Pit Bulls Be Banned, And Euthanized
Every day in the United States, there are pit bulls be banned, and euthanized. Dog Shelters are overfilled with pit bulls. There are approximately 937
cities in the united states that has some sort of a Breed Restriction legislation. To me this is absurd! People are getting these dogs and are training
them to fight. It 's so wrong. Pit bulls are so discriminated against now because how people are training these dogs to fight. Every time I hear about a
dog fight or seeing a pit bull chained up makes me really upset. I 'm tired of it. How would those people feel if they were treated like that? I personally
love Pit bulls, but some people don 't. I personally own a brindle pit bull named Boosie. I always say how a dog turns out depends on their owner. I had
my dog ever since he was a puppy, and I raised him very well. He 's so sweet and loving. I don 't see how people would want to ban pit bulls?
Pit bulls have a lot of history. Pit bulls been bred for human companionship, and since the 1900s, they have been bred for conformation showing as
well. Pit bulls have been used as farm dogs, family dogs, military mascots, and all–purpose companions. In England, the Staffie Bull is known as the
"The Nanny Dog" or "The Children's Nursemaid" because of their placid and nurturing demeanor toward children. They say "Regardless of how
gentle your dog is, all dogs of any breed should never be left alone unsupervised with children".Throughout their history in America, pit bull dogs have

If you're thinking about owning a Pit Bull terrier, it is important to understand the characteristics of the breed as well as your current lifestyle. Caring
for a Pit Bull is a long–term commitment that needs to be taken seriously, not just a simple hobby that you participate in when time permits.
Unfortunately it is very difficult for many dogs to find a second home in the event that their owners "change their minds" and decide they don't want a
dog after all. The situation is even worse for Pit Bulls due to their reputation in today's society.
Do you have the time and the energy to commit to a high energy breed such as a Pit Bull? Pit Bull terriers have very high exercise requirements and are
happiest when they get plenty of play time.

Pit Bull Stereotypes
Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that all people would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Well, I have a
dream that all dogs will be judged by their integrity and not by their outward appearance. Unfortunately, pit bulls have suffered for many years because
people continue to believe the faulty stereotype that all pit bulls are aggressive. The truth is many individuals aren't informed about pit bulls. Many
people believe the pit bull is a specific dog, but the pit bull describes different dogs including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire
Terrier,Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and American Bully as stated by the Villalobos Rescue Center. A typical pit bull is strong, athletic,... Show more

Pit bulls are amazing family additions, and they are truly loving and protective. According to researchers at the Institute for Animal Welfare and
Behavior pit bulls are harmless. The test results of 415 dogs were analyzed. The test consisted of a veterinary examination; a learning test; situations of
dog–human, dog–environment, and dog–dog contact; and obedience. Escalation in aggressive behavior was scored using a scale of 1–7. The results
show no indication of dangerousness in specific breeds, so pit bulls are just as innocent as the common golden retriever (Schalke et al. 97–103).
Another study by a Georgia–based group called the American Temperament Test Society has put twenty
–five thousand dogs through a ten–part
standardized drill designed to assess a dog's stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness in the company of people. A handler takes a dog on a
six–foot lead and judges its reaction to stimuli such as gunshots, an umbrella opening, and a weirdly dressed stranger approaching in a threatening way.
Eighty–four per cent of the pit bulls that have been given the test have passed, which ranks pit bulls ahead of beagles, Airedales, bearded collies, and
all but one variety of dachshund (Gladwell 26–28). Studies have proven that pit bulls are loving, friendly pets if they are treated right. My sister's two

There are various amounts of breeds of dogs that get put down at pounds because of their breeds. Dog breeds still get discriminated today. Dog
breeds, such as Pit Bulls, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, Great Danes, Perro de Presa Canario, Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, German

The problem is people, not pit bulls! Pit bulls are constantly misunderstood as violent,
aggressive fighting machines but this is far from the truth. Just like humans, dogs mimic what
they have been taught. This is no different for the pit bull breed. They need to be treated with
compassion and shown right from wrong. If we train any animal to be spiteful fighters that is
exactly the attitude they will reflect because all animals are obedient to their owners.
Pit bulls have had a long history varying from being considered nanny dogs to the most
hated breed in America. Back in the 1800's, it has been documented that pit bulls were used as
caretakers for infants while parents were out to work. A lot of this information has been... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shelters and pit bull rescues should come together and add a more positive outlook for these noble companions. Some of the positivity they should put

Pit bulls should be properly bred, trained, and managed by owners to prevent attacks.
Many statistics and surveys have shown pits to be one of the most populated dogs in the United
States with numbers in the millions. Unfortunately, a great portion of this dog population are

Because there are no witnesses how Goochland, Virginia, resident Bethany Lynn Stephens died, her two dogs are the suspects in her death. At a news
conference on Friday, investigators disclosed that when Bethany's father searched for her in an area she often goes, he found her two dogs guarding
something.
He thought it was an animal carcass, but he found out it was his daughter's body. Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew said that Bethany was
apparently mauled by her two pit bulls whose combined weight was two times that of Bethany who was just about 100 pounds and stood at 5 foot and
1 inch.
Grisly mauling
Even if a friend of Bethany doubted the police theory, Agnew said that the dogs have something to do with her death. It placed once more a stigma on
the dog breed after other cases involved Pit Bull attacks on people, including their owners.
Among the evidence that the investigators cited why they believe that it was the two dogs that mauled the woman were defensive wounds on the hands
and arms of 22–year–old Bethany. Agnew said that it indicated she was attacked while alive. He said she apparently fell to the ground after theattack,
lost consciousness, and the Pit Bulls mauled her to death.
Agnew pointed out that there were no strangulation marks on Bethany, but she had puncture wounds in the skull. The evidence made the probers rule
out homicide. However, Barbara Norris, a friend of Bethany, questioned the police theory because the victims raised the two dogs as

The pit bull dogs are outlawed in Miami Dade County because of the inbred susceptibility to attack other animals, and because of the danger posed to
humans. Miami Dade County code states "The unique history, nature and characteristics of pit bull dogs have been determined to require the special
regulations and provisions contained within this article which the County Commission hereby finds reasonable and necessary." ( Miami Dade County,
2003)
One stereo type of pit bulls is that they are mean and vicious. Pit bulls are no more vicious than golden retrievers, beagles or other popular dogs. "In
a recent study of 122 dog breeds by the American Temperament Testing Association, Pit bulls achieved a passing rate of 81.7%. That's good or
better than beagles (78.7%), and golden retrievers (81.7%). In these tests dogs are put through a series of confrontational situations." (Coile, 2001)
Any sign of panic or aggression leads to failure of the test. The achievement of the pit bull dog in this study disproves once and for all the old tired
belief that pit bulls are inherently aggressive to people. Like any breed of dog, a healthy pit bull that is properly raised will remain loving and friendly.
There are other myths that just horrify people about pit bulls. One myth is about the ability of a pit bull to lock its jaws on something and not let go.
The jaws of a pit bull are built just as any other dog's jaw. There's no enzyme, no special mechanism

