Lack of intervention for mental health of Maharashtra prison inmates matter of concern
● AT LEAST four inmates have died by suicide in Maharashtra prisons since May 20
● 32-year-old convict died by suicide in Nashik jail. The note alleged harassment by five prison
officials

18. Death Rates | Health
● The mortality rate in Indian prisons has shown a steady rise in the past two
decades. In 2018, the figure crossed the 1,800 mark for the first time.
● NCRB released prisons statistics for 2018. Of the total deaths, the data says as
many as 1,639 persons died of “natural causes”, while 149 were categorised as
“unnatural deaths”. Another 57 deaths were for “unknown reasons”, as some
states have not furnished the required information.
● Since 2000, when the NCRB published prison deaths data, a shocking 26,426
incarcerated persons lost their lives in judicial custody. Since over 70% of the
total prison population are usually undertrials, most of these deaths could be of
those awaiting justice.
