3. Prevalence of Dental Diseases in the Philippines
•Dental Caries – 87.4%
•Periodontal disease – 48.3%

4. National Monitoring and Evaluation Dental Survey
(NMEDS)
• Supposedly done every 5 years to determine prevalence
rates of dental diseases
• Previously done only in 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1998 and
2011
• 2011 survey had budget of P5M

7. DOH Dental Accomplishment reporting
- Dental charts generally are paper based
- DOH Oral Health Report Form 2 of the Field Health Service Information
System (FHSIS) is required to be submitted electronically
- Reports are Monthly, Quarterly, and Annual
- Reports when done accurately and submitted and analyzed should
have results disseminated and used as database for prevalence of
diseases in place of NMEDS
RAROSANESHI2012017
9. Private dental clinics and the
Philippine Dental Association
• Dental charts generally paper based
• Dental clinics are not required to submit any reports
to any agency
• No data on prevalence rates of diseases from their
patients
RAROSANESHI2012017
10. Association of Factors Affecting the Use of Records
Management Systems of Dental Clinics in the Makati Central
Business District
• Most strongly associated factors with Electronic Dental
Record use were the available resources/technologies in the
clinic and perceived ease of use (PEOU)
- Catalan et al., 2017
RAROSANESHI2012017
11. Philippine Association of Dental Colleges
• Paper-based patient dental charts
• Are dental students taught how to use electronic dental
records?
RAROSANESHI2012017
13. Use of EDRs in Dental Schools
• Dental schools should adopt EDRs for school patient records
• Paper-based patient charts get lost between student dental clinicians
• Data privacy issues with paper-based charts
• EDRs help monitor patient’s dental needs and match them with student’s
clinic requirement needs which would help solve student graduation
attrition attributed to “lack of patients”
• Dental students get exposed to EDRs while in training which they can adopt
in their future dental practices

17. Dental school patient records
Number of school dental clinic days per semester - 105 days
One new patient chart per day - 105
Dental clinicians – 1,500
157,500 patient charts per semester x 2 semesters
315,000 patient charts a year
RAROSANESHI2012017
18. National eHealth Systems and Services
• DOH eHealth and eHealth framework could require dental schools to
use EHRs
• DOH could provide supplemental funding for implementation of EHRs
in dental schools
• DOH should monitor and evaluate EHR use in dental schools
RAROSANESHI2012017
19. Pitch
There is approximately 315,000 patient records that are
generated from Philippine dental schools in one school year. If
dental schools use Electronic Health Records, disease
prevalence of these patients can be monitored and their
dental needs matched to the curricular requirements of dental
students minimizing the patient-related factors of attrition in
dental schools and providing appropriate service to patients.
Use of EHRs by dental students train them to such
technology which they can use in their future dental practice
thus increasing use of EHRs in dental settings.