Why Are Pit Bulls Bad
Why Pit Bulls Are Not a Threat As Caesar Millan thoughtfully quoted, "In the 70's, they blamed Dobermans. In the 80's, they blamed German
Shepherds. In the 90's, they blamed the Rottweiler. Now, they blame the Pit Bull." All of these instances were sparked by the a danger of a single
story. Many people will believe anything negative that they hear. A product could have thousands of great reviews, but the one negative comment will
stick out. The same is true for the Pit Bull breed. Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes should be allowed to be kept in non–abusive homes as pets. Pit Bulls in
today's world have a reputation of being dangerous fighting dogs. Noting this, many courts have made appeals to raise the fee for owning one or a
cross–breed. In Ireland, a dog deemed as a Pit Bull was put down, though it never inflicted harm on any person or dog. It was executed simply
because it was a Pit Bull. Imagine your best friend being ripped away from you and slaughtered simply because of the way they look. With people,
we call this a horrible act of genocide, but is it different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The same people believe that they are naturally aggressive and therefore unsafe. Pit Bulls have been known to "snap" and go on killing sprees, or
"lock their jaws" when they bite. The truth is that Pit Bulls are only dangerous if they are trained to be that way. If an owner trains a dog to fight
other dogs, it should be the owner who is punished. Why would a gun be convicted of a murder? As for the issue of Pit Bulls locking their jaws,
this is nothing more than a fabricated myth. Pit Bulls' jaws aren't even as powerful as other breeds' such as the Mastiff. However, jaw strength is of
no importance if the Pit Bull is not trained to fight. Lastly, the issue of Pit Bulls "snapping", well, this is the case of all breeds who were originally
bred to be fighters, like the Akita Inu, the Kerry Blue Terrier, and yes– the Shar

Have you ever been told that you can't own your dog because of its breed? Most people haven't simple because most people don't own a Pit Bull. Pit
Bulls have been made illegal to own in some cities just because of their breed. They are view as "Dangerous" or "Bad" just because of some people
who raised theirs wrong. People used to use them in dog fighting and people today shouldn't have to get rid of their loved family pet because other
people don't like the idea of a Pit being in their town. Pit Bulls shouldn't be illegal to own in any city or state. They can be and are great dogs as long
as they are raised right. In some cities, pit bulls are illegal to own, and this isn't fair because Pit Bulls are a good breed of dog, as long as they are
treated okay. For example, lets say you own a Husky; you won't be told by the city that you can't own that dog, but lets say you own a pit bull. It
becomes the other way around. Depending on the city, you won't be allowed to have your dog. Lets say someone raises a Dalmatian. If they abuse
it, or make it fight, that dog will be vicious to anyone just like any other breed of dog would. If you raise the Dalmatian right, and don't abuse it or

Pit Bull Liability Research
Pit bulls are a breed of dog that are notoriously labeled as being dangerous and as having a propensity to attack without warning. Statistics gathered
from 2005 through 2015 found that Pit bulls accounted for 64.4 percent, or 232, of the 360 deaths of Americans suffered due to dog bite injuries, while
only making up about 6.6 percent of the total U.S. dog population. Due to these statistics, there are many who defend enacting statutes that specifically
point to incidents involving these dogs needing strict liability to protect third parties.
The Maryland Court of Appeals, for example, held in Tracey v. Solesky (2012) that owners and landlords are liable for injuries caused by pit bulls and
cross–bred pit bull mixes, describing them as "inherently dangerous." The judgment of this court ruling meant that it was no longer necessary to
prove that a pit bull who attacks a person or that pit bulls in general are dangerous; all pit bull owners are automatically held to a strict liability
standard under Maryland law. This case established a new standard of liability for a specific breed of dog due to what some would argue is their
aggressive and vicious nature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, even if the owner of a wild animal takes significant measures to protect others from being harmed by their pet, they are still held
responsible for any injuries that do occur. This is due to the fact that wild animals cannot be tamed and it is assumed that all wild animals naturally
have vicious tendencies. Strict liability laws in regards to possessors of wild animals exist because these kinds of animals are more dangerous than
domestic animals are. A tiger that lives in an individual's house brings a higher degree of risk than, for example, a house cat would

don't know is pit bulls are some of the easiest, loving dogs to have. When given an appropriate amount of time, love and compassion, Pit Bulls can be a
joy for you and the family to raise.
Pit bull puppies are similar to other puppies when it comes to training. Pit bull pups need to be trained at about eight weeks old. Being trained at a

These are just a few of the many ways that American Pit Bull Terriers are loyal to their owners as well as considered heroes among many people.
When you mention the words Pit Bull, many times people immediately begin talking about the statistics of them attacking other people as well as other
dogs. A survey was conducted in 2009 of attack percentages of Pit Bulls compared to other breeds such as Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Chows.
Among this survey, the Pit Bull breed scored the lowest with a 0.00125 and the highest being the Rottweiler with a score of 0.00433 (https:/
/defendpitbulls.com/pit–bull–attack–statistics/). On the website Dogsbite.org, it states that Pit–Bulls are the leading culprit in dog attacks, this is just a
broad statistic which does not adequately explain whether these attacks were of dogs which were used in illegal dog fighting rings or whether they
were just your average house pet. Many times when surveys are conducted dealing with dog temperaments and aggressiveness, Pit Bulls are the main
breed that is done incorrectly. I say this because a Pit Bull is not actually a breed, but a label given by the Breed Specific Legislation, BLU, to
describe many breeds such as: the American Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier,Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier,

Devastated owners had their animals confiscated and killed without warning.
In Tijeras, New Mexico, the ban was so strictly enforced that animal control officers were allowed to kill any Pit Bull seen on sight without
compensation to the owner. Due to their misunderstood reputation, people made rash decisions that affected the lives of many loving Pit Bulls that
never stood a chance. They have even become a "liability" due to their "overly violent" personalities and because of this have been banned from many
areas in the United States.
One thing that frightens people the most is a Pit Bulls jaw. While they do have one of the strongest jaws, it is not the strongest. Dr. I. Lerh Brisbin, of
the University of Georgia, states,
"The few studies, which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of Pit Bulls show, that, in proportion to their size, their
jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any [other] breed of dog. There is absolutely not evidence for the
existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier."
There is no evidence to prove that Pit Bulls have unique jaws or any lethal "lockjaw". The "lockjaw" method is learned through training, it is not a
special killing tool, and once again the owner creates this issue for the breed. Pit Bulls are

