commentary Dred Scott Essay example
This commentary will focus on the impact of the Dred Scott decision in America. Dred Scott was
born a slave in Virginia to the family of Peter Blow originally. The family moved to St. Louis and
sold Scott to Dr. John Emerson, a military surgeon stationed at Jefferson Barracks. Scott traveled
with Dr. Emerson to different areas such as Illinois and Wisconsin territories, where slavery was
prohibited. This is because of the Missouri Compromise, this compromise was created to end
expansion of slavery and permitted Missouri to entered as a slave state and Illinois was entered as a
free state. Because Scott had traveled to free territory, he felt that he was a free man and sued to be
free. The first case is against Emerson's wife and is...show more content...
It was evident that Buchanan knew what the outcome of the high decision would be as you read the
inaugural address given below:
A difference of opinion has arisen in regard to the point of time when the people of a Territory shall
decide this question (of slavery) for themselves.
This is, happily, a matter of but little practical importance. Besides, it is a judicial question, which
legitimately belongs to the Supreme Court of the United states, before whom it is now pending, and
will, it is understood, be speedily and finally settled. To their decision, in common with all good
citizens, I shall cheerfully submit, whatever this may be.
The Supreme Court ruled on this matter and it was in favor of Sanford, the court ordered that Scott
was not a free man and that he was to remain as a slave. The court swayed away from the issue of
Scott's travels to areas in which slavery was prohibited and focus on whether he was a citizen of the
U.S. They found that because he was imported in the country, by way of his ancestors, he didn't have
the same rights and privileges stated in the Constitution. The Constitution couldn't deprive citizens of
their right to property and that included slaves. The Missouri Compromise was the reasoning behind
the suit for Scott, was ruled unconstitutional by the high court. The court affirmed the decision of the
lower court.

C. Commentary: Discuss the central issue addressed in each reading. Explain the relationship among
the different perspectives taken on developing reading competence in each of the readings. What
conclusions might be drawn about the challenges in facilitating literacy for urban and other
underserved students? What approaches might best serve the needs of these students?
Shanahan (2011) makes an excellent point that for each discipline there should be a different way of
ensuring that learning is taking place. Not all disciplines are the same, so their approaches should be
different as well. If students struggle with history they may also struggle with English if they are
taught the same way. Learning goals and strategies vary by class and so should teaching method and
delivery. The points in this article should be taken into consideration when teachers create lesson
plans.
Taylor (2003) et al. in this study investigated the effects of teaching on students' reading
achievement. If students are tested repeatedly via assessment and homework over the same topic
they will lose interest and momentum. Taylor makes a point of showing educators that higher order
thinking is necessary and more...show more content...
It is important to understand that there are many factors that can affect how students learn to read.
Schools and teachers are two factors that determine how students learn. Schools may not always
have the most up to date, or helpful resources to help this demographic of students. Teachers may
not always be prepared to help struggling students. Together these two factors enable the
achievement gap to be what it is. In order to alter the gap schools should first work on helping their
teachers and making sure that everyone is on the same

Presentation Commentary Essay
"There are two secrets to making a good presentation: preparation and practice" (p.6) this from Hindle
(1998) gives clear instruction on to how best go about starting a presentation. First the subject matter
must be refined, the purpose of the presentation decided and the tone set. From this point it is easier
to start gathering materials, the sources will be dictated by the type of presentation being given. If
the presentation is lighter in nature it would be acceptable to gather information from a similarly
informal source such as the internet. However if the presentation is more formal and intended to be
informative rather than entertaining, sources must be thoroughly researched and gathered from
reputable publications. Whilst it is...show more content...
Many may be unable to identify the differences offhand but the written word passed off as spoken
will jar to an audience who may then disengage from a presentation that sounds stilted and
impersonal. The spoken word allows for colloquialisms, words which under the under the usual
grammatical restraints would be frowned upon, become acceptable, even preferable as they bring
the presenter closer to their audience. It implies that the speaker is not reading off a script but
actually talking to the audience. It creates the illusion that they are participating in a conversation
rather than being talked at, which may cause them to become detached from the speaker. A more
relaxed conversational tone builds rapport and will go a long way towards maintaining the attention
of the room. When reading written text the reader is able to go at their own pace, look up certain
words or re–read a sentence. When listening to spoken word this is not possible. As Jay and Jay
(2004) point out, "...for writing for that sort of communication you have to think in new ways about
clarity and lucidity: in a presentation you not only have to present all the relevant information
clearly, you also have to present it in the best order for instant assimilation (p.41)." A good
presentation is one which fulfils its brief, whether that be to entertain, inform or persuade. There are
many different ways in which these objectives can be achieved but

Ted Talk Essay
When it comes to choice it always seems to be a love hate relationship: we hate making them, but
we can't live without them. Anyone can all look back to a time in our lives where they wish
someone could just pick for us, or times when we wish there were more to choose from. All
Americans have many choices, and it is such a part of our daily lives that we don't even realize it.
Barry Schwartz and Sheena Iyengar's TED talks bring up interesting ideas about choice, how people
deal with them and their affects. They both state that although choice is good, it can also have
negative effects. Schwartz explains what most people believe and experience with choice, while
Iyengar shows cultural differences in choice making. Both Schwartz and Iyengar...show more

The second is the more choices the more likely that the best choice can be made, and the third
assumption is that you should never say no to choice. Iyengard evaluates these three assumptions
with various studies where one group is American and the other is another culture. Her studies
help understand why and how Americans make choices in comparison to the rest of the world.
Without doubt, Iyengard's studies and analysis on choice is interesting but Schwartz's was
clearer because it easily communicated the message that was more applicable to the public.
Choices are an important part of everyone's lives and the choices we make can reflex who we are
as individuals. Choice and the ability to choose are excellent and can represent a sense of
freedom. Schwartz's and Iyengard's analysis on choice focused on the effects of choice in people
and how people react and deal with it. Schwartz's Official Dogma and explanation of how
Americans act in response to choice making is the most relatable to individuals and clearly chows
the consequences of too much choice. His analysis can assist to people realize that maybe because
we have more choice doesn't necessarily mean we will make us happier or the best decision will be
made. Understanding the consequences of too much choice can possibly make individuals improve
the negative effects it can have and make us happier with our
