1. ERIC THE VIKINGIn what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Our product uses conventions such as slow-motion e.g. When Rohan and Jake are having a sword fight. We did this to make it suit the music was played in the background. Real media products sometimes use this technique. We also included a number of different songs in our media to match the mood of a particular scene. We also used the micro-elements that were required for our filming e.g. mise-en-scene, sound and editing.
2. How does your media product represent particular social groups? The social group that might find our product the most interesting would be children and families. I believe they would find the light-hearted comedy reasonably funny and it can also teach children that bullying is not right or acceptable in society. Our media product represents some young boys in society as bullies. In our product we have two characters that bully a young child constantly because he has an imaginary friend. They call him names and push him around a little. Our product also suggests that young children have a wild sense of imagination. For instance Eric having an imaginary friend.
3. Finally the character Eric, is represented as a stereotypical young child who behaves child-like and with a young sounding voice. Furthermore the bullies in our product are represented as stereotypical teenagers who bully younger children who are not necessarily “cool” or popular.
4. What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why? The kind of institution that might distribute our product could be an institution such as Disney, MGM, DreamWorks, Paramount. All of these institutions would be a good distributor for our media product. Examples of films that such companies have made could be Toy Story, Shrek, Up etc.
5. Who would be the audience for your product? The type of audience our product is aimed at is young kids and families. Although the story is slightly less childlike than many other children films, it is still very much a fantasy type of genre. The story is also not completely serious and it contains some light-hearted comedy. For instance the choice of music is quite funny. Our product also contains a fair bit of action, so some young teenagers may find this quite interesting.
6. How did you attract/address your audience? We attracted the audience right from the start by making the beginning include up tempo/high octane music. The drama also contains a lot of action from the start e.g. sword fights. Our product attracts our target audience by doing a number of things. Firstly it is relatively child-like so children can relate to it easily without any complications that they might have trying to understand a more complex adult film. However the parents of children may also find it interesting with some of the humour and the fact that it isn’t an animation film, which some adults may find silly or embarrassing to watch.
7. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Our group learnt more about a number of different technologies to do with our media. Firstly we learnt about using the video camera effectively. Secondly we learnt about a number of the apple Macs programmes e.g. Garage band and final cut. On final cut we learnt more about cutting and editing out certain clips, as well as inserting music and placing it in to fit with our filming.
8. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you think you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Our group have learnt a lot from our preliminary task. Firstly our camerawork has been a lot neater and better in our childrens film. Our editing was better because there was more sound and music included in our product. Also our film editing was neater because we cut out and edited certain clips to make the final product improved.