Pit Bulls Should Be Banned Essay
Since the 1980's, there's been a high level of concern among the general public
with regard to breed–specific aggression in Pit Bulls. The reasons behind this backlash
against Pit Bulls are threefold; longitudinal studies beginning in the 1970's demonstrated
that unprovoked canine attacks were carried out by Pit Bulls at a level disproportionate to
their population, misconceptions about their aggressive nature made them attractive pets
to owners who were more likely to raise aggressive dogs, and media sensationalism in the
form of misleading coverage of Pit Bull attacks further reinforced their perception as an
aggressive breed in the eyes of the public. As a result, many states have enacted breed–

A Pit Bull Is The Best Nanny Any Child
A Pit Bull is the best nanny any child can have" are words that Mayor Denis Coderre could not bear to hear after introducing a bylaw regarding
breed specific legislation, commonly shortened to BSL, on September 27 2016. The bylaw comes on the heels of an incident that has taken place in
June, where a woman in her fifties was mauled to death by what the city believes to be Pit Bull–it is important to note that a DNA test has yet to
confirm this, however–and in response, the mayor opted not to condemn the owner of the dog but rather an entire breed. While the decision has been
made in an effort to reinforce public safety, Mayor Coderre has chosen to not get to the root of the biting problem, instead he simply covered up a
bigger problem by not holding owners accountable, therefore setting the new bylaw up for failure. The overall bias regarding the correlation
between dog bites and breeds, the underlying causes which prompt a dog to bite, a veterinarian's right of not putting a dog down solely based on
appearances and the SPCA's threat to end all their canine services as well as their intent to sue the city are more than enough evidence to suggest that a
different route ought to be taken in order to lower dog–bite statistics.
First of all, bias in relation with dog–bite statistics is a growing phenomenon, and given that many record go off of what bite victims say in regards to
breeds, there is room for mistakes to be made. Zak George, former presenter of the TV show

Why Do People Be Allowed To Keep Pit Bulls
Should People Be Allowed To Keep Pit–Bulls?
By Seven S. Mitchell
Now what do you think when you hear the name "Pit–Bull"? The Pit–Bull is a mixed breed of dog, mixed with Terrier and Mastiff dog types. Also,
known as "Pit" Yankee Terrier, Rebel Terrier and Staffordshire FightingDog. Some may say that Pit–Bulls are great pets to have and like many other
animals that become very emotionally connected with their owners and families. However, others think that Pit–Bull are violent monsters that know
only one thing which is to attack. I know the good side of Pit–Bulls through my own experience with this caring breed. I am here to explain to you how
Pit–Bulls aren't the demons that some may claim they are.
Pit–Bulls don't attack for no reason.
Now most people demonize Pits for their history of attacks on people. Even though when this happens many reports of these terrifying acts just may
lack some important information. For example, a woman was bitten by a pit but the thing is the Pit was unconscious. When the woman found the
unconscious dog she tried reaching in the dogs mouth to check the pulse when the bite took place. So, think about it, was this information important to
know to come to a fair conclusion? Yes, without the extra information like that, many people mistake the way this... Show more content on

The Misconceptions about Pit Bull Aggression.
"Pit Bulls are beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of a man without the vices". ("A quote

Pit Bulls have a strong, fierce appearance they are aggressive. One reason Pit Bulls are put out on the street is because some places have banned
ownership of them. People who use Pit Bulls in these illegal dog fights torture and use them as bait. Even though individuals believe negatively about

Pit bulls are a Misunderstood Breed
Pit bulls are the most misunderstood dog breeds in the world. When people hear the word pit bull they automatically think of dogs fighting and
attacking. When people say "pit bull" they're usually referring to a range of breeds and, often, a mixed–breed dog. (Lawrence, C Louisville Magazine
Feb 2007) People think they are a very dangerous breed of dog. Because of this, some areas do not allow pit bulls and breeds like them. Pit bulls are

Banning a breed, which the technical words are breed specific legislation, is not a good idea. Putting a ban on pit bulls is a less than great idea

Pit Bulls What do you think of when you hear aggressive breed or dangerous dog? Pit Bulls have been given the label of an "aggressive breed" or
"dangerous dog." A dangerous dog is one who inflicts serious injury, or poses an imminent threat of serious aggression toward people or other
animals. We do not pay attention to other breeds when we think of dangerous dogs. We pay attention to the ones that look the most threatening, like
Pit Bulls. Pit bulls should not be labeled an aggressive breed because an animal's environment can affect how the act towards other dogs and people,
other breeds can have more or the same aggressive level as Pit Bulls, abuse is the main factor in all animal aggression and the way dogs are trained can

One reason a dog may become aggressive is their living arrangements. Living indoors compared to living outdoors affects their behavior greatly
because a dog who lives indoors tends to have more positive socialization than a dog who lives outdoors (The Star). The most aggressive dog can
be a dog who transitions from living indoors and outdoors. Another reason a dog can become aggressive is the amount of positive socialization the
dog gets (The Star). Their living arrangements affects this as well, but so does the type of socialization a person gives to the dog. A dog that has
negative or very little socialization may not know what to do in a positive social situation and may become aggressive towards the people in the
situation. A dog that has lots of positive socialization tends to have more people skills and is likely to be more friendly to new people and other
animals (The Star). Attitude is another cause of animal aggression. When people give positive attitudes towards animals, the animals tend to give a
positive attitude or behavior back. When someone has a negative attitude towards an animal or to something they are protective of, like a mom's
puppies, they tend to protect themselves or others by being aggressive (The Star). Also, when a dog feels he or she is in danger, they will tend to take
an aggressive action to protect themselves. It does not matter if the person causing any danger is friend or foe (ASPCA Aggression). The environment
of the animal matters because it can greatly affect their aggression

Pitbulls : The Characteristics Of Pit Bulls
I believe pit bulls are not a vicious breed. Pit bulls are known to be obedient, intelligent, affectionate, loyal, courageous, and friendly, along with

They would take their dog to an "arena" and two dogs would fight. The last dog standing won, and the owner got money for it. To do make the dog
aggressive, they would abuse the dog, burning them, clipping their ears in an unsafe way, and beating them. After the 1900s, people started treating pit
bulls progressively worse. The media started over exaggerating pit bull "attacks", not stating in the reports that almost always the dog was being
abused and finally attacked to defend themselves. In reality, any dog can cause damage to a human if they're upset enough. Although pit bulls are
more likely to bite and hold, other than bite and release then attack several other times, they do not have special "locking jaws". If a pit bull bites
you, you can still remove the dog if needed. All dogs bite, and all dogs will protect themselves. Does this make all dogs vicious? No.What you should
be worried about is protecting these animals from the cruel treatment they're still receiving.
Shelters put down pit bulls every day, thousands of them, because the media has deemed them vicious. Shelters believe that no one would want such a
monster, so why should they keep them when that space could be used for a better dog? Animal violence in general is unacceptable, and we should not
blame any animal more than another for protecting themselves.

