approach as I coach students in Pre-ETS

8. What Is A Resume?
● One-page summary of who you are, your skills, and your work experiences
○ It’s a SUMMARY -- don’t list everything!
● Something you give to an employer
○ Two Ways:
■ 1. As part of applying for a job
■ 2. During a job interview

● Goal → convince an employer that they should interview you for a job

● A Hiring Manager will look at
your resume between
6 seconds and 60 seconds
● They will scan your resume, not
read it

○ Clear
○ Organized
○ Error-free
○ Truthful (DON’T LIE!)
● It should match the job you’re
applying for
○ Skills
○ Training
○ Experiences

18. Job References
● Also called “Professional References”
● Usually on a separate page after the resume
● Goal → Include people who can speak well about you to a future employer
○ Say what you do well AND where you can improve
20. Job References
● Follow the formatting of your resume -- make it consistent
○ Suggestion: Have your contact information at the top of your Reference Page
○ Suggestion: Try to have at least three professional references
● For each reference, include:
○ Name
○ Their Relationship To You (Former boss, Co-worker, Teacher, etc.)
○ Phone Number
○ Email address

● Make sure the information you include is truthful
● Interested employers WILL call/email to check your references

● The work you do right now to write a great resume, references, and cover
letter will help you in future job searches
● Formatting matters, spelling matters
○ You’re sending a message about who you are as an employee...even before someone talks
to you
