1. Part I: The American Dream
--------------------------
Prologue - The Murder
[Police Radio]
Dispatcher: Stand by, 10-10, investigate a reported disturbance at
Aesir Plaza.
Cop #1: 10-4 dispatcher, verify address...
Dispatcher: That's Aesir Plaza, repeat, Aesir Plaza.
NEW YORK CITY. PRESENT DAY. TWO HOURS AGO.
Cop #2: Shots fired on the rooftop. An assault in progress at Aesir
Plaza. Repeat, an assault in progress.
Cop #3: It's a warzone down here. 10-85 dispatcher, need additional
units, additional units now! Officer in danger, officer in danger.
Dispatcher: 10-5, please repeat. 10-5, all units, all units,
emergency, officer in danger, Aesir Plaza, repeat, Aesir plaza, all
units... [Fades Out]
Max Payne: They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation
mark to everything that had led to this point. I released my finger
from the trigger, and then it was over. To make any kind of sense of
it, I need to go back three years. Back to the night the pain
started. I was still in the force back then. NYPD, Manhattan,
Midtown North Precinct. Hell's kitchen.
Alex: So, when are you coming to work for me, Detective Payne?
Max: You'd make me work undercover in some hellhole. Sorry Alex,
Michelle and the baby come first. See? My last smoke. It's bad for
the baby.
Alex: That's you, Max, a regular boy scout.
Max: See you, Alex.
Alex: Still on for Poker thursday, right?
Max: Like taking candy from a baby.
Max Payne: Life was good. The sun setting on a sweet summer's day,
the smell of freshly mowed lawns, the sounds of children playing...
A house across the river, on the Jersey-side. A beautiful wife and a
baby girl. The American dream come true.
Max: Honey, I'm home!
Max Payne: But dreams have a nasty habit of going bad when you're
not looking. The sun went down with practiced bravado, twilight
crawled across the sky, laden with foreboding.
2. NEW JERSEY. THREE YEARS AGO.
Max: Michelle, honey, anybody home?
Max Payne: I didn't like the way the show started. But they had
given me the best seat in the house. Front row center.
[When you approach the graffiti on the wall]
Max: What the hell?!
[Press Action]
Max Payne: Something ugly had been tattooed on the wall, a map of
things to come. It was a poison syringe, a magic tag full of
diabolical meanings.
[The phone rings]
[Press Action]
Max: Listen! Someone's broken into my house, call 911.
The Other Voice: Is this the Payne residence?
Max: Yes, someone's broken into my house, they're still here, you
have to-
The Other Voice: Good. I am afraid I cannot help you.
Max: Who is this?
[The other person hangs up]
KLIK!
Max: Hello?
[When you walk up the stairs something upstairs falls over]
[You hear arguing and a baby crying]
Max: Michelle!
[3 gun shots go off]
Michelle: No! No! No, Max!
[When you try to open the bathroom door]
Michelle: Auhh!
Max: Michelle!
Michelle: Please!...
[3 more gun shots go off]
Punk: I'm gonna hurt you! I'm gonna hurt ya! It's coming. Death is
coming. You're gonna die!
[Guy comes through door]
3. Max: Freeze! NYPD!
[Max sees the baby cradle knocked over and blood everywhere]
Max: No! No, no, please God, no....
Next Punk: The flesh of fallen angels!
[Max sees Michelle dead]
Max: No, no, no God, no. Please, Michelle, oh baby...
Noooooooooo!!!
Max Payne: That was three years ago. Everything ripped apart in a
New York minute. The killer junkies had been high on a previously
unknown designer drug. Valkyr. V. After the funeral, I told Alex I
would be transferring to the DEA. It took us three long years to get
a break in the Valkyr case. Then, finally, two months ago, a dime-
dropper tipped us off that Jack Lupino, a mob boss in the
Punchinello crime family, was trafficking. I went undercover,
infiltrated the worst Mafia family in New York.
Chapter One: Roscoe Street Station
Max Payne: I came in from the cold and the dark. Outside, the city
was a cruel monster. I'd been slowly working my way from small-time
to the big fish, trying to get to the source of the drug. Alex and
B.B. were my only contacts in the DEA... The only ones in this
decrepit city who knew I was down here.
[B.B. calls Max on the phone]
B.B.: B.B. here... Something urgent has come up with Jack Lupino.
You need to meet with Alex, immediatley... at the Roscoe Street
Station.
Max Payne: I hadn't had a face to face with Alex since I'd gone
undercover. Outside, the mercury was falling fast. It was colder
than the Devil's heart, raining ice pitchforks as if the Heavens
were ready to fall. Everyone was running for shelter like there was
no tomorrow. It didn't get any better when I got to the subway. The
feeling hit me like a point-blank shot straight in the face...
Something was not right about this. My Beretta stirred nervously
under my coat... but the train doors had already shut behind me, and
I was in for the ride... Next stop: Roscoe Street Station, and Alex.
Max Payne: The Station was drenched in gloom. Alex was a ghost
nowhere to be seen. I'd have to look for him.
[When you find the dead Transit Cop]
Max Payne: Death was in the air at Roscoe Street. I would have to
find Alex fast.
4. [When you find the Painkillers]
Max Payne: The pills would hold the pain back for a while.
OR
Max Payne: The pills would ease the pain.
Thug 1: [Sighs] Wasn't Jake supossed to take care of this?
Thug 2: He an' Mickey are havin' too much fun takin' care of the cop
up there.
Thug 1: W-w-what's the plan?
Thug 2: Simple, gun down every mother-loving bastard that gets off
the train.
Thug 1: Sweet... Didn't the train go already?
Thug 2: No idea, let's just wait and see.
[5 shots go off]
Thug 1: Yeah, he's dead alright.
Thug 2: Hey, that's me your talkin' to.
Thug: Yo, guys... Yo, guys... Hey! Quit kidding around, you hear me?
What is this, a joke? Hey! Anybody!... Answer me!...
[When you try the security panel]
Max Payne: The security panel let out a mocking kackel. I would need
the right code.
Thug 1: Who was that?
Thug 2: It's nothin', relax.
OR
Thug 1: You're askin' for it.
Thug 2: Take it easy.
OR
Thug 1: That's bad, that's bad.
Thug 2: Ya think?
Thug 1: Yeah.
Max Payne: For Alex, I had ended up in the middle of a big-time
crime operation.
Thug: Kiss it goodbye!
Transit Cop: No, don't!
Thug: Go to Hell!
5. [When you kill the Thug]
Transit Cop: You saved me, man!
Max: What's going on here?
Transit Cop: A massacre... These armed thugs just appeared out of
nowhere, we need to get help. I can make the call from the control
room, one floor up. Can you take me there?
Max: Sure... Sounds good, follow me.
[If you don't go fast]
Transit Cop: Frankly, I'm too scared to go to the Control Room alone
without you and your gun.
OR
We gotta get moving, please!
OR
We need to go and call help.
[When you try to open the train door]
Max Payne: The power to the rail had been cut. I would have to get
the power back on to get the train moving.
[The Transit Cop enters the code and the door opens]
Transit Cop: Home free, this way...
[Two Thugs are inside the room and turn to the opening door]
Thug: Yo! Lookout! [He blasts the Transit Cop and the door shuts]
Transit Cop: Ahhhhh!! [He dies]
[When you turn the power back on and press action on the security
monitor]
Max Payne: The train lit up like a Christmas tree, the power was
back on.
[When the train crashes through a blockade]
Max Payne: So much for being subtle.