The Issue Of Pit Bulls
Dogs seem to be one of the most common and beloved pets in our society. Many even consider their dog to be a family member. One thing that is
especially great about dogs is that there are many different breeds of dogs out there that have different characteristics, and traits. Which gives
people the option to choose the type of dog that is right for them, but one breed in particular has been banned in various places, and discriminated
against that breed being pit bulls. Breed specific legislation targets pit bulls based on misconceptions, appearance, and poor knowledge about the
breed. Breed Specific Legislation and discrimination in general are not justifiable against pit bulls. Pit bulls have not always been viewed as the
vicious killer. For instance, in the 1970s the concern was over German Shepherds, and in the 1980s, Doberman pinschers were considered as public
and government concern (Dana M). Which just goes to show that people get concerned, but move on when they realize there is nothing to be
concerned about. Pit bulls were actually considered to be the family dog in the 1900s, and were even nicknamed the "nanny dogs for children"
because of the breed's friendly and loyal nature (Holland). Pit–bulls even appeared up in popular motion pictures such as "our gang" and, "buster
brown" (Bastian). In the 80s is where pit bulls started to get a bad rap because of their association with dog fighting, gangs, and drug dealers (Bastian).

Pit Bull: Differences Between Mona And Leo
Usually when you think about the different breeds of dogs there are, they all merge together; you don't think about the different types of ears they
have, or different types of silly smiles they have. Now when you think about differences between a pit bull and a pug, you can come to the conclusion
that there are many contrasting features. The very many differences between these two types of dog breeds are exactly what I think about when I look
at my pitbull, Mona, and my pug, Leo. Although there are many differences between Mona and Leo, the ones that are the most prominent are their
looks, personalities, and interests. Unless someone has never seen a pitbull or a pug, they can pretty much see that they are quite the opposite. It is
very easy to tell they are different but not many people can list the variances in their appearance. One of the first things that you notice when looking
specifically at my dogs is that Mona has a deep black colored fur coat, and Leo has a light caramel brown fur coat. Another characteristic of their fur is
that Mona has very thick dense hair that is short, and Leo have medium length thin hair. Above all else, the most notable feature is their snouts.

Pugs and pitbulls have quite the opposite personas and this is another thing that lays true between Mona and Leo. Mona, for starters, is more active
than most dogs, and Leo is lazier than most. This is not very shocking because that is how their breeds are, but what is surprising is that Mona is calm
while Leo is more playful. This may seem like a contradiction but it is not. A dog can be inactive while remaining playful. Anotherdifference that Mona
and Leo have in their temperaments is that Mona is more friendly with dogs, while Leo is more human friendly. And unless you have owned both a
pitbull and a pug these differences in their personalities are surprising, but to

Pit bulls American Staffordshire Terriers (Am Staffs) and American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs) are the most commonly known dogs for their

was created to address the more general breeds of dogs that have similar looks and characteristics. The people who already have a strong dislike for
pit bulls will automatically imagine a vicious, volatile, and unfriendly animal. The popular thought for pit bulls is that they were born killers and

Undoubtedly, pit bulls can be trained like a vicious attacker, but so can any other dog who is agile and raised to. Violence may have been there
since the beginning, but that does not mean pit bulls cannot be loving creatures. Even though the origin of pit bulls came from dog fighting, it
does not completely stop the chances of the animal being friendly in any way. While it is agreed that they can be dangerous when aggressive, it
does not mean pit bulls are a lost cause. The real issue is the simple fact that all pit bulls should not be lumped into a category of vicious. While it
may be true that they are already genetically made to be a "fight" dog, it does not mean that is all they can amount to. History shows pit bulls were
bred to be more agile and have a more friendly personality compared to when they first began as only fighting for entertainment. Pit bulls can be as
caring as they can be aggressive, it all depends on the way they were brought up and how they were taught to handle situations. Like any other species,

The Misconceptions Of Pit Bulls And Pitbulls
The Bullied Bullies When people think of loyal dogs with a friendly demeanor, puppy–like face, and a wagging tail, they typically would imagine a
Golden Retriever or a Labrador Retriever. However, out of these people, many of them would not expect a Pit Bull to fit into the same categories.
Pit bulls are the most bred dogs in America, and yet, "one million Pit Bulls are euthanized every year," and "only one in 600 Pit Bulls born will ever
find a loving home" ("Pit Bulls and Euthanasia Rates"). This is a result of misconceptions about Pit Bulls that millions of people today still believe. A
widely believed misconception about the term "Pit Bull" is that it is an actual dog breed. However, this is false, and it is simply a category for different
dog breeds with similar characteristics, such as the American Staffordshire, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Bull Terrier, theStaffordshire Bull Terrier,
the American Bulldog, and any mixes between these breeds. These breeds all came from the breeding of English Terriers and English Bulldogs to
obtain desired sizes and characteristics. Most Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes are "strong, powerful dogs with broad, brick–like heads and muscular
bodies" ("About Dog Breeds: Pit Bull") and have a large variety of different fur colors. Because of their strength and loyalty, Pit Bulls have been
taken advantage of by people who use them for fighting and money; when dog fighting rings are broken up, usually word spreads and causes many

Gladwell concludes that pit bulls often find themselves in tragic situations, where the preconceived notions they are born with lead to their
mistreatment and abuse.
Gladwell also touches on the idea of stable and unstable generalizations that not only involve dogs, but also other groups of humans as well. For a
while, generalizations that D.E.A. agents made in attempting to identify and catch potential terrorists and drug smugglers in airports were so flawed
and based on unstable assumptions (such as targeting all Arab and Pakistani passengers, as if they were the only potential terrorists solely based on
their ethnicity) that the D.E.A. almost always profiled the wrong person, and missed out on capturing the true criminals. When "the act of
generalizing... changes the basis of the generalization," it is necessary for those patrolling to both adapt to these changes and to get rid of the
generalizations they had been making in the first place, in order to clean up their acts (Gladwell).
Many of the sentiments that Gladwell speaks about has been echoed recently in the news about the snap judgments that people make about other
groups of people, based on generalizations that have been made about them. The racial divisiveness of our country has been a topic of thought recently,

B. It was in the 1980s when the perception of the pit bull was smeared. 1. Regardless of being illegal in all fifty states, dog fighting made a
comeback and the pit bull was the dog of choice. 2. They were also the preferred "guard dog" for big time drug dealers and gangs. C. But why does
this irresponsibility fall on the breed? Humans have bestowed this demeanor upon them, yet the dogs are the ones receiving the repercussions. 1.
The pit bull is well known for its loyalty and desire to please. They continually strive to exceed expectations that are set for them, which is one of
the biggest reasons they are preferred as a fighting dog; they will not give up. They will fight for the attention and praise of their owner. 2. Pit bulls
are loving, tender, faithful, and they are protective over the families they belong to. We, as owners and pet lovers, need to take the steps to ensure the
image of this breed is restored; We need to speak up for the underdog.

