgotten since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. This hierarchy is further developed*in the actions of the different suitors. The rich magnate 'through the frail reefs of furniture swims out', the inverted syntax* in the line* suggesting grace and power. *T*he self–assured manner in which he acts suggests that the rich man is above the petty rivalries* that the others have. The color ambiguity or duality of the color symbology mentioned above is progressively demystified as we move through these pars as the author clearly shows that the linkage is with lust and greed. The author then progresses to describe the others who seek the lady's attention. The Captain who is supposed to be able to tell when danger approaches is also befuddled by the charms on show by the lady and so is the unattractive flat eyed flat fish who even though too ugly to be a real contender satisfies himself by looking at her from the distance. This list of men who fall into her trap is further expounded with the description of the gallants who 'circle' and try to make small talk ('fish pause so to nibble or tug) but all to no avail. By now we start seeing the men and their antics as pathetic as it is pretty clear that the woman has already made up her mind. The poem ends on a very blunt note. When the ice cream is being had the men are vying for the woman based on their looks, character and the like while the rich magnate 'stayed to watch' During this time money became temporarily inconsequential but at the end of the day when the ice cream was finished, it is paid for by the rich man and the other men seeing this acknowledge defeat and leave. • 10. Othello Analysis Essay examples The tragedy of Othello, written by William Shakespeare, presents the main character Othello, as a respectable, honorable, and dignified man, but because of his insecurities and good nature, he is easily taken advantage of and manipulated by his peers and alleged friends. The dynamic of Othello's character significantly changes throughout the play. The contrast is most pronounced from the beginning of the play to its conclusion, switching from being calm and peaceful to acts of uncontrolled venomous rage. Othello's motivation in the play appears to be his love and concern for his wife Desdemona, which ironically, ends up being his downfall in the end. In the beginning of the play Othello exhibits behaviors leading one to believe that he...show more content... The duke then sent Othello and some of his men to command a military patrol in Cyprus. Othello takes Desdemona with him and in Cyprus he continued to be polite, respectful, and charming, saying things like, "It gives me wonder great as my content to see you here before me" (II.i.83). He says this to Desdemona reassuring his love and care for her. By the middle of the play Othello's mood and demeanor seem to shift from being peaceful and patient to very anxious, paranoid, and gullible. For example when Othello is talking to Iago and Iago suggests that maybe his wife is not being faithful to him, it becomes Othello's obsession to get down to the bottom of it and catch her. "I have been talking with your suitor here, a man that languishes in your displeasure / Who is't you mean / Why, your lieutenant, Cassio. Good my lord" (III.iii.41–43). In this dialog between Othello and Iago, with just two sentences Iago causes Othello to lose trust in his wife and believe she is being unfaithful to him which grows stronger and stronger each scene of the play. Because Iago is extremely cunning and manipulative, he is able to control almost anyone he chooses and he is in control of Othello's emotions because he knows the things Othello fears. Iago is pretending to be Othello's friend but secretively is going behind his back and bringing him down. Iago convinces Othello that Cassio is having an affair with Desdemona. • 11. Commentary Sample Module # 5 C. Commentary: Discuss the central issue addressed in each reading. Explain the relationship among the different perspectives taken on developing reading competence in each of the readings. What conclusions might be drawn about the challenges in facilitating literacy for urban and other underserved students? What approaches might best serve the needs of these students? Shanahan (2011) makes an excellent point that for each discipline there should be a different way of ensuring that learning is taking place. Not all disciplines are the same, so their approaches should be different as well. If students struggle with history they may also struggle with English if they are taught the same way. Learning goals and strategies vary by class and so should teaching method and delivery. The points in this article should be taken into consideration when teachers create lesson plans. Taylor (2003) et al. in this study investigated the effects of teaching on students' reading achievement. • 12. Reflection Of A Short Story I enjoy writing short stories because the activity allows me to express my creativity and speak my mind. However, I often have trouble finishing compositions, and my English professors will often tell me I need to improve my work. Recently, I wrote a short story titled "Unexpected" for a fiction–writing class and made countless changes to the tale based on several guidelines. The revisions to "Unexpected" have benefited my story, but I could have done more to improve it. My original story served as an impromptu launching pad for the revisions, which expanded my work into a more stable, detailed narrative. However, I probably should have asked for help from tutors and my fiction professor, Jackie because they understand short stories...show more content... But three methods of revisions helped me better understand the changes