The Death Of Pit Bulls

INTRODUCTION "In the late 2014, Animals 24–7, a group that tracks shelter killings, estimated that of the 1.3 million shelter dogs projected for
euthanasia in 2014, pit bulls accounted for 56%. This is true despite the fact that pit bulls only make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog
population" (dogsbite.org). If someone were to walk into an animal shelter and see several pit bulls and walk in again a month later about half of
them would be gone to lethal injection. Because people are scared of them, they are not properly cared for and eventually become to much to
handle and thrown into a shelter. If a mother was to not care for her child, that child would eventually spaz out and do whatever it wants, which in
most cases is what happens to pit bulls. Although there is a huge stereotype about pit bulls, they can actually be very well behaved and friendly if
they are trained and cared for just like any other dog. HISTORY of PIT VS PIT / PITBULL OWNERS Today 's pitbull is a descendant of the

It is often found that if Pit Bulls are put into bad situations, then that may be reflected on how a dog reacts to its environment. Pit Bulls were
original a cross breed between Bulldog and Terrier. This combination made a dog that was agile and strong. Due to Pit Bulls having these favored
characteristics, these dogs were often used as hunting dogs, as well as for illegal dog fighting. Because of this, people believe that the nature of
these dogs is to be aggressive and bite (Liz 18). The statistics show pit bulls as dogs that may be dangerous but often they don't show different
factors that may affect the dog's behaviors ("Dog bite prevention" 1733). Many things may lead to a higher chance of aggression, like whether the
dog has been spayed or neutered, if it was abused, if it lived in bad living conditions, if its sole purpose was to fight, etc ("Position Statement"). The
ASPCA argues, "In Prince George's County, Maryland, where Pit Bull Terriers are banned, the Animal Management Division reports that 80
percent of the approximately 500 to 600 animals seized and killed by animal control every year under the ban are "nice, family dogs"'(qtd. In

Why Are Pit Bulls Banned
Pit Bulls are one of the most misunderstood dogs in society. People are afraid of them because of the stories they have heard or seen and they tend to
flinch when they hear the words 'pit bull'. Pit Bulls are discriminated against because of what they are and how people portray them to be. Because of
this, Pit Bulls are paying the price for something they have no fault in. Pit Bull is not actually a breed. "The legal definition of a pit bull is a class of

other pure bred or mixed breed dog that is a combination of these dogs (DogsBite, Pit bull FAQ)." Even though these breeds may be classified ... Show

They were bred for entertainment through fighting, but also for companionship as family pets. Their history has brought turmoil and hate against

result is them being fearful of Pit Bulls and not wanting to have anything to do with them. They take these stories from the media about a Pit Bull
attack and assume all Pit Bulls are vicious and will attack people. This is how the stereotypes come about. However, some people work to change
the perception of Pit Bulls, like the owners of Johnny and Leo. They go and reach out to people, from elders to children, who get to know the dog
as an individual and not as society has perceived them to be. Each dog, no matter a Pit Bull or not, is his own. Each one has his own personality,

They can smash these dog toys called kongs with their jaws. I can't even smash one by stepping on it. They are so strong that you can hang a rope

The third characteristic of a good dog is courage. Courage is an important characteristic of a good dog because they are more play full and fun to be

a car he will want to sit on the driver's lap. The vet told me that this is a sign of dominance in dogs. Even

Pit Bulls Be Banned, And Euthanized

  • 1. Pit Bulls Be Banned, And Euthanized Every day in the United States, there are pit bulls be banned, and euthanized. Dog Shelters are overfilled with pit bulls. There are approximately 937 cities in the united states that has some sort of a Breed Restriction legislation. To me this is absurd! People are getting these dogs and are training them to fight. It 's so wrong. Pit bulls are so discriminated against now because how people are training these dogs to fight. Every time I hear about a dog fight or seeing a pit bull chained up makes me really upset. I 'm tired of it. How would those people feel if they were treated like that? I personally love Pit bulls, but some people don 't. I personally own a brindle pit bull named Boosie. I always say how a dog turns out depends on their owner. I had my dog ever since he was a puppy, and I raised him very well. He 's so sweet and loving. I don 't see how people would want to ban pit bulls? Pit bulls have a lot of history. Pit bulls been bred for human companionship, and since the 1900s, they have been bred for conformation showing as well. Pit bulls have been used as farm dogs, family dogs, military mascots, and all–purpose companions. In England, the Staffie Bull is known as the "The Nanny Dog" or "The Children's Nursemaid" because of their placid and nurturing demeanor toward children. They say "Regardless of how gentle your dog is, all dogs of any breed should never be left alone unsupervised with children".Throughout their history in America, pit bull dogs have ... • 2. Research Paper On Pit Bull Terrier If you're thinking about owning a Pit Bull terrier, it is important to understand the characteristics of the breed as well as your current lifestyle. Caring for a Pit Bull is a long–term commitment that needs to be taken seriously, not just a simple hobby that you participate in when time permits. Unfortunately it is very difficult for many dogs to find a second home in the event that their owners "change their minds" and decide they don't want a dog after all. The situation is even worse for Pit Bulls due to their reputation in today's society. Do you have the time and the energy to commit to a high energy breed such as a Pit Bull? Pit Bull terriers have very high exercise requirements and are happiest when they get plenty of play time. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pit Bull Stereotypes Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that all people would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Well, I have a dream that all dogs will be judged by their integrity and not by their outward appearance. Unfortunately, pit bulls have suffered for many years because people continue to believe the faulty stereotype that all pit bulls are aggressive. The truth is many individuals aren't informed about pit bulls. Many people believe the pit bull is a specific dog, but the pit bull describes different dogs including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier,Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and American Bully as stated by the Villalobos Rescue Center. A typical pit bull is strong, athletic,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pit bulls are amazing family additions, and they are truly loving and protective. According to researchers at the Institute for Animal Welfare and Behavior pit bulls are harmless. The test results of 415 dogs were analyzed. The test consisted of a veterinary examination; a learning test; situations of dog–human, dog–environment, and dog–dog contact; and obedience. Escalation in aggressive behavior was scored using a scale of 1–7. The results show no indication of dangerousness in specific breeds, so pit bulls are just as innocent as the common golden retriever (Schalke et al. 97–103). Another study by a Georgia–based group called the American Temperament Test Society has put twenty –five thousand dogs through a ten–part standardized drill designed to assess a dog's stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness in the company of people. A handler takes a dog on a six–foot lead and judges its reaction to stimuli such as gunshots, an umbrella opening, and a weirdly dressed stranger approaching in a threatening way. Eighty–four per cent of the pit bulls that have been given the test have passed, which ranks pit bulls ahead of beagles, Airedales, bearded collies, and all but one variety of dachshund (Gladwell 26–28). Studies have proven that pit bulls are loving, friendly pets if they are treated right. My sister's two pit bulls live in her household as well her toddler, Camden. Her son ... Dog breeds, such as Pit Bulls, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, Great Danes, Perro de Presa Canario, Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, and Wolf Hybrids (wolf dogs) all get discriminated today.Dog discrimination is from attacks the dogs are involved in. Pit Bulls are known for being bred for dog fights and the involvement in dog attacks. They get discriminated daily. At the pound, Pit Bulls are put down annually. • 5. Persuasive Essay On Pit Bulls The problem is people, not pit bulls! Pit bulls are constantly misunderstood as violent, aggressive fighting machines but this is far from the truth. Just like humans, dogs mimic what they have been taught. This is no different for the pit bull breed. They need to be treated with compassion and shown right from wrong. If we train any animal to be spiteful fighters that is exactly the attitude they will reflect because all animals are obedient to their owners. Pit bulls have had a long history varying from being considered nanny dogs to the most hated breed in America. Back in the 1800's, it has been documented that pit bulls were used as caretakers for infants while parents were out to work. A lot of this information has been... Some of the positivity they should put out includes the following: They help kids become stronger readers because many kids with reading disabilities won't read to an adult but they will read to a dog, they are seizure watch dogs, diabetic alert dogs, comfort nursing home residents and offer a plethora of services to human counterparts (Sara K Enos 2). Pit bulls should be properly bred, trained, and managed by owners to prevent attacks. Many statistics and surveys have shown pits to be one of the most populated dogs in the United States with numbers in the millions. Unfortunately, a great portion of this dog population are strays. With this many pit bulls roaming the streets wouldn't we hear of way more fatal attacks