I made to my narrative. First, I printed my original work and jotted down revisions based on 25 questions from a book I study in fiction class, What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. These notes helped me add a wide variety of details to my story. Next, I typed my new story and used a grammar check website called PaperRater to improve the style of my tale. This aspect includes, of course, grammar, but also transitional phrases (I am not sure if those are important in a short story) as well as vocabulary. And eventually, I tweaked my composition after carefully reading my story to myself. I learned that reading your own work aloud helps you further comprehend any revisions you should make. As a result of following these revision guidelines, I improved my story dramatically; it more than tripled the word count of my story to about one thousand words. Furthermore, I usually only use PaperRater for revising fiction and nonfiction works I write for English classes. My new technique of modifying my narratives have truly expanded my stories as well as my imagination. But despite these accomplishments, I could have further improved my story. When I wrote a poetry explication essay for nonfiction writing class, I did not just turn to PaperRater. I asked my professor, Ben, for help writing the essay during his office hours. • 13. Essay about Commentary on Persuasive Speeches Commentary on Persuasive Speeches In order to begin this piece of work we looked at persuasive speeches in our lessons. These speeches were from famous people, such as Hitler and Tony Blair. However, my personal inspiration came from a speech from Diana Princess Of Wales, entitled, 'Women and children with aids.' This acted as a style model for my final piece and gave me the basis for my ideas. As well as this it helped in my planning, as I could see which techniques were the most effective and how to craft the piece for maximum effect. My original idea was to write a persuasive speech about the very serious issue of poverty. However, I found it difficult to write a long enough speech to fit...show more content... The tone of the article is serious and reflective, however it is clear and to the point. This helps the purpose of the piece come across more clearly. The intended effect on the audience is reached as it stimulates the reader to reflect on themselves and other people, gently persuading the reader unconsciously. The structure of the article is clearly set out with a strong opening and ending. There is more descriptive language in the middle of the article as well as facts and figures used to back up statements. This makes the piece simple to read but effective at the same time. The lexis which is used is more challenging for the selected audience, 'acknowledge, desperation, judgemental.' The lexis would be much more simple compared to an article for a child. The idea of helping the 'dark shadow of poverty fade' and 'reaching the light at the end of the tunnel' are used as figurative language features. This was also used as emotive language to stimulate the audience and their emotions. The successful aspects of this article include the lexis, which I have chosen to complement the genre, the shaping of the writing to the selected audience, as well as the purpose. The pictures help the graphology of the article Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Personal Commentary On My Memoir My memoir tells the story of two very excited teenagers going on a camping trip. These two teens are me and my friend, Zach. During this trip, everything that could have gone wrong, does. The story is told in a series of key events among that weekend that were just one disaster after another, followed by optimistic attitudes, continuously searching for the positive in each situation. The audience that I will be able to reach with this narrative is very broad. A younger audience will be easy to appeal to because this is the age of adventure and making mistakes. In addition to this, an older audience can be acknowledged because I believe one is never too old for adventure. That is shown through the inclusion of the women that were the ones to...show more content... I believe this was the best way to get my point across to my chosen audience. By writing it as a blog, I was able to keep my scenes short and detailed so as to not bore the reader. I wrote about only the most plot and moral enhancing parts of the trip by using a journal–like concept of small blurbs within strong imagery and metaphors. This has the ability to make the reader feel as though they were actually there through all the good, and the bad. The reader is capable of getting a better understanding of the experience by being able to visualize it through the pictures, videos, and imagery used to describe exactly how we felt. The images show just how beautiful the scenery was and how secluded we were from everything, giving the audience a good visual of the situations we were put through with no help from our phones or the internet. The most effective sections of my blog were the inclusions of internal monologue. I really tried to remember exactly how I was feeling and what I was thinking during each downfall in order to accurately portray it. The sharp contrast between what I was thinking to myself versus how we physically kept being positive and continuing our journey, shows the audience how it influenced our getaway. Just being willing to go on, no matter how disappointed I was feeling at times, was the key decision that not only got us through the difficult moments, but allowed us to have an amazing experience Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Patchwork Commentary Patchwork Analysis Eavan Boland's unique poem, Patchwork, allows