Several cases are frequently carried out by different dog breeds but if police can't identify them specifically officers and media will just claim them to be some type of pit bull mixed breed. • 7. Persuasive Essay On Pit Bulls Because there are no witnesses how Goochland, Virginia, resident Bethany Lynn Stephens died, her two dogs are the suspects in her death. At a news conference on Friday, investigators disclosed that when Bethany's father searched for her in an area she often goes, he found her two dogs guarding something. He thought it was an animal carcass, but he found out it was his daughter's body. Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew said that Bethany was apparently mauled by her two pit bulls whose combined weight was two times that of Bethany who was just about 100 pounds and stood at 5 foot and 1 inch. Grisly mauling Even if a friend of Bethany doubted the police theory, Agnew said that the dogs have something to do with her death. It placed once more a stigma on the dog breed after other cases involved Pit Bull attacks on people, including their owners. Among the evidence that the investigators cited why they believe that it was the two dogs that mauled the woman were defensive wounds on the hands and arms of 22–year–old Bethany. Agnew said that it indicated she was attacked while alive. He said she apparently fell to the ground after theattack, lost consciousness, and the Pit Bulls mauled her to death. Agnew pointed out that there were no strangulation marks on Bethany, but she had puncture wounds in the skull. The evidence made the probers rule out homicide. However, Barbara Norris, a friend of Bethany, questioned the police theory because the victims raised the two dogs as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The pit bull dogs are outlawed in Miami Dade County because of the inbred susceptibility to attack other animals, and because of the danger posed to humans. Miami Dade County code states "The unique history, nature and characteristics of pit bull dogs have been determined to require the special regulations and provisions contained within this article which the County Commission hereby finds reasonable and necessary." ( Miami Dade County, 2003) One stereo type of pit bulls is that they are mean and vicious. Pit bulls are no more vicious than golden retrievers, beagles or other popular dogs. "In a recent study of 122 dog breeds by the American Temperament Testing Association, Pit bulls achieved a passing rate of 81.7%. That's good or better than beagles (78.7%), and golden retrievers (81.7%). In these tests dogs are put through a series of confrontational situations." (Coile, 2001) Any sign of panic or aggression leads to failure of the test. The achievement of the pit bull dog in this study disproves once and for all the old tired belief that pit bulls are inherently aggressive to people.