the reader to be privy to the private thoughts of a persona, presumably the author herself, as she struggles to answer the question of fate or destiny. Throughout the poem, while quilting alone late at night, the speaker puzzles over the randomness of the universe, utilizing the simple quilt metaphor to inspire a final epiphany. Immediately revealing the central theme of the poem as well as alluding to the narrator's apparent self–doubt, the first stanza is an imperative aspect of this piece. The speaker begins by stating that she has "been thinking at random on the universe, or rather, how nothing in the universe is random". So commences her journey to solve the question:...show more content... The word "mechanical" suggests that the woman is acting mindlessly, almost as if guided by a higher power. Fate determines that the quilt will be made, and so it will be. It guides the woman's hands as her mind once again floats away from reality and begins to explore the metaphysical world. In addition, upon describing her "secondhand sewing machine", the narrator further exposes her self–depreciating character. In the fifth stanza, the speaker makes inconsiderable progress in solving the crucial question regarding the randomness of the universe. As she realizes the overwhelming number of uncertainties in the universe, the woman chooses instead to concentrate on the task at hand, turning her "back...to the dark" or the unknowns. However, she is unable to resist the compelling temptation of mystery, and quickly attempts to contemplate the "stars and bits of stars and little bits of bits" which reside throughout the universe. While the "bits" in this statement signify randomness, the "stars" represent the unknown. This symbolism, coupled with the use of repetition and alliteration, emphasize the woman's sheer confusion on the matter at hand. The vast uncertainty of the universe has forced her to consider the possibility of a wholly random universe. The persona's confusion is confirmed through her question: "is it craft or art?" • 18. Literary and Non Literary Texts Essay example In this paper I am going to compare and contrast a literary text (Education for Leisure by Carol Ann Duffy) and a non literary text (Newspaper article from "The Independent" by Nigel Morris) focussing on the language features used, the structural and presentational devices, the use of correct punctuations, analyse the structure of the non literary text for bias and the techniques used to convey meaning and ideas by both authors. The objective of literary texts is to teach the readers a life lesson with the development and growth of the main character as the plot unfolds. These types of texts have a meaning behind the writing instead of just being written for fun. Literary texts mainly focus on problems or weaknesses of the society that are...show more content... Furthermore, the writer has used the "Inverted Pyramid" technique, meaning, all the key information is at the top with the least important are arranged in descending order. By the reading the first couple of paragraphs or so, the readers can easily get a good overview of what the article is all about. The structure of the poem is made up of five stanzas of four lines each. The poem is well organised which, in my opinion, that the poet has planned a certain course of action. The one word sentence "Anything" or other short sentences used throughout the poem sets the pace and tone of the poem. It may have been used by the poet to force the message into the readers' mind. This works well with the violent actions and images in the poem. They also break the flow and rhythm which helps to create the mood and set an angry tone in the poem and also suggesting a 'broken' character. Enjambment is the continuation of a sentence form one line or couplet into the next. It is used by Duffy to give the stanzas the rhythm of natural speech which makes the persona sounds more violent and aggressive. The linguistic and stylistic features used in the newspaper article are factual and accurate, clear and concise to inform its readers. It also authenticates and supports claims and adds weight to its content. The use of quoted references confirmed the factuality of the writer's information Get more content on HelpWriting.net

"The grandeur of the ancient city is evident in the remains uncovered by archaeologists, including the ruins of the Artemision, the civic agora, the temple of Domitian, gymnasiums, public baths, a theater with seating for 24,000, a library, and the commercial agora, as well as several streets and private residences" (Holman, np). This was a big city, full of culture, and full of ungodly people and activities. Among the many religious groups in the city, there were many Jews there who were brought the gospel right after Pentecost (Orr, np). Because of the pluralism of religions in the city, new Christians didn't know exactly what to believe or how to worship. On top of this, the city was constantly bombarded with false teachers trying to tell people that salvation came from works, not faith (MacArthur, np). Paul visited Ephesus on his first missionary journey, on the way from Greece to Syria. After his third missionary journey, he stayed there and pastored the Ephesian church for 3 years (Easton, np). "Though Paul was not the first to bring Christianity to Ephesus, for Jews had long lived there, he was the first to make progress against the worship of Diana" (Orr, np). Because of his strong ties to the church, Paul cared deeply about the faith of the believers there (Macarthur, np). The theme of his letter to the Ephesians is that believers have been unified in salvation by grace and are called to live like Christ. Ephesians 2:1–8 focused mainly