  • 10. Why Are Pit Bulls Bad Why Pit Bulls Are Not a Threat As Caesar Millan thoughtfully quoted, "In the 70's, they blamed Dobermans. In the 80's, they blamed German Shepherds. In the 90's, they blamed the Rottweiler. Now, they blame the Pit Bull." All of these instances were sparked by the a danger of a single story. Many people will believe anything negative that they hear. A product could have thousands of great reviews, but the one negative comment will stick out. The same is true for the Pit Bull breed. Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes should be allowed to be kept in non–abusive homes as pets. Pit Bulls in today's world have a reputation of being dangerous fighting dogs. Noting this, many courts have made appeals to raise the fee for owning one or a cross–breed. In Ireland, a dog deemed as a Pit Bull was put down, though it never inflicted harm on any person or dog. It was executed simply because it was a Pit Bull. Imagine your best friend being ripped away from you and slaughtered simply because of the way they look. With people, we call this a horrible act of genocide, but is it different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The same people believe that they are naturally aggressive and therefore unsafe. Pit Bulls have been known to "snap" and go on killing sprees, or "lock their jaws" when they bite. The truth is that Pit Bulls are only dangerous if they are trained to be that way. If an owner trains a dog to fight other dogs, it should be the owner who is punished. Why would a gun be convicted of a murder? As for the issue of Pit Bulls locking their jaws, this is nothing more than a fabricated myth. Pit Bulls' jaws aren't even as powerful as other breeds' such as the Mastiff. However, jaw strength is of no importance if the Pit Bull is not trained to fight. Lastly, the issue of Pit Bulls "snapping", well, this is the case of all breeds who were originally bred to be fighters, like the Akita Inu, the Kerry Blue Terrier, and yes– the Shar ... • 12. Banning Pit Bulls Research Paper Have you ever been told that you can't own your dog because of its breed? Most people haven't simple because most people don't own a Pit Bull. Pit Bulls have been made illegal to own in some cities just because of their breed. They are view as "Dangerous" or "Bad" just because of some people who raised theirs wrong. People used to use them in dog fighting and people today shouldn't have to get rid of their loved family pet because other people don't like the idea of a Pit being in their town. Pit Bulls shouldn't be illegal to own in any city or state. They can be and are great dogs as long as they are raised right. In some cities, pit bulls are illegal to own, and this isn't fair because Pit Bulls are a good breed of dog, as long as they are treated okay. For example, lets say you own a Husky; you won't be told by the city that you can't own that dog, but lets say you own a pit bull. It becomes the other way around. Depending on the city, you won't be allowed to have your dog. Lets say someone raises a Dalmatian. If they abuse it, or make it fight, that dog will be vicious to anyone just like any other breed of dog would. If you raise the Dalmatian right, and don't abuse it or make it fight, you will end up with a very loving and very friendly dog. It's the same way for Pit bulls. • 15. Pit Bull Liability Research Pit bulls are a breed of dog that are notoriously labeled as being dangerous and as having a propensity to attack without warning. Statistics gathered from 2005 through 2015 found that Pit bulls accounted for 64.4 percent, or 232, of the 360 deaths of Americans suffered due to dog bite injuries, while only making up about 6.6 percent of the total U.S. dog population. Due to these statistics, there are many who defend enacting statutes that specifically point to incidents involving these dogs needing strict liability to protect third parties. The Maryland Court of Appeals, for example, held in Tracey v. Solesky (2012) that owners and landlords are liable for injuries caused by pit bulls and cross–bred pit bull mixes, describing them as "inherently dangerous." The judgment of this court ruling meant that it was no longer necessary to prove that a pit bull who attacks a person or that pit bulls in general are dangerous; all pit bull owners are automatically held to a strict liability standard under Maryland law. This case established a new standard of liability for a specific breed of dog due to what some would argue is their aggressive and vicious nature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A Pit Bull Is The Best Nanny Any Child A Pit Bull is the best nanny any child can have" are words that Mayor Denis Coderre could not bear to hear after introducing a bylaw regarding breed specific legislation, commonly shortened to BSL, on September 27 2016. The bylaw comes on the heels of an incident that has taken place in June, where a woman in her fifties was mauled to death by what the city believes to be Pit Bull–it is important to note that a DNA test has yet to confirm this, however–and in response, the mayor opted not to condemn the owner of the dog but rather an entire breed. While the decision has been made in an effort to reinforce public safety, Mayor Coderre has chosen to not get to the root of the biting problem, instead he simply covered up a bigger problem by not holding owners accountable, therefore setting the new bylaw up for failure. The overall bias regarding the correlation between dog bites and breeds, the underlying causes which prompt a dog to bite, a veterinarian's right of not putting a dog down solely based on appearances and the SPCA's threat to end all their canine services as well as their intent to sue the city are more than enough evidence to suggest that a different route ought to be taken in order to lower dog–bite statistics. A dangerous dog is one who inflicts serious injury, or poses an imminent threat of serious aggression toward people or other animals. We do not pay attention to other breeds when we think of dangerous dogs. We pay attention to the ones that look the most threatening, like Pit Bulls. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One reason a dog may become aggressive is their living arrangements. Living indoors compared to living outdoors affects their behavior greatly because a dog who lives indoors tends to have more positive socialization than a dog who lives outdoors (The Star). The most aggressive dog can be a dog who transitions from living indoors and outdoors. Another reason a dog can become aggressive is the amount of positive socialization the dog gets (The Star). Their living arrangements affects this as well, but so does the type of socialization a person gives to the dog. A dog that has negative or very little socialization may not know what to do in a positive social situation and may become aggressive towards the people in the situation. A dog that has lots of positive socialization tends to have more people skills and is likely to be more friendly to new people and other animals (The Star). Attitude is another cause of animal aggression. When people give positive attitudes towards animals, the animals tend to give a positive attitude or behavior back. When someone has a negative attitude towards an animal or to something they are protective of, like a mom's puppies, they tend to protect themselves or others by being aggressive (The Star). Also, when a dog feels he or she is in danger, they will tend to take an aggressive action to protect themselves. This is not very shocking because that is how their breeds are, but what is surprising is that Mona is calm while Leo is more playful. This may seem like a contradiction but it is not. A dog can be inactive while remaining playful. Anotherdifference that Mona and Leo have in their temperaments is that Mona is more friendly with dogs, while Leo is more human friendly. And unless you have owned both a pitbull and a pug these differences in their personalities are surprising, but to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Pit Bull Research Paper 2015 Pit bulls American Staffordshire Terriers (Am Staffs) and American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs) are the most commonly known dogs for their assumed vicious personality. Am Staffs/APBT's are also more likely to be referred to as pit bulls when being discussed. Pit bull is a name that was created to address the more general breeds of dogs that have similar looks and characteristics. The people who already have a strong dislike for pit bulls will automatically imagine a vicious, volatile, and unfriendly animal. The popular thought for pit bulls is that they were born killers and should not be considered a dog for someone's home life. However, a number of studies have proven those assumptions false. In fact, pit bulls can be just as people–friendly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Undoubtedly, pit bulls can be trained like a vicious attacker, but so can any other dog who is agile and raised to. Violence may have been there since the beginning, but that does not mean pit bulls cannot be loving creatures. Even though the origin of pit bulls came from dog fighting, it does not completely stop the chances of the animal being friendly in any way. While it is agreed that they can be dangerous when aggressive, it does not mean pit bulls are a lost cause. The real issue is the simple fact that all pit bulls should not be lumped into a category of vicious. While it may be true that they are already genetically made to be a "fight" dog, it does not mean that is all they can amount to. History shows pit bulls were bred to be more agile and have a more friendly personality compared to when they first began as only fighting for entertainment. Pit bulls can be as caring as they can be aggressive, it all depends on the way they were brought up and how they were taught to handle situations. Like any other species, pit bulls require the right person and patience to help them learn the right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Misconceptions Of Pit Bulls And Pitbulls The Bullied Bullies When people think of loyal dogs with a friendly demeanor, puppy–like face, and a wagging tail, they typically would imagine a Golden Retriever or a Labrador Retriever. However, out of these people, many of them would not expect a Pit Bull to fit into the same categories. Pit bulls are the most bred dogs in America, and yet, "one million Pit Bulls are euthanized every year," and "only one in 600 Pit Bulls born will ever find a loving home" ("Pit Bulls and Euthanasia Rates"). This is a result of misconceptions about Pit Bulls that millions of people today still believe. A widely believed misconception about the term "Pit Bull" is that it is an actual dog breed. However, this is false, and it is simply a category for different dog breeds with similar characteristics, such as the American Staffordshire, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Bull Terrier, theStaffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Bulldog, and any mixes between these breeds. These breeds all came from the breeding of English Terriers and English Bulldogs to obtain desired sizes and characteristics. Most Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes are "strong, powerful dogs with broad, brick–like heads and muscular bodies" ("About Dog Breeds: Pit Bull") and have a large variety of different fur colors. Because of their strength and loyalty, Pit Bulls have been taken advantage of by people who use them for fighting and money; when dog fighting rings are broken up, usually word spreads and causes many people ... Most pit bulls are threats to their neighborhoods. Most policemen are corrupted. Some are. Few are. A problem in our world today involves the labels and generalizations that are used to describe, often negatively, a large population of people or species. Some of the more common ones that are present today include the idea that Muslims are terrorists, Syrian refugees are dangerous and are looking to cause trouble here in the United States, and so on and so forth. Gladwell concludes that pit bulls often find themselves in tragic situations, where the preconceived notions they are born with lead to their mistreatment and abuse. Gladwell also touches on the idea of stable and unstable generalizations that not only involve dogs, but also other groups of humans as well. For a while, generalizations that D.E.A. agents made in attempting to identify and catch potential terrorists and drug smugglers in airports were so flawed and based on unstable assumptions (such as targeting all Arab and Pakistani passengers, as if they were the only potential terrorists solely based on their ethnicity) that the D.E.A. almost always profiled the wrong person, and missed out on capturing the true criminals. When "the act of generalizing... changes the basis of the generalization," it is necessary for those patrolling to both adapt to these changes and to get rid of the generalizations they had been making in the first place, in order to clean up their acts (Gladwell). Many of the sentiments that Gladwell speaks about has been echoed recently in the news about the snap judgments that people make about other groups of people, based on generalizations that have been made about them. The racial divisiveness of our country has been a topic of thought recently, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Attention Getter: Dr. Martin Luther King once said, "I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" (King, 1963). As members of the millennial generation, we are taught that it is unacceptable to judge people by the way one looks, dresses, or talks. So why is it excusable for you to judge my four–legged companion based on the way she looks, the way she is built, or the way her bark sounds? B. It was in the 1980s when the perception of the pit bull was smeared. 1. Regardless of being illegal in all fifty states, dog fighting made a comeback and the pit bull was the dog of choice. 2. They were also the preferred "guard dog" for big time drug dealers and gangs. C. But why does this irresponsibility fall on the breed? Humans have bestowed this demeanor upon them, yet the dogs are the ones receiving the repercussions. 1. The pit bull is well known for its loyalty and desire to please. They continually strive to exceed expectations that are set for them, which is one of the biggest reasons they are preferred as a fighting dog; they will not give up. They will fight for the attention and praise of their owner. 2. Pit bulls are loving, tender, faithful, and they are protective over the families they belong to. We, as owners and pet lovers, need to take the steps to ensure the image of this breed is restored; We need to speak up for the underdog. Transition: Contrary to popular belief, the pit bull is not born with the mentality that fighting is the spice of life. MAIN IDEA #2: One of the biggest preconceived notions about the pit bull is that they are the most dangerous dogs in the world that run around wild–eyed and blood thirsty. They have been improperly labeled as vicious creatures that are incapable of love and

The Death Of Pit Bulls TITLE Gabriela Andrade Mrs. Taylor English 12 18 November 2015 Gabriela Andrade Mrs. Taylor English 12 18 November 2015 TITLE INTRODUCTION "In the late 2014, Animals 24–7, a group that tracks shelter killings, estimated that of the 1.3 million shelter dogs projected for euthanasia in 2014, pit bulls accounted for 56%. This is true despite the fact that pit bulls only make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population" (dogsbite.org). If someone were to walk into an animal shelter and see several pit bulls and walk in again a month later about half of them would be gone to lethal injection. Because people are scared of them, they are not properly cared for and eventually become to much to handle and thrown into a shelter. If a mother was to not care for her child, that child would eventually spaz out and do whatever it wants, which in most cases is what happens to pit bulls. Although there is a huge stereotype about pit bulls, they can actually be very well behaved and friendly if they are trained and cared for just like any other dog. HISTORY of PIT VS PIT / PITBULL OWNERS Today 's pitbull is a descendant of the English bull baiting dog that was selectively bred to bite and hold large animals by their face and head. In the 1800's, bull baiting was outlawed, so their owners turned to fighting their pit bulls against each other instead. While public opinion varies widely on the stigma of certain breeds of animals such as Pit Bulls, these animals are falsely criticized because they often provide protection to their owners, they are often great inclusions in a family dynamic, and their behavior is often a problem of nurture rather than nature. It is often found that if Pit Bulls are put into bad situations, then that may be reflected on how a dog reacts to its environment. Pit Bulls were original a cross breed between Bulldog and Terrier. This combination made a dog that was agile and strong. Due to Pit Bulls having these favored characteristics, these dogs were often used as hunting dogs, as well as for illegal dog fighting. Because of this, people believe that the nature of these dogs is to be aggressive and bite (Liz 18). The statistics show pit bulls as dogs that may be dangerous but often they don't show different factors that may affect the dog's behaviors ("Dog bite prevention" 1733). Many things may lead to a higher chance of aggression, like whether the dog has been spayed or neutered, if it was abused, if it lived in bad living conditions, if its sole purpose was to fight, etc ("Position Statement"). The ASPCA argues, "In Prince George's County, Maryland, where Pit Bull Terriers are banned, the Animal Management Division reports that 80 percent of the approximately 500 to 600 animals seized and killed by animal control every year under the ban are "nice, family dogs"'(qtd. In "Position Statement " ). It's mostly out of fear that Pit Bulls are taken away because people think there is a high chance Pit Bulls may bite. People are afraid of them because of the stories they have heard or seen and they tend to flinch when they hear the words 'pit bull'. Pit Bulls are discriminated against because of what they are and how people portray them to be. Because of this, Pit Bulls are paying the price for something they have no fault in. Pit Bull is not actually a breed. "The legal definition of a pit bull is a class of dogs that includes the following breeds: American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American bulldog and any other pure bred or mixed breed dog that is a combination of these dogs (DogsBite, Pit bull FAQ)." Their history has brought turmoil and hate against them. Society has not helped with this either. They take what everyone else says about Pit Bulls and adds it to what they hear in the media. Their result is them being fearful of Pit Bulls and not wanting to have anything to do with them. They take these stories from the media about a Pit Bull attack and assume all Pit Bulls are vicious and will attack people. This is how the stereotypes come about. However, some people work to change the perception of Pit Bulls, like the owners of Johnny and Leo. They go and reach out to people, from elders to children, who get to know the dog as an individual and not as society has perceived them to be. Each dog, no matter a Pit Bull or not, is his own. Each one has his own personality, likes and dislikes, and temperament. Each dog is different and has his own individuality. Society should look upon dogs, especially Pit Bulls, as an individual and not as a whole. Looking at breeds as a whole is where discrimination and stereotypes come into play and can ruin a dog's ... I can't even smash one by stepping on it. They are so strong that you can hang a rope from a tree and they will lock their jaws on the rope and swing from it. They can also jump very high